Brain-based Learning and Teaching translates the com-plex research bases from educational psychology andneurological science into practical classroom applica-tions. We asked three questions as we reviewed thisbook. First, does the information in this book reflect theknown research in a clear and credible manner? Sec-ond, how does this book compare with standard text-books used in typical educational psychology classesand/or special educational methods classes? And third,if we were to choose to use this book, how and wherewould we integrate it into our curriculum?

Eric Jensen, M. A., is a teacher who has appliedaccelerated learning and brain-based learning ap-proaches to classrooms. Brain-based Learning andTeaching contains 23 chapters (with titles such as“Triune Brain Theory Implications,” “Getting Attention &Keeping It,” and “From Lesson Planning to LearningPlanning”). Jensen includes a 28-page bibliography,reference materials, an appendix that cites organiza-tions that focus on brain-based learning, and follow-upresources (such as workshops and seminars).

Jensen’s latest book offers research summariesand practical advice for instructional implementationbased on reviews of studies that span four decades,with an emphasis on work that has been published since1980. We noticed that more than 500 references werecited in the bibliography: 88% published since 1980 and11% published between 1959 and 1979. Readers fa-miliar with brain-based literature will recognize many ofthe names of the researchers he cites (i.e., ReuvenFeuerstein, Howard Gardener, and Georgi Lazanov).We noted, however, that there were not many experi-mental research articles cited, thus making it difficult toevaluate whether the books cited relied heavily on in-terpretation as distinguished from experimentation.

In this book, Jensen practices many of the tech-niques he recommends. For example, he uses mind-maps as “advance organizers” to visually and succinctlypreview the content of each chapter. A “check for un-derstanding” is placed at the end of each chapter. On

the other hand, Jensen tends to use lists, a techniquefor which he finds negative correlations for achievement!Finally, by citing specific resources and readings thatcan be researched, Jensen makes it possible for curi-ous and more skeptical readers to come to their ownconclusions about his knowledge claims.

Perhaps the most intriguing aspects of this bookare the sections entitled “What This Means To You.” Aftersummarizing what a researcher has discovered, Jensenoften enriches the text with a diagram, a table, or achart to evoke the reader’s visual memory. He thenends the section with specific examples that show teach-ers what they might “do” with this information.

Jensen has provided a valuable service to teach-ers by translating the often arcane language of educa-tional researchers into a more accessible, conversationallanguage. In doing so, however, it seems to us that someimportant information is missing. For example, Jensendoes not include a critique of the research he summa-rizes, nor does he summarize how the studies are con-ducted. With this disclaimer in mind, it is often not pos-sible to fully understand the value of the study beinginterpreted by Jensen. We are sometimes left with thefeeling that the knowledge claims may be a little exag-gerated. However, it should be noted that this lack ofdetailed analysis is found in other educational psychol-ogy textbooks, as well.

When comparing Jensen’s text with other edu-cational psychology textbooks, we found that Jensen’s

chapter headings corresponded well. Most educationalpsychology textbooks have sections on motivation andlearning, cognitive thinking, memory, and so on. Themajor difference between Jensen’s book and standardeducational psychology texts is the almost relentlessfocus on implications for practice. Many of the sugges-tions to teachers from motivational research,constructivist perspectives, even critical theory are em-phasized. Jensen stresses the importance of novelty,emotion, context, choice, personal meaning construc-tion, and the need for an environment free of threat andanxiety.

Some of his conclusions seem to go beyond theresearch available from educational psychology. Forinstance his conclusion that extrinsic reward stronglydeters intrinsic motivation is not supported by a recentmeta-analysis of this literature (Cameron & Pierce,1994). Another instance of this tendency is the strongrecommendation for graphic organizers. The researchliterature in this area again does not lend itself to suchclear cut support for the benefits of maps, webs, andother models. The critical reader must ask the questionwhether these strong generalizations are warranted fromthe research evidence and whether these strong gen-eralizations are correct interpretations of the researchevidence.

Jensen’s strategies for improving learning for stu-dents who are under-performing are well supported frommany areas of educational research: choice, appropri-ate challenge, and complexity in assignments; giving

content personal meaning; using stories and metaphorsto make content relevant; evoking positive emotions inthe learning process; learning content with multiplemodes; using diversity and variety in learning to reachstudents’ differing learning styles; and using apprentice-ships. We detect a redundancy in many of the chapterswhere the same implications for practice are made againand again. There is also some ambiguity: calling forgroup discussion to create meaning, but at the sametime saying in chapter one that group learning needs tobe minimized. In chapters four and eight different ex-planations of what attracts the brain can be confusing.

Some ideas that one of the reviewers (Dr.McGraw, an educational psychology professor who is anewcomer to accelerated learning information) foundvery innovative and supported by personal experiencein trying to achieve conceptual change in undergradu-ate students include the following: suspense, surprise,disequilibrium, uncertainty, and disorder to achieve aricher, more powerful understanding of content.Jensen’s suggestion that chaos and confusion may beone of the few ways to naturally trigger new learningseems to be corroborated. Another similarity is the ideathat conceptual change cannot occur without the con-frontation with our own perceptions, biases, and cul-tural blinders. It is interesting that this principle of con-ceptual change comes from two such diverse fields-brain-based pedagogical theory and a critical theory ofpedagogy.

In contrast, the other reviewer (Dr. Nevin who

has been using various accelerated learning techniquesin her special education methods classes since 1984)uses the technique of inviting students to experimentwith the ideas presented in many of the chapters. Thisviewpoint has been helpful in encouraging special edu-cation teacher education candidates to break out of theircurrent (often narrowly defined) paradigms of viewinglearners as deficient. The chapter on “lesson learningversus lesson planning” is relevant: most special edu-cation lesson planning formats typically focus on whatthe teacher does.

In conclusion, we both firmly believe this book isvaluable reading for teachers at any academic level whowant to improve the level of learning for all their stu-dents. We agree that Jensen’s book would comple-ment the ideas presented in traditional educational psy-chology textbooks. Indeed, this book could help thenovice as well as the veteran make more meaningfulsense of educational psychology knowledge. We alsolook forward to a sequel to this book which might bedevoted to stories about lessons in which these prin-ciples of learning are used.

Abstract

As practitioners of the art and science of accel-erative learning we are faced with some profound chal-lenges: To be sure that our work is firmly grounded inresearch, to answer critics in an intelligent and convinc-ing manner, and to continue to explore the edges ofpotentialities of the human mind and spirit.

In responding to these challenges, we find in-sights by noting parallels to the "new sciences." Bothhave roots in the study of the physical universe. Bothreveal surprises about that universe and invite us torethink previous belief systems. Both offer breakthroughsuggestions on how we can dramatically expand, notonly our learning and creativity, but also our conscious-ness of the human condition and our place in the uni-verse.

Accelerative learning experienced birth pangs ap-proximately 30 years ago with the research of Dr. GeorgiLozanov and others. Its evolution through infancy andteenage years, to early adulthood was fraught with dif-ficulties ranging from critics' honest skepticism to politi-cal repression to outright rejection among scientists andfanatics alike.

