The Way Through features a col lect ion of 15 new works in encaust ic and mixed media that con -ceptual ly are dr iven by the art ist ’s des ire to put recent loss into a greater understanding. By incorporat ing an abundance of nature in each paint ing , Gehl puts her personal gr ief into a new perspect ive. Despite the void, and as i f to sat isfy i ts emptiness , each of the new works is f i l led with seeds, t rees, and f lowers and suggests l i fe i s a force that moves forward despite great tragedy. Gehl ’s organic composit ions are rendered with a h ighly textured surface a l lowing for many layers of the encaust ic wax to saturate a quiet , yet powerful palette. She is known for her unique use of mater ia ls and her invent ive and spontaneous paint ing techniques that breathe

l i fe into her work, and make the journey a personal one.

Joyce Gehl holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Santa Barbara and the Art Center Col lege of Des ign in Pasadena. Her work has been exhibited in ga l ler ies in the Paci f ic Northwest , Santa Fe, Aspen, Vai l , Boston and At lanta and is inc luded in corporate and pr ivate col lect ions across

ARTIST STATEMENT

As I age, I lose sight of that which is directly in front of me. And when I lost someone I loved, things both near and far lost clarity.

I learn from nature. Mixing fragments of images from the natural world and gestural expressions of life, I create dream-like landscapes that lead me to another place.

A breeze unbinds seeds, flowers and leaves from their foun-dation. Horizons are obscured by an explosion of life. Dis-tance is blurred. Destinations unfocused.

In art and in life, a void is filled with abundance. A path opens to a suggestion of what lies beyond.
