1. Introduction
Welcome to the September Edition of ‘The PipeLine’. It is with deep sadness that we
report the death of Lesley Lister, wife of YDOA Member Terry Lister, who passed away on
Sunday the 10th of August, having been diagnosed with cancer some eighteen months
previously. Her illness made attending events progressively more difficult. Terry and Lesley
were both tremendously enthusiastic supporters of a wide range of musical events
throughout Yorkshire and beyond. Our thoughts go out to Terry and the family. Requiescat
in Pace.
All of the ‘Seven Pieces for Seven Decades’ compositions have now been completed and
work will soon commence, in conjunction with Banks Music Publications, on the album’s
formatting. Below are a few photographs of the compositions being collected. Please note

2. Previous Event
Our August meeting was Summer Outing - Howden Area
Nigel Holdsworth, President, writes:
On arrival at Howden Minster we were welcomed by Tony Parker who gave an interesting account of the
chequered history of the various organs at Howden Minster. This was followed by a thorough demonstration of the
instrument by the organist (Matthew Collins), who played the Adagio in E by Frank Bridge. The present three-
manual instrument by Rushworth and Draper was rebuilt by T Jackson of Leeds who retained the largely romantic
tonal scheme. It is a powerful instrument with a divided case and a detached console, the full-organ pleno fills the
church with a glorious, rich sound yet there are also delicate strings and a host of subtly contrasting flutes.
Although the piston action was giving some problems, we rose to the challenge and thoroughly enjoyed putting this
instrument through its paces.
The following pieces were performed:
Improvisation No. 4 Saint-Saëns
Sicilienne Fauré
Preludio 'Sine Nomine' from six pieces Howells
Improvisation sur le Te Deum Tournemire
Master Tallis' testament Howells
(The Great) Prelude and Fugue in C Bach
Adagio from Sonata in C minor Guilmant
Cantilena Pastorale Guilmant
Prelude in C Bach

Picnic lunches were consumed al fresco in the Market place where in lovely sunshine we welcomed people whom
we recognised from York and Eric Shepherd (organ builder) from London en route to Bridlington for the recital. The
bakery proved too much of a temptation for some of our number who after raiding the cash machine, sampled the
many different varieties of chocolate cake on offer.
Hunger satisfied, we travelled on to the village of Bubwith where in the ancient church a two-manual Brindley and
Foster was awaiting. While some changed into their organ shoes, there was a lively debate on the different
spellings of Foster as used by both F&A and B&F.
I am sure that we have all used a photocopy at some time, to assist with an awkward page turn. This tactic however
on this occasion proved to be somewhat troublesome...as on turning onwards, one was in actual fact, turning back!
This led to the start of one piece being followed by the conclusion of another quite different piece (although one of
a similar genre). Those listening seem to accept this 'stitch and paste' without immediate comment... which leads
me wonder if this could be the dawn of a whole new concept in performance practice!
The following pieces were performed:
Praise the Lord O my soul Karg-Elert
Folk Tune Whitlock
Prelude and Fughetta Franck
Echo Yon
Aria Rawsthorne
Trio Sonata VI Bach
Trumpet Voluntary Stubley
Minuetto and Impromptu Ireland
Voluntary in D minor Long
The final destination of the afternoon was St Helen's Escrick which has a two-manual Wood Wordsworth. The detail
on the case has similarities with the twin cases (by the same builder) at All Saints’ Pavement. St Helen's Escrick is a
Gothic Revival church and with the exception of the angel corbels in the oak roof almost totally rebuilt after a
disastrous fire in 1923. It has a spacious interior with the organ in the usual place, behind the north choir stalls.
The following pieces were performed:
Toccatina Jones
Elegy Thalben Ball
Epitaphe Vierne
Pièce Héroïque Franck
Orb and Sceptre Walton
Allegro Decisio Spark
Short Voluntary Worgan
A most enjoyable day; with three very different instruments all within a short distance from York.
Thanks are due to Helen Roberts and Keith Dale for their organisation.

Brinkworth Hall
Its Owners & Organs
History By Maximillian Elliott
The present Brinkworth Hall in Elvington dates from the 1820s, when the old building was extensively
rebuilt by its owner Alexander Mather. The first organ in Brinkworth Hall consisted of one manual and
eight stops with three pedals. On the 19th of January 1826, Alexander Mather died and the organ was put
up for sale. Elvington Parish Council purchased the instrument at auction for use in the Parish Church on
the 25th of September 1826.
By 1928, a replacement instrument must have been installed, because, a two-manual organ was
advertised for sale by Summers & Barnes in the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer.
The Editor would greatly appreciate any further information, regarding these instruments, that YDOA
Members may be able to provide.

7. Organ of the Month
'The Organ of the Month' consists of a series of articles looking at different local instruments and this
month features the organs in:
St Martin-le-Grand Church
Introduction
The earliest references to any organs in St Martin’s Church come from 1557
when the account books show expenditure ‘for removing the organs’ and
1561 for ‘mendynge our organs’. Apart from these two references, very little
is known about the first St Martin’s organs.
For many years, St Martin’s Church had an active ’band’ in the West Gallery
tradition and music was led by the Parish Clerk. There is quite a lot of
documentary evidence regarding the music and musicians of this period.
However, an analysis of such material is not within the remit of the present
discourse and has not been included.

Description
The first modern organ in St Martin’s was built in 1837 by
John Ward (York). It had a limited compass Pedal organ of
19 notes and was located on a platform at the West End.
On Sunday the 21st of May, Dr Camidge (York Minster)
presided at its two inaugural services. In the morning, he
played Handel’s ‘Overture to the Occasional Oratorio’ in
the presence of the Lord Mayor. At the evening service,
the choir of York Minster singing of 100th Psalm, Clarke’s
anthem ‘Praise God in his holiness’ and Handel’s
‘Hallelujah Chorus’.

Description
Robert Postill (York) rebuilt the organ in 1860 and
extended the Pedal to a standard ‘German’ compass. ‘All
the newest mechanical improvements’ were made to the
instrument, including a new action and roller bar. Postill
also added an Oboe 8’, Viol di Gamba 8’ and (possibly)
Diapason 16’. The instrument was re-opened on July the
15th 1860 and the choir ‘(which [was] long known for its
musical attainments) [was] considerably augmented’ for
the occasion.

Builder: Summers & Barnes
Year: 1935
Position: Chancel
3 manuals and pedals
Description
The organ was rebuilt at a cost of £450.
It should be noted that the console of this instrument was an almost exact
copy of a Harrison & Harrison design. Dr Francis Jackson recounts that
Summers & Barnes were particularly proud of it. In his youth, Dr Jackson
was shown around the organ by the firm and played the instrument on
several occasions. This organ suffered a direct hit from an incendiary bomb
on the 29th of April 1942. The church lay in ruins until 1961, when a small
portion of the building was rebuilt by George Pace (mostly consisting of
the South Aisle and Tower).