There seems to be greater acceptance now. Butin the late 70's and early 80's teachers were taken tocourt and lost their jobs for practicing suggestopedia.They are in good company. Copernicus, Galileo, Dar-win, and more recently, Ilya Prigogene, Karl Pribram,David Bohm, and many others share a similar story. Butthere are many anecdotes of mental turn-arounds; onefavorite is that of the early French Academy which offi-cially pronounced that it was patently impossible for sucha thing as meteorites to exist--until one fell shortly after-wards and broke most of their windows.

Most people don't readily embrace change; ittakes a long time for daring new ideas to gain accep-tance with the general public. As we approach the 21stcentury, however, new paradigms are emerging in vir-tually every field: education, physics, mathematics,chemistry, biology, and neurophysiology. For the sakeof brevity, these areas of study will be referred to as the"new sciences." Their proponents are eminent profes-sionals exhaustively trained in their fields and respectedby colleagues for precision and past contributions.However, their current descriptions of the universe are,frankly, revolutionary.

The work of Dr. Lozanov and Dr. Gateva, al-though carried out in virtual isolation due to the politicalsituation in Bulgaria, parallels that of other "new scien-tists." Some of the basic shared premises are:

a) All matter is interconnected.b) Rational, logical approaches to understand-

ing the world are not always sufficient to comprehendits complexities; a global approach is generally moreeffective.

c) The substrata of information below the levelof consciousness plays an infinitely greater role thanpreviously realized.

d) Since the universe is flowing rather than static,some very surprising events can occur which go againstour previous notion of logic.

In order to put the above into perspective, let usoffer a very brief overview of scientific thought over the

past 300 years. In the West, our inheritance, based onthe thinking of Newton and Descartes, is rational, mecha-nistic, essentially left-brained, and it worked well for usfor centuries. In this classical way of viewing the world,all matter, including the brain/mind system, was thoughtto be comprehensible once it could be broken into com-posite pieces and analyzed. This system is very clean;it is still responsible for most of our thinking. Unfortu-nately, it neglects to account for consciousness, for ac-celerative learning, for many other phenomena reportedby scientists and lay people worldwide.

At about the time Dr. Lozanov began his studiesinto the potential powers of the mind and came up withastounding results, others in a variety of fields were doingthe same. And the pejorative descriptions commonlyapplied to quantum physicians were similar to thoseapplied to suggestopedia: absurd, impossible, bizarre,beyond belief. Even Einstein once said that quantumtheory reminded him of the "system of an exceedinglyintelligent paranoic, concocted of incoherent elementsof thought." Are these theoreticians crackpots? Or arethey geniuses? If the latter is the case, then "surely arevelation is at hand."

Before we probe into the somewhat mind-bog-gling theories of people like Prigogene, Pribram, andSheldrake, let us provide an example of the old and thenew paradigms in a more familiar field: education. Theworld and its ensuing pedagogy, according to Newton,was linear, static, predictable. The world and its ensu-ing pedagogy, according to our renegade theoreticians,presents a strikingly different picture:

d) Concern with norms d) Concern with the individual’sperformance, stressing limitlesspotential

e) Emphasis on aesthetics;inclusion of the arts, comfort,breath

Those of us in education can, doubtless, think of manyother examples. We know the patterns well. The oldassumptions were based on linearity, limited potential,and obeisance to established norms. The new assump-tions are based on a belief in the virtually limitless po-tentials of our minds and our creativity.

Let us observe how similar but even more dra-matic changes in consciousness are encouraged by anew paradigm in chemistry. In 1977 Ilya Prigogene wonthe Nobel Prize for his theory of dissipative structures.Essentially it accounts for leaps to higher levels of com-plexity that occur throughout the universe. It answersquestion that has confounded scientists for centuries:

Given the existence of entropy as a fact of living struc-tures, how is it that the universe is not "running down"but in fact continues to create higher patterns and morecomplex levels of organization? This restructuring, thisescaping to a higher order, occurs in fields as diverseas biology, chemistry, pyschology, sociology, and edu-cation.

To understand this theory we need to recall thatin the patterns of nature nothing is fixed. Everything iscomposed of particles that are in constant flow. Opensystems (like seeds, certain chemical reactions, or thebrain) are all dissipative structures; they maintain theirform through a constant exchange of energy with theenvironment. They are highly organized but always inprocess. The more complex a system, the more it isinterconnected in many ways and at many points, andthe more vulnerable it is to internal fluctuations. Whenfluctuations in the energy levels are minimal, the sys-tem absorbs them and the basic structure is not affected.But when the fluctuations reach a critical size, they "per-turb" the sytem. By increasing the number of new inter-actions, the pattern breaks up and reorganizes into anew, higher order.

The more complex a system, the more "unstable"it is; that is, the more likely it is that a large perturbationwill upset the delicate balance of the system and it willrestructure itself into a new order. The brain, of course,is a perfect example of a dissipative structure. It is theultimate in complexity; it is in a constant state of flowand interaction with the environment; it is characterized

by abrupt shifts and sensitivity to perturbation.Brainwaves reflect fluctuations of energy, and in nor-mal consciousness, beta waves dominate most people'sEEG patterns. Psycho-relaxation tends to increase theslower, larger alpha and theta waves. Inward attention,in other words, generates a larger fluctuation in the brain.In a relaxed state, then, fluctuations can reach a criticallevel, large enough to provoke the shift into a higherlevel of organization. This is apparently when our stu-dents have the "Aha! I got it!" experiences. It is also thestate where original, creative, intuitive knowing occurs.

What interests us via a vis suggestopedia is thatlearning shifts are often preceded by stress involvingexcitement, creative tension, even some confusion andanxiety. We know that crisis is essentially another facetof opportunity and that the creative process requireschaos before form emerges, thus a perturbation is es-sential for a dramatic shift or awakening to occur. Thisapparent contradiction (relaxation vs. stress) has beensomewhat confusing to students of accelerative learn-ing. However, we must keep in mind that only underthe right circumstances does a perturbation lead to anew structuring. If the system is too "stable" (read fixed),the new information will not affect it. If there is too muchstress, it could lead to a breakdown of the system. Thesolutions: 1) create a supportive environment as a fab-ric on which high content material, presented in a highlyemotional manner can be safely introduced and 2) keepup a varied rhythm in the classroom, balancing relaxingwith high energy activities.

At a Florence, Italy training in 1989 Dr. Lozanovsaid: "If there is not a huge amount of material beingpresented, this is not suggestopedia." Does this notsound like Prigogene's dissipative structure (perturba-tion of the system is required to move to a new level)?The crucial point here is that Prigogene's theory not onlyhelps to explain why suggestopedia is so effective, butit also explains scientifically why suggestopedia is quali-tatively different from traditional learning. It cannot besaid that accelerative learning is simply doing more ofwhat works, or adding new elements, or increasing theamount of information taken in. Suggestology is of adifferent order! It is the theory of the author that whenwe have equipment of sufficient power and subtlety tomeasure it, the brain will actually look different whensuggestopedia is occurring. There will be more synap-tic connections. Blocks, which are now believed to bemore than merely ideas, but actually physical, observ-able dense protein matter, will be circumvented andmany other measurable changes will be apparent.

