HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE OF CAREER PLANNING
The ide of career can be traced backin the beginning in 20th century. It’setymology comes from the Frenchword “carrier” which means a road ora race course, which in turn comesfrom the Latin word “car aria” whichrefers to track for wheeled vehicles.

1990’s During the early1990s, educationnursing andsecretarial courseswere associated withwomen. When menenrolled in thiscourses during thisperiod, their sexualorientation was a bitin qestion.

DEFINATIONS
Career- Time devoted for working out of apurposeful life pattern through the workundertaken by an individual.
Work- The activity that produces something ofvalue for oneself or others. It is not limited toactivities for which we are paid.
Vocation- The work that an individual doesbecome of calling.
Profession- A career that requires specializedtraining and academic preparation.
Occupation-A group of similar positions found indifferent industries or organization.
Job- A paid position held by one or moreindividuals requiring some related attributes in aspecific organization.
WHAT IS CAREER PLANNING?
Working as a teacher has many challenges inorder to address the needs of our students.The first that teachers must accept is thatthere is always room for improvement. Inorder to improve ourselves, we have tocarefully plan our career. Planning a careercan be defined as choosing life’s importantpaths. It is a lifelong process, which includeschoosing an occupation, getting a job, growingin our job, possibly changing careers, andeventually retiring.
THE CAREER PLANNING PROCESS IS
COMPRISED OF FOUR STEPS
1. Self
Gather information about yourself (selfassessment)
Interest, Values, Roles, Skills/Aptitude,Preferred Environments, DevelopmentalNeeds, Your realities
2. Options
• Explore the occupations in which you areinterested
• Get more specific information after younarrow down your options
3. Match During this phase of the process, you will: Identify possible occupations Choose both a short term and a long term
option
4. ActionYou will develop the steps you need to take inorder to reach your goal, for example:• Investigating sources of additional training
and education, if needed• Developing a job search strategy• Writing your resume• Preparing for a job interviews
