● Everything starts with the newspaper or “The Book”● Use the name of your paper or

● Choose your editors the first week of school but also hold elections in class/club for pres., VP, secretary and treasurer

● Making your class a “club” allows fundraising so equipment and supplies can be purchased

● It also helps the class “bond”

Branding cont.● Our treasurers are so good at fundraising that we buy a

new camera and other equipment including t-shirts for the whole class from funds raisedevery year

● Week One-Newspaper Basics & Interviewing● Every journalist needs to know three things

to write a good article:○ How to write a good lead○ How to write a good nut graf○ How to interview well-What’s the real story?

Everybody has a story, your job as a reporter is to FIND it.

○ Newspaper Scavenger Hunts (In packet)○ Interview and newspaper basics powerpoints (There

are a bunch of great journalism powerpoints on slideshare.net)

○ Here’s one: Journalism Interviewing Skills from Cubreporters.org

● Week Two-Photography● Photography is everything in journalism● Every article should have a

photo and/or infographic

● Here is the assignment powerpoint: 100 Photos, Choose top 3

● Have each student present their top three choices explaining techniques they used

● Week Three-AP Style○ Give them the AP Style cheat sheet (see packet).

Make sure they use this EVERY TIME they write a new article.

○ Scout for a few good copy editors for the year.● Here’s the powerpoint to review and test

their knowledge, use whiteboards and dry erase markers for this one: AP Style Powerpoint

● Week Four-Broadcasting 101● I bow down to the expert here which is Don

Goble. He’s on slideshare.net with multiple powerpoints.

● The assignment: Groups of three to four, make a video with a theme. Video checklist worksheet included in your packet.

● Additional activities provided in your packet to keep students focused and on task between newspaper and yearbook assignments.

● New York Times in Education gives you online subscriptions for the year and emails you the daily paper

● OC Register is also online subscriptions only