Several new ideas emerged from Ilya Prigogene'stransformative work. One is chaos theory which scien-tists say is more than just another theory. It is funda-mentally a new approach to seeing, studying and inter-preting the universe with far-reaching implications. It isa mathematical system to help explain non-linear struc-tures, those which appear to be unpredictable and er-ratic, ie., the weather, clouds, rivers, the stock market,fibrillating hearts, in fact most systems in the universe(Goerner, 1994). Although predictable processes areinvolved, the outcomes are often unpredictable. But the

remarkable results are beginning to point to a universethat is precisely structured with a deep underlying unityeven in areas that have previously appeared chaoticand random. This is the amazing world of fractals andstrange attractors, patterns within patterns, and the pos-sibility that it is dynamic relationship with the externalworld which gives rise to all form. On a purely subjec-tive, mataphoric level, it is interesting to note the simi-larities between chaos theory and suggestopedia. Inboth cases there is a carefully ordered underlying plan.On the surface the form may appear to be interestingyet somewhat chaotic. However, when the observershave arrived at the point where they can see how all thepieces fit together, they can apppreciate the beauty ofthe patterns involved, both in the art of the presentationand in the internal pattern of the materials being pre-sented. In education chaos is often equated with fear.But we need to understand that chaos is natural andnecessary. Without it, scientists say, there would be noorder, no creativity.

The other element of chaos theory that is rel-evant to us is the concept that when dealing with non-linear systems, if you add A and B you get A plus B plussomething extra, something unpredictable. The wholeis greater than the sum of the parts. Trying to under-stand the universe by breaking it into bits is rather liketrying to comprehend King Lear by putting a copythrough a shredder and reading each minute fragmentin isolation... or trying to teach people to communicatein a new language by analyzing class 3 stem-changesin irregular verbs. Unfortunately, however, in both the

educational and scientific communities it is this reduc-tionist approach that usually still holds the power andthe purse.

Let us now move from dissipative structures andchaos theory to another, equally mind-boggling discov-ery known as Bell's Theorum. It was proposed in 1964by physicist J.S. Bell and experimentally confirmed in1972 by Einstein. When the particles of a two-particlesystem (which are identical twins in polarity) are sepa-rated and the polarity of one is changed by an experi-menter, the other changes at the same precise nano-second. They remain mysteriously connected. Laterexperiments found that identical twins separated at birthand unaware of each other's existence displayed un-canny similarities in tastes, personal decisions, life stylesand wives! Apparently elements in the universe areconnected, bonded, on both micro and macro-cosmiclevels. This, too, corroborates Dr. Lozanov's belief inthe importance of the suggestive link. Is it posible, per-haps, that when there is an emotional connection be-tween members of a class, that entrainment (breathing,speaking, gesturing in union) might occur? This subtlebut deep connection of teacher with students and thestudents with each other in a suggestopedic class may,indeed, be proven by science to play a much greaterrole in the efficacy of learning than previously believed.

A fourth area and a crux of quantum physics isthe conundrum of wave vs. particle. It seems that notonly does the basic stuff of existence turn out to be bothwave and a particle (seemingly mutually contradictory

states), but that two facts can determine which aspectwill reveal itself in a given moment. The first is simplythat someone is watching, called the observer effect.The second is expectations or intentionality. As teach-ers we may not be too concerned about wave vs. par-ticle. But look what intentionality can do:

William Tiller, a Stanford University science pro-fessor, reported in 1986 the results of an experiment inintention. He created a device that releases electronswhen subjected to healing intent. Normally the devicewould emit a maximum of one burst of electrons everyfive minutes. When individuals intentionally focusedhealing energy through their hands more than 50,000bursts were recorded. When they placed their handsaround the device with no healing intention (focusinginstead on mathematical calculations) no bursts wererecorded. Later, Tiller added visualization, and afterthousands of experiments, he concluded that there isan energy beyond the electromagnetic spectrum, emit-ted by humans, that can activate the release of elec-trons. This subtle energy, he hypothesized, can trans-fer infor- mation directed by the mind and focused byintention, attention, imagery, and love.

The fifth and sixth areas from the new scienceswill be discussed together, since, combined, they pro-vide insights that are more profound than when studiedseparately. Physicist David Bohm of the University ofLondon talks about the universe in terms of implicateand explicate levels of reality (Bohm, 1991). Neurosci-entist Karl Pribram of Stanford sees the brain as a holo-

gram interpreting a holographic universe (Talbot, 1991).While both of these scientists are highly respected intheir fields, the theories they propose are rather abstract,esoteric, difficult to prove. Both men hasten to point outthat theirs are working models and, as always in sci-ence, they will probably be altered or replaced as newinformation becomes available. In themeantime, theyare thought-provoking and may provide additional in-sights into how suggestopedia works.

Briefly, the theories are that our brains mathemati-cally construct "concrete" reality by interpreting frequen-cies from other realms of patterned primary reality thattranscend time and space. In a state that Dr. Lozanovcalls "vigilance," that relaxed altertness so necessaryfor accelerated learning to occur, students may actuallybe accessing the invisible matrix that generates "con-crete" reality. This theory could account for all the phe-nomena that seem to contravene existing scientific "law"by demonstrating that such restrictions are themselvesproducts of our prerceptual constructs. Theoretical phys-ics has already demonstrated that events cannot bedescribed in mechanical terms at subatomic levels.Furthermore, creative thinkers and problem-solvers infields as diverse as business, psychology, science, art,music, theology, mysticism, poetry, and everyday livinghave attested to receiving insights from "some otherrealm." And this has been reported for a long as humanhistory has been recorded.

Holography is a method of lensless photographyin which the wave field of light scattered by an object is

recorded on a plate as an interference pattern. Becausethere is not focusing lens, the plate appears as a mean-ingless pattern of swirls. However, when the photo-graphic record--the hologram--is placed in a coherentlight beam, often a laser, the original wave pattern isregenerated. A three dimensional image appears. Thefascinating fact is that any piece of the hologram willreconstruct the entire image.

David Bohm says that the hologram is a startingpoint for a new description of reality: the enfolded or-der. Classical study of reality has focused primarily onsecondary manifestations--the unfolded aspect of things,not their source. But these appearances are abstractedfrom an intangible, invisible flux that is not comprised ofparts; it is an inseparable interconnectedness.

Bohm, like everyone else we have been discuss-ing here, says that primary physical laws cannot be dis-covered by a science that attempts to break the worldinto parts. And Karl Pribram believes that the brain's"deep structure" is essentially holographic, analogousto the concept of holography for which Dennis Gaborwon a Nobel Prize (Talbot, 1991.)

