Thanks to your generous support and partnerships, 2014 was a wonderful year and a lot was

celebrated at Camp Joy. We often share Camp Joy’s impact through testimonials and heartfelt

stories from the participants, but this time we wanted to take a new approach and revisit 2014

through numbers!

Thank You

Thank you to our generous donors who made it possible for more children to participate in

positive outdoor learning and camp experiences. Here are some highlights of the events,

projects, and programs supported by Camp Joy’s wonderful donors in 2014.

On April 25, 2014 at

Xavier’s Cintas Center, a

sold out Dance for Joy

raised more than

$300,000 to support

Camp Joy’s programs

for at-risk youth.

The Area Progress Council of Warren

County, the Warren County Astronomical

Society, generous donors and Camp Joy

celebrated the dedication of the

Rachel A. Hutzel Observatory on

October 3, 2014.

The new Yurt Cabin Village was

used for the first time during

summer 2014 thanks to the

generous 75th Anniversary

Capital Campaign donors who

made this dream possible.

The National Recreation

Foundation made a significant

contribution to expand

programming for at-risk youth

that includes delivering more

follow-up weekends to reinforce

the positive lessons learned at

summer camp.

The “lights are on” thanks to Interact for Health who

provided a grant to expand the capacity and accessibility

of Camp Joy’s water activities. Campers can now enjoy

swimming in the evening which is especially great for

campers with health conditions sensitive to the summer

heat.

More students from

economically disadvantaged

backgrounds were able to

participate in the Outdoor

School Program in 2014

thanks to a vital donation

from Macy’s. In addition, the

Hatton Foundation

provided a generous grant to

make trails more accessible

for children with limited

mobility.

Cincinnati Children’s

Hospital and Camp Joy

commemorated 15 years

of collaboration at a

luncheon on May 16,

2014. Polly Partin-Welch

was recognized for her

dedication and

leadership. She received

the first annual Camp

Champ award.

Lessons Learned Being Paid Forward

More than 4,000 underserved youth benefitted from a Camp Joy experience last year. Many

of the children who participate in Camp Joy’s programs are from foster homes. Camp Joy

provides a dedicated week of summer camp for youth in foster care and also runs the

“Fostering Success Program” – a year-round program that brings youth in foster care to

Joy for one weekend a month to work on life skills.

The positive impact that Joy has on these foster youth is nothing short of amazing. Nadia is

a perfect example.

Lives Changed Through Camp Joy

By the time I was 13 years old, I had been in over seven foster homes, separated from both

sisters, and forced to fight for my life. Then I found Camp Joy and the Fostering Success

Program. The program helped me as a camper and also as a counselor. I have always

wanted to help people, and make a positive difference for other kids just like I was helped

during the toughest times. This past summer, one night we were trying to do something fun

and one of my little girls seemed really scared, so I had to talk her through it. At the end of

the night before going to bed, she came up and hugged me and told me she loved me. It

was probably one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. Camp Joy has shined

a light on my life. It has given me a place where I know lives are being changed, where I can

trust that kids like me are being taken care of, and where I can go when I need someone to

lean on. Camp Joy has changed my future, given me hope, and has given me a home I will

never lose.

Outdoor Education –

A Unique Education and Experience for School Children

Each year, Camp Joy partners with more than 60 schools from across the region to ensure

more than 5,000 students have the opportunity to step outside traditional school walls for a

unique and exciting learning experience.

About 1,000 of these children are from

economically challenged backgrounds.

One child who went through Joy’s Outdoor

Education program said,

“At Camp Joy, I learned that I was brave and I

was able to overcome my fears. Also, I

learned about nature and they help us and we

help them. If we hurt the plants and trees, we

won’t be able to live. The last thing we learned

there was to work together and help each

other.”

Jackie Chandler, a teacher at St.

Boniface School (serving

primarily low-income students),

shared the importance of Camp

Joy for the students.

“These children were given a

memorable experience at Camp

Joy that will last a lifetime.

Through this experience they

learned a lot of new information.

The students, in turn, will develop

the skills necessary to become

independent, life-long learners.

Thank you very much for allowing

my students to experience this

gift that will last them a lifetime!”

Building Great Leaders and Making Great Leaders Better

The Leadership & Development Program has been going strong for nearly three decades.

Camp Joy partners with more than 75 organizations each year, and trains more than 2,000

business professionals. Camp Joy has had a strong partnership with the Cincinnati USA

Regional Chamber’s leadership programs including a 27-year relationship with Leadership

Cincinnati and a ten-year relationship with C-Change. Camp Joy helped the Chamber

kick-off their newest programs Cincy Next and Leadership Action in 2014.

Jessica Baron, Senior Director of Programs with the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber

says, “The Camp Joy experience is a key component of several of our leadership programs.

The Joy staff is attuned to the needs of each program and they differentiate the experience

for our participants. The camp is well maintained and great to experience in any season.

And, we get good reviews on the food as well!”

Revenue from the Leadership & Development programs helps fund the cost of Camp Joy’s

youth programs. This is just another way that Joy’s programs come full circle with leaders

giving back to future generations as they develop their skills to further help the community.
