Journal Topic for Thursday, April 16th:
What do you know about process speeches? Have you ever given a process speech before? If so, what was it on? How did it go? If not, what do you think would be the easiest? The hardest?
Process/Demonstration Speecho Type of informative speech.o Teaches. . .o Provides answers to the question “How do you do
that?”o Also known as “how to” speech.
Process/Demonstration Speecho Above all else – demonstration speeches are
SPEECHES!o They have:
o An introductiono A bodyo A conclusiono They have transitionso And, they have supporting evidence.
o They should NOT have dead air time!
Process/Demonstration Speecho Make sure you choose a topic that is narrow or big enough that you
can actually demonstrate it in 5-8 minutes.o Can your topic be broken down into steps? If not, think again!o Prepare ahead of time non-essential steps.o No dead air time!o Modify the demonstration.o Have a completed sample.o Don’t talk to you visual aid.o Preprint & hand out later directions or recipe.
Process/Demonstration Speecho Include your audience.o Don’t use jargon or technical terms. Or, explain! ! !o No last minute volunteers – plan ahead!o Make sure it is a speech –
o Introductiono Body o Conclusiono Transitionso Supporting Evidence
o Practice, practice, practice!
Process/Demonstration Speecho Even though you are showing the audience how to do
something, you still need an enticing attention getter (an introduction) and a memorable close (conclusion).
Think first. . .o What are the required steps or stageso What comes first?o What’s absolutely essential?o Which step is easiest?o Which step is hardest?o What does the audience already know how to do?o Where will the audience be most likely to get confused?o Which step takes the most time?o Which take very little time?
Preparing your speech:
Then plan. . .o Organize steps in order.o Clarify and simplify difficult steps.o Think about the physical space of the room.o Don’t forget to put stage directions on your
index cards or outline.
Preparing your speech:
Think again. . .o Just because you are demonstrating something
you know how to do…doesn’t mean you can automatically explain it to an audience.
Don’t Assume You Know
Plan again. . .o What actual objects will you need.o What gaps will you need to fill in.o Practice working with your props.
Visual Aids/Props
Avoid potholes. . .o Abstract Topics: Challenge is to make it visual.o Concrete Topics: Challenge is to make it new
and different.