If, as it is believed, the brain structures see, hear,taste, smell, and touch by sophisticated mathematicalanalysis of temporal and spatial frequencies, then thesemathematical devices may depend on interactions atthe junctions between cells (synapses) via a network offine fibers on the branching axons. Nerve impulses inthis fine-fiber network manifest in slow waves with the

potential to carry out the mathematics. (Other research-ers have speculated that the alpha brainwave rhythmmay be a timing device necessary for the computation.However, Dr. Lozanov stated at his training in Florence,Italy, 1989, that his research indicates that an alpha stateis not a prerequisite for accelerative learning. It may ormay not be present and doesn't necessarily affect re-sults.) Pribram has suggested that interference patternsare stored across the membrane of nerve synapses aspermanent changes in their electrical sensitivity. In op-tical holography, literally thousands of holographic im-ages can be recalled separately by illuminating a sceneor some aspect of a scene like the one originally stored.In an analogous way, Pribram proposed, the brain-cellsnyapses could contain thousands of holographic im-ages. This model could account for the phenomenonof association--how one image or experience or idearecalls another somewhat like it, how perception leadsto thought to perception to thought in a stream of con-sciousness, an unfolding and constant refolding of ho-lographically stored memory.

A fanciful picture of interfering wave fronts of electricalactivity in the area of nerve synapses. Pribram believesthat very subtle changes in electrical sensitivity in thearea of the synapses store the holograms. A virtuallyiinfinite number of holograms could be stored togetherin these synapse areas all over the brain. The storageprocess may involve the constant flowing of electricalactivity that takes place between synapses.

Most interestingly, Dr. Lozanov presents a modelsimilar to the one above. The brain constructs are com-

pared to branches of a tree, and we are reminded topresent information globally. If we were to diagram asuggestopedic lesson plan on this model, we would fillin the major branches first to give the students an over-all picture. Traditionally, however, a teacher would startwith the first branch, with all its outshoots, and methodi-cally cover every detail, then review, then make sure,with a test, that students understood, and then finallygo on to the next point. With a system that is so incom-patible with the way the brain and the world function, itis no wonder that our education systems are less thaneffective. On the other hand, a presentation that ini-tially touches on the major points, Lozanov tells us,calms the personality because the student can see thewhole picture but doesn't have pressure to know andremember everything. Most importantly, neuronic tracesare being formed so that the student will eventually fillin the details (the smaller branches), and the new knowl-edge will more naturally go into long-term memory.

And so we find parallels between the work ofPribram and Lozanov. Both researchers suggest thatthe hologram and the brain seem to have informationdistributed thoughout the system., and both suggest thatlearning will be more efficient when access and recallare handled non-linearly.

One other rather eerie similarity between the find-ings of brain research and holography is that when onepart is missing, another provides the information,although somewhat blurrily. Patients who have had apartial lobotomy surprised researchers with their ability

to produce information or skills that should have beenlost, somehow "making up" for that storage area thatwas destroyed. Similarly, when a piece of a holographicphoto is broken off, the whole picture can be seen inthat piece, no matter how tiny it may be.

Apparently each fragment of the universe is en-coded to produce information on the whole. The En-glish poet William Blake definitely thought this to be true:

To See a World in a grain of Sand,And heaven in a Wild Flower,Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand.And Eternity in an Hour.

After centuries of mutual mistrust, are we begin-ning to see the potential for romance among philoso-phers, poets, and scientists? Perhaps even a marriage,for most literary critics would read the above lines as ametaphor. Pribram, the penultimate scientist, suggestsmore boldly than the poets have dared that there maybe no such thing as metaphor, or, more specifically, thatall metaphor is true. Everything is isomorphic. (InHermetic philosophy, "as above, so below".) We maynow be experiencing the effects of a social hologram, apattern of interconnectedness of individuals. And whatare the implications for suggestology?

The following are anecdotal, and, therefore, notscientific. However, since we may soon have to rede-

fine what is scientific, and since they fit so well with im-plicate order and holographic theory, they may be ofinterest to the reader.

In 20 years of teaching Spanishsuggestopedically, the author has observed/experiencedthe following:

1) Students will occasionally come out with a wordor phrase that they swear they have never been ex-posed to before.

2) The sense of interconnectedness of teacherand class participants appears to be the most powerfulelement in achieving high results.

3) One of the precepts of accelerative learningto which most of our colleagues adhere is "the totalresult is greater than the sum of the elements that makeup a suggestopedic class." But why is this? How, in amechanical world, is this possible?

Finally, we must visit, albeit briefly, one more "cut-ting edge" theoretician who rejects reductionist ap-proaches. Rupert Sheldrake's field is biology, and he isthe author of the hypothesis of formative causation. Verysuccinctly, he proposes that the form, development, andbehavior of living organisms are shaped and maintainedby fields as yet unrecognized by any science (Sheldrake,1981). These are labeled "morphogenetic fields" andare molded by the form and behavior of past organismsof the same species through direct connections across

both space and time through a process called "morphicresonance." In esence, he is saying that once some-thing is learned by enough members of a species, thechances of other members learning it faster due to ac-cess to the morphogenetic field are vastly increased.According to Sheldrake, examples of learning throughmorphic resonance are the following: parallel inven-tions, the intuitive knowing of psychomotor skills suchas tennis or drawing, the power of legends, myths, sto-ries, and ritual, and the cumulative effect of an idea heldby a number of individuals.

The jury is still in session on this one, but shouldthis theory or some variant of it prove true, it would ac-count for several beliefs of suggestology:

1) The concept of 'prestige' (learning somethingfrom someone of long-standing respect is likely to bemore effective than learning it from just anyone). Is itpossible that the prestige factor is also related to thefact that, since many people have learned from thisperson, or in this way, that a morphic resonance hasbeen formed, and, as time goes on, it is more and morelikely that the behaviors will be repeated? For example,the one-minute mile was once considered impossible,but once it was achieved, each succeeding achieve-ment increased the possibility of its happening again.Similarly, it was once considered impossible to learn 3-5 times faster, but each time this is achieved, would itnot make it more likely to be repeated in the future?

2) The use of classical music that has been ap-preciated by millions of people over time has beenproven to be more effective than music that was com-posed yesterday. The same would be true of copies ofclassical pieces of art hanging in the classroom.

3) As teaching media, myths, stories, symbols,and rituals that have touched many peoples over cen-turies would affect students more powerfully than a trans-lation of a current movie, for example. If ths is true,then we need to be very careful in writing or selectingour dialogues or other class materials.

As we conclude, we must remind ourselves thatthe 'new sciences' and suggestology have offered tomany people's (but certainly not everyone's) satisfac-tion viable alternatives to traditional ways of viewing theuniverse. We find that our renegade thinkers hold manyelements in common: a belief in a non-linear, wholisticapproach to understanding life, a sense of the intercon-nected nature of the universe, a rejection of theNewtonian belief that all can be understood through left-brained analysis, and, perhaps, a promise of a new worldorder. The honest seekers also realize that we have along way to go and the insights of the past years aresimply a beginning, an offer of hope, an invitation formore. As we strive to understand, not only the natureof learning, but the overall plan of the universe, we needto take into account the wisdom of the past, blend itwith the knowledge of the present, and figure out a wayto weave it with whatever the challenges the future mayoffer.

To Blake, single vision was pure sensation such as sci-entists (Newton in particular) cultivate. Twofold visionadded an intellectual appreciation of the object. Three-fold infused the perception with an emotional value, anda fourfold vision crowned it with mystical insight as to itsplace in the universe.

Beulah, often represented as the moon, symbolizes astate of repose during which the mind is receptive tointellectual and spiritual suggestions.

THE FUTURE: As we approach the 21st century onething is certain: The future is uncertain. Every fieldwhich attempts to understand life and the universe isdiscovering that "things fall apart, the centre cannothold."

And this is why it is crucial for suggestology tobecome widespread everywhere that learning occurs.

and the Search for theAlpha State

Introduction: The Search for Alpha

In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, as is wellknown to JALT readers, a new and unique teachingmethod called Suggestopedia was developed at theInstitute of Suggestology in Sofia, Bulgaria under thedirection of Dr. Georgi Lozanov. The suggestopediclanguage class featured (and, indeed, still features) arelaxation session for unconscious assimilation of thelesson material. The original suggesto-pedic sessionwas divided into two parts, active and passive, with eachpart comprising twenty minutes, the ideal meditationperiod in Yoga. During the active part, the teacherpresented the appropriate foreign-language words orphrases with three different yogic intonations -declarative, whisper, loud command - while the studentslooked at the dialogue on the printed page and repeated

to themselves (using inner speech) the appropriateforeign words and phrases. (The Bulgarian translationof each word group was read first - quickly and in amonotone). During the passive or concert part, theteacher read the language dialogue a second time, butnow in a soft, persuasive voice over a background ofslow movements from baroque concerti grossi while thestudents, with eyes closed, visualized the text. (Theslow movements used in the original concert, excerptedfrom the chamber music for violin and/or strings ofCorelli, Handel, Bach, Vivaldi and Telemann, have, bydefinition, a rhythm of 60 beats to the minute, the idealbeat for meditation in Indian music). In the two parts ofthe session, the material was presented rhythmicallyon an eight-second cycle: two seconds - translation; fourseconds - foreign-language phrase; two seconds -pause. The students were trained to breathe deeplyand rhythmically in harmony with the teacher’s voiceand/or the baroque slow movements (Bancroft, 1994).According to its proponents, Suggestopedia contributedto a marked decrease in fatigue and tension, on theone hand, and a marked increase in memorization oflanguage materials, on the other. The relaxation andimproved memorization were said to be largely due tothe “alpha state” - a state in which the body is relaxedbut the mind is alert.

In Suggestology and Outlines of Suggestopedy,particularly in Chapter IV, “Towards a General Theoryof Suggestion,” Lozanov (1978) includes scatteredreferences to electroencephalographic (or EEG)investigations, as well as pulse and blood pressure

measurements, of subjects under hypnosis, in a stateof sleep, in the waking state and when executing yogaexercises. These investigations are linked to researchinto the subjects’ “reserve [or learning] capacities” (p.179). While details of brain wave research are notalways provided, Lozanov gives the results of researchconducted at the Institute of Suggestology: “it can beconcluded that hypermnesia is not necessarily boundup with strenuous mental bioelectric activity and greatstrain. Hypermnesia can be achieved in states ofconcentrative pseudo- passiveness with an increasedalpha rhythm” (p. 250).

At the Institute of Suggestology in the 1960’s and1970’s, particular attention was paid to EEG (as well aspulse and blood pressure) investigations ofsuggestopedic students. In contrast to Westernresearchers, Lozanov investigated the use of “alphabiofeedback” with normal subjects and in an educationalsetting. In Chapter V of Suggestology and Outlines ofSuggestopedy, there is a section entitled: “Suggesto-pedic Instruction and Cerebral Bioelectrical Activity” (pp.232 ff). Attention at the Institute of Suggestology wasfocused on EEG analysis of students before thelanguage class commenced, during class and beforeand after the special session for memorization oflanguage materials. It was found that, following thespecial relaxation or concert session, alpha wavesincreased while there was a decrease in beta waves (p.236). “The strongly marked increase in beta waves andreduction in alpha waves, typical of intensive mentalwork, were absent in the EEG of students during

suggestopedic instruction in a foreign language. Thechanges registered were typical of mental work of lowintensity [ . . . ]” (p. 239). In addition, it was found that“the concert state was characterized by the alpha rhythmincreasing over its level before classes [began], and thebeta rhythm dropping under its initial level” (p. 239). Inthe Lozanov thesis, alpha is linked to the bringing intoplay of the students’ reserve capacities and to improvedmemory and concentration. There is no discussion,however, of what causes the increase in alpha duringthe special session. It is the aim of this paper, througha discussion of biofeedback and brain waves (especiallythe alpha wave), to show that the original suggestopedicconcert contained a number of the essential elementsfor producing the alpha state - a state considerednecessary for improved memory and concentration bymodern researchers such as Brian Morrissey (1996).

It seems likely that Georgi Lozanov was awareof research in brain wave biofeedback going on outsideBulgaria in the 1960’s and 1970’s; he was invited toCalifornia in 1971, for example, by Barbara Brown, theauthor of New Mind, New Body and Stress and the Artof Biofeedback. It is not possible to say with certaintythat Lozanov was directly influenced by Americanresearch in his “brain wave” investigations; however,one can say that educators and researchers at theInstitute of Suggestology in the 1960’s and 1970’s werein tune with this “modern” area of research: brain wave(and, in particular, alpha) biofeedback.

In the 1960’s and 1970’s, particularly in the United

States, a great deal of interest was expressed inresearch into biofeedback - said to be an ideal “drug-free” way of treating human illnesses because it madeavailable information about biological activities to theindividual concerned and evoked complex mentalprocesses to change the body’s physiological activitiesand to exert learned control over “involuntary” functions.The number of researchers burgeoned in a few yearsfrom less than 10 to more than 2,000 active investigatorsin the biofeedback field. (Early researchers included:Brown, Green, Mulholland, Kamiya, Budzynski, Murphy,Stoyva). In 1969 the Biofeedback Research Societywas formed - renamed in 1976 the Biofeedback Societyof America and in 1988 the Association of AppliedPsycho-physiology and Biofeedback. Coinciding withmovements in “pop” psychology, as well asTranspersonal Psychology, and “holistic” medicine, asocial revolution and the “hippy” movement, anincreasing interest in Transcendental Meditation andEastern religions as well as in psychedelic drugs anddream consciousness and a renewed interest inhypnosis, brain wave biofeedback received greatattention in the media in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.Excitement was generated by the fact that brain-waveimpulses, which elude our normal consciousness, arepiped through EEG machine electrodes, amplified bydelicate circuitry and finally translated into light, soundor some other medium that is accessible to the senses.Biofeedback and the EEG were said to be researchstrategies for exploring consciousness (or varying statesof consciousness). The alpha brain wave, in particular,was linked to an altered state of consciousness - a new

state of mind, one that was stress-free, revelatory ofmind/body harmony and in tune with ancient and mysticspirituality.

Articles in Tart’s Altered States ofConsciousness, which was first published in 1969,included studies of changes in brain functioning duringthe altered states of consciousness (ASC’s) producedby the practice of Zen and Yoga. The adept practitionersof both Zen and Yoga showed almost continuous alphawaves (normally associated with a state of relaxedalertness in ordinary subjects) during meditation. Inaddition, Kamiya (1972) showed that ordinary subjects(but especially those with an interest in meditation,introspection, sensitivity training, good interpersonalrelationships, dreaming, etc.) could be trained, byconventional operant techniques, to produce an EEGpattern similar to that found in meditating Zen monksand yogis, viz., almost continuous alpha rhythm.Coincident with the development of alpha biofeedbackwas the study of brain electrical activity as related tosusceptibility to hypnosis. People with a fair amount ofalpha in the EEG were found to be those who were mostsusceptible to hypnosis. Research studies conductedin the late 1960’s reported that high susceptibles (i.e.,those individuals who are very suggestible) producedmore waking alpha density than nonsusceptibles (DePascalis, 1989).

Subjects reported the high alpha state as beingone of general pleasantness and relaxation. In thepopular press, the mood state of a subject was said to

be changed by having the subject “turn on” his/her alpha.Once tuned into him (her) self, almost anyone, itappeared, could learn to identify specific brain wavestates and, in short order, learn to control them. Thepossibility of not only controlling brain wave activity butalso that of influencing subjective feelings associatedwith brain wave activity naturally elicited a wave ofenthusiasm among behavioral scientists - not to mentionmembers of the general public. The popularity of brainwave research nurtured a cult of the “alpha high”; thealpha experience was idealized as an intrinsic good.Experts in EEG reported interesting correlationsbetween the state of emotional set and consciousness,on the one hand, and the amount of alpha wavesgenerated by the subject, on the other (Basmajian, 1989,p. 3). Since alpha was said to be a principal brain wavecorrelate of meditation, there was an enthusiasticpopular belief that alpha wave biofeedback was a“shortcut meditation technique” (Brown,1974, p. 326).The potential of biofeedback techniques for regulationand modification of mind and consciousness was saidto be “enormous” (Brown, 1977, p. 146).

The original enthusiasm generated by thedevelopment of brain wave biofeedback stemmed, inpart, from the belief that it might provide a royal road tohigher (or even mystical) states of awareness orconsciousness. After an initial period of euphoria,however, alpha enhancement training with biofeedbackbecame increasingly controversial. The growingsuspicion that something was not quite right with theearlier studies culminated in a flurry of critical analyses.

These were directed both at the methodologicalinadequacies of the reported studies and theirphilosophical underpinnings. With respect to the latter,it was charged that much of the work, instead of beingdirected to a scientific understanding of alpha control,was using alpha enhancement as a pathway towardhigher (or mystical) states of consciousness (Yates,1980, p. 277). The alpha experience was said to be notsimply due to alpha enhancement but to such factorsas suggestion, expectations, initial bias andexperimental setting. As reported in Yates (1980, p.306), Plotkin stressed particularly the importance ofsuggestion and expectation in alpha experiments andthe similarity of the situation created in many alphastudies to the situation created in sensory-deprivationexperiments. Attacks were delivered on the “cult ofalpha” and the “alpha culture.”

While the “new (exciting) age” of mind/bodyharmony did not really come into being, alphabiofeedback did not really lead to teaching everyonehow to feel happy and serene and biofeedback therapy(described initially as “unprecedented” and “limitless”)did not prove to be the universal panacea for whichresearchers had hoped, biofeedback can makeindividuals aware that they must take responsibility forthe maintenance and control of their own health and ithas proved useful in the treatment of organic illnessesand psychological problems. Brain wave biofeedbackhas been used to treat subjects with social andpsychological problems, as well as psychosomaticillnesses (such as insomnia and muscle tension) and

chronic pain - such as that associated with migraineand tension headaches, for example (Hutchison, 1994).Biofeedback, including alpha conditioning, has playeda significant role in developing a methodology for helpingepileptics to achieve better management of their seizureconditions (Lubar, 1989, pp. 84ff). Rehabilitation ofphysical function has been one of the major successesof biofeedback (Yates, 1980, p. 487); results ofbiofeedback training with disabled people have been“impressive” (Yates,1980, p. 498).

Writing in the 1970’s, Brown stated that one ofthe most constructive uses of biofeedback may be ineducation (Brown, 1974, p. 387). Biofeedback, shemaintained, can be used in conjunction with teachingmachines to alert the student to his/her optimal mind/body state for any given learning situation. Physicaland mental attitudes more suitable for learning, as wellas improvement of attention span by voluntary means,can be learned more readily via biofeedback.

Since the heyday of the 1960’s and 1970’s,biofeedback has been used for teaching in the classroom(Peper, 1979), to promote visual attention, to stimulatecreativity, to induce a state of relaxed alertness. It hasbeen used in education in conjunction with the reductionof stress levels and very often with those who havelearning problems (Hutchison, 1994, chapter 30, “FromLearning Disabilities to Learning Superabilities”). EEGbiofeedback is used to work effectively with children whoexperience attention deficit disorder (ADD) and otherdisorders of behavior. This includes children who are

hyperkinetic and/or learning disabled (Lubar, 1989, p.77; Hutchison, 1994). However, as can be seen frombibliographies in such books as Hutchison’s MegabrainPower, most of the current research in biofeedback isin the health area: psychiatric illness, alcohol and drugaddiction, epilepsy, stroke, phobias, memoryimpairment, stress reduction, etc. As Hutchison (1991,pp. 94 ff) points out, it is much easier to get funds to doresearch for medical and therapeutic purposes than itis to explore the possibilities of using mind devices onperfectly healthy people for the purpose of stimulatingmental excellence.

In recent years, there has been a plethora ofconsumer- oriented EEG devices, many linked withcomputers and/or combined with sound and lightstimulation. (For example, the CAP scan [ComputerizedAutomated Psychophysiological scan] and the IBVA[Interactive Brainwave Visual Analyzer] combine recentbreakthroughs in computers, computerizedelectroencephalography and biofeedback [Hutchison,1991, p. 152; Morrissey, 1996]). In contrast to the1970’s, these “mind machines” are small, portable, moreaffordable and user-friendly (Hutchison, 1991). Thesedevices can not only observe brain wave patterns butcan also induce relaxation and alter brain wave patternswithout lengthy training. While many new devicesappear with exaggerated claims and personaltestimonies, as opposed to solid research data(Hutchison, 1991, 1994; Ostrander and Schroeder,1991, chapter 19), “mind machines” have proved to be(or have the potential to be) effective tools for

accelerated learning (Hutchison, 1991, 1994).

It is useful to reexamine the area of biofeedback(including brain wave biofeedback) as it relates not onlyto health in the sense of mind/body harmony but also toan ideal learning state (the state of relaxed alertness),one that was most definitely sought by suggestopedicresearchers and educators at the Institute ofSuggestology in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s andone which is crucial today if students are to be preparedfor the challenges of the twenty-first century.

(Bio)Feedback

The term “feedback” is of relatively recent origin,coined by pioneers in the field around the beginning ofthis century. Mathematician Norbert Wiener, a foundingfather of research in feedback, concisely defined it as a“method of controlling a system by reinserting into it theresults of its past performance” (Karlins and Andrews,1972, p. 26). Bio feedback is simply a particular kind offeedback - feedback from different parts of our bodysuch as the brain, the heart, the circulatory system, thedifferent muscle groups, long believed to be outside therealm of conscious control. Biofeedback is essentiallythe return (the feeding back) of biological information tothe person from whose body the information came.

Humans are regulated by two nervous systems:the voluntary and the involuntary. The voluntary, orsomatic nervous system includes the nerve cells andfibers that serve the skeletal muscles. It is responsible

for all arm, leg and jaw movement, for changing posture- in short, for all movement that we normally regard asdeliberate or “consciously controlled.” The involuntary,or autonomic nervous system involves the eye pupils,heart, blood vessels, stomach, endocrine glands andall functions traditionally considered automatic or“beyond our control” (Karlins and Andrews, 1972, p. 34).Insofar as the brain is concerned, the very brainprocesses involved in patterned neural self-regulationare normally unobservable and not available to directconscious experience (Schwartz, 1979, p. 57).

Biofeedback may be defined as the technique ofusing equipment (usually electronic) to reveal to humanbeings some of their internal physiological activities orfunctions, normal and abnormal, in the form of visualand auditory signals, in order to teach them to exertvoluntary control over their own internal somatic activitiesor functions (such as heart rate, blood pressure, muscletension, brain waves) by manipulating the displayedsignals. Most instruments developed for biofeedbackhave been designed so that the individual undergoingbiofeedback training can see or hear (or both) themonitor of his/her selected biological activity more orless continuously. This technique inserts a person’svolition into the gap of an open feedback loop (hencethe name biofeedback). Unlike conditioned responses,the animal involved, here necessarily a human being,must want voluntarily to change the signals in order tomeet certain goals (Basmajian, 1989, p. 1). Biofeedbackis “the process or technique for learning voluntary controlover automatically, reflexly regulated body functions”

(Brown, 1977, p. 3).

To many researchers, the idea that individualscan learn to control a selected, unfelt internal bodyactivity means that the individual can be “conditioned”to react in a specific way to a stimulus, i.e., to a signalcontaining the biofeedback information. In laboratoryexperiments and in some clinical applications, thisapproach to achieving “control” is brought about bygiving the biofeedback signal every time the individual’sphysiological activity changes in a predetermined way.This process is called reinforcement and the signal isused to reinforce what the individual has learned. He(or she) is rewarded for having completed aperformance, that of changing a selected physiologicalactivity in a desired direction, and his/her brainmechanisms must now search for relationships betweenperforming correctly and the biofeedback signal that ledhim/her to the correct performance. According to Brown(1977, p. 15), the only useful result of biofeedbacktraining would be that kind of voluntary control over bodyactivity that can be invoked at will and when necessaryor appropriate or desirable. (This control is similar tothat exerted by the Indian yogis who are able to regulateor dominate their inner beings by slowing the heart beator controlling breathing in closed spaces, etc). With theexception of those suffering from severe behavioraldisorders, the patient’s (or subject’s) training shouldreach a point where s/he can demonstrate control overthe selected physiological function without thebiofeedback signal.

According to Brown (1977, p. 146), “the ultimatebiofeedback may well be brain wave biofeedback.”Although the discovery was made (in the late 19thcentury) that electrical activity could be recorded fromthe cortex of the brain, it was not until the 1920’s thatHans Berger discovered the existence of brain wavesand showed a relationship between brain wave patternsand mental states. (It is somewhat difficult to point outexactly when the first operant conditioning studies ofthe EEG were carried out, although, since the 1940’s,changes in the EEG have been believed to beassociated with different states of consciousness). Theremarkable contribution of biofeedback to brain/mindresearch is its ability to produce relatively “steady states”(Brown, 1977, p. 146). Once individuals learn voluntarycontrol to sustain the presence of specific patterns or ofspecific elements of brain activity, such as alpha activity,the identification and precise definition of accompanyingfeeling states and mind activities becomes much easier.Brain wave biofeedback may be used for “disorderedfunctions” or for producing, sustaining and controllingbrain/mind states conducive to tranquillity and creativity.According to Brown (1977, p. 153), “EEG biofeedbackhas probably contributed more toward understandingthe relationship between brain electrical activity andthe products of brain activity labelled mental andemotional than any other prior scientific approach.”

Brain electrical activity patterns are usuallyreferred to as the EEG, the abbreviation of the recordedbrain wave pattern called the electroencephalogram.(The electro-encephalograph is a device for recording

the electrical activity of the brain). EEG generally (ortraditionally) implies the standard recording of brainelectrical activity from eight or more electrodes orelectrode pairs placed on the scalp according to astandard configuration. For each pair of electrodes theelectroencephalogram has a channel of amplificationand an ink- writing voltmeter that records on foldingpaper tape. Electrodes placed on the scalp pick upimpulses that arise from the outermost area of the brain,the cerebral cortex. To record the electrical activity ofdeeper regions, needle electrodes can be surgicallyinserted into those specific areas.

What we know about brain electrical activitypatterns is almost totally dependent upon theinstruments used to record them. Since EEG patternsrecorded from different scalp areas over the brain canvary remarkably, considerable care must be taken ininterpreting both the research and clinical results of EEGbiofeedback. Lester Fehmi’s Brain Wave BiofeedbackSynchronizer, for example, in contrast to devices whichonly monitor one or two of the brain’s major lobes, is amulti- channel phase-sensitive biofeedback EEG, onethat simultaneously monitors all the major lobes of thebrain and signals when the user is in a state of whole-brain, in-phase synchrony (Hutchison, 1991, pp. 320-21). While traditional EEG’s display only the frequencyof the highest voltage they pick up on a specific locationon the scalp, the Mind Mirror is said to take in, processand display the entire frequency spectrum in a logicaland easily understood pattern (Hutchison, 1991, p. 175).

Throughout the history of EEG machines,attention has been focused on relatively slow brainwaves and, for the most part, on those slow, very largecomponents that are signs of brain pathology. (MostEEG machines dampen the amplitudes beginning atabout 30 Hz. [cycles per second] and eliminate all brainelectrical activity occurring above frequencies of 50 or60 Hz.) The rationale for limiting EEG recording to slowbrain wave frequencies has been mainly the inability ofrecording pens to reproduce high frequencies, theimpossibility of electronic circuitry to discriminate verylow voltage, fast EEG activity, and the apparentlyrelatively greater importance of the slow, high voltagewaves for human activity.

Brain Waves

Insofar as brain waves are concerned, it is mainlythe rhythmic waves that have been labelled: beta, alpha,theta and delta. (Hans Berger, the pioneer of brain wavestudy, discovered alpha in 1929. The main thrust ofclinical and experimental studies with theelectroencephalogram [EEG] has been in the area ofoperant control of brain wave activity, with particularemphasis on the production and control of alpha rhythm).When people are aroused and/or focus attention on theoutside world or external events, they usually produceonly beta frequencies. If they close their eyes and thinkof nothing in particular, they generally produce a mixtureof alpha and beta. If they become drowsy and sliptoward sleep, theta frequencies often appear and thereis less evidence of alpha and beta. Delta waves are not

normally present except in deep sleep. In approximateterms, delta waves are 1 to 4 Hz; theta are 4 to 8 Hz;alpha are 8 to 13 Hz. (or cycles per second). “ Beta” isgenerally used to indicate all EEG activity of (assumed)frequencies higher than that of alpha. As the term isused by different investigators, it can refer to rhythmicor nonrhythmic EEG activity and to different frequencyranges (e.g., 13 to 28 or 28 to 40 Hz). In general, betaactivity is quite low voltage and because of this and itsclose relationship to the characteristics of electrical noisein frequency and voltage, it is difficult to quantifyprecisely. Technically speaking, beta is not a smoothrhythm, but “a flurry of electrical static” (Karlins andAndrews, 1972, p. 73).

Brain wave activity is said to be related tobehavior. It is generally accepted that beta activityaccompanies alert behavior, information processing andconcentrated mental activity such as that involved insolving problems in mathematics. High beta activity isassociated with complex cognitive tasks and iscorrelated with attentional or memory processes; lowerbeta activity is associated with anxious emotions. Betadescriptors, which have both positive and negativeaspects, include: active, alert, anxious, energetic,excited, exhilarated, lively, restless, stimulated and tense(Lubar, 1989, p. 76).

Theta activity, which is slower than alpha, canbe recorded from many portions of the cortex or fromthe cerebrum in both awake and sleeping individuals.On the average, theta waves are about one-half the

frequency of alpha waves. They are sparse in the normalwaking EEG pattern and are found most frequentlyduring drowsiness and dreaming. Theta production isgenerally possible only with the eyes closed. However,theta activity can occur during alert behavior, generallysporadically, and can appear at moments of suddeninsight or recognition of events in memory. Theta isoften associated with day-dreaming or reverie and vividvisualizations and hypnogogic imagery. Delta waves,which have a lower frequency range, occur almostexclusively during the deeper stages of sleep and usuallyappear as single waves. Theta and delta thus representslower rates of cortical synchronization than alpha.“Physically, the trip from beta to delta is a rhythmicunwinding; psychologically it is experienced as a quietingof the mind” (Karlins and Andrews, 1972, p. 74).

The Alpha Wave

According to the terminology committee of theInternational Federation for Electroencephalography andClinical Neurophysiology, the official definition of alpharhythm is: “ rhythm, usually with a frequency 8-13 c/secin adults, most prominent in the posterior areas, presentmost markedly when eyes are closed, and attenuatedduring attention, especially visual” (Lynch andPaskewitz, 1979, pp. 326-27). The alpha wave is notthe most dominant, largest or most prevalent brain wavebut it does have the distinction of being discovered first(by Hans Berger in the 1920’s, as mentioned above)and of being the most studied. Alpha appears to be aslowing down of electrical discord into a pulsating hum

which sweeps regularly over the brain cortex, usuallyfrom front to back. The alpha rhythm is a rhythmicspindle (between 8 and 13 Hz., as mentioned) whichcan be recorded best from the posterior portion of thehuman or cerebral cortex. (It is important for practitionersusing biofeedback for altering EEG activity to realizethat the EEG recorded with scalp electrodes in humansare the tip of an iceberg [Lubar, 1989, p. 68]). Accordingto Brown (1974, p. 313), one of the reasons why themost easily observed aspect of brain activity appearsto be the alpha rhythm is that EEG recordings aregenerally done under conditions of relaxation. (Areclining chair is said to be a useful item of equipment.Many patients prefer to have the chair tilted to a semi-reclining position [about 45 degrees from the vertical]so that they have a good head rest [Stoyva, 1989, p.174]).

Although alpha is defined as rhythmic EEGactivity having a frequency of somewhere between 8and 13 Hz., alpha frequency varies from person toperson and it varies in the same individual dependingon a number of factors, such as level of attention, stateof consciousness, mood, etc. Researchers have dividedsubjects as follows: 1) those with no alpha, even witheyes closed and their mind at rest; 2) those with alphaonly with their eyes closed and their mind at rest; 3)those with alpha present even with their eyes open andtheir mind active (Lynch and Paskewitz, 1979,pp. 328-29). The exact characteristics of alpha activity can alsodiffer depending on the location of the scalp recordingelectrodes. Frequently alpha in the frontal and pre-

central areas can differ remarkably from that found inthe mid-scalp or occipital regions. Not only are there ahost of different kinds of alpha, but there are manyinfluences that affect what is seen on the EEG record.Just to name a few: the type of electrodes and theirplacement, the type of recording device, skull thickness,electrical environmental noise, genetic factors,personality, intelligence, conditions of stress and theindividual’s mode of reacting to stress, endocrine factors,physiological drives such as hunger and fatigue,attention, motivation, the amount of information theindividual has about his (or her) brain waves, body andhis/her task (Brown, 1974, p. 318).

The behavioral state most closely identified withalpha activity is relaxed wakefulness (i.e., an alert butrelaxed state). This implies that the brain state is areceptive one, and that it is not actively engaged in anyspecific mental or emotional activity. Alpha also appearswhen attention is focused inwardly. Alpha activity canbe present, however, during certain kinds of alertnessand attention, if the stimulus is not truly novel (Brown,1974, p. 323) or when a particular mental activity ishabitual. It is reported by Brown (1977, p. 150) thatEinstein maintained an EEG pattern with considerablealpha while solving moderately complex mathematicalproblems, but that, when he was confronted with a newkind of problem, his alpha disappeared. According toRosenboom (1976, pp. 12-13), during periods ofrepetition or reproduction of highly rehearsed patterns,one observes associated increases in alpha inmusicians. It is possible that the “production of alpha

by a performing musician is related to his [her] ability toconcentrate on the internal state, and, throughdisciplined practice, disengage him [her] self from theneed to perform physical orientation in order to producethe ‘right’ notes or music.”

Alpha tends to disappear during mental work,alerting, orienting, dreaming, hunger, visual activity,emotional arousal and frustration. One of the firstreported characteristics of the alpha rhythm was the factthat it would block when the subject was presented withany of a variety of sensory or attentional stimuli (Lynchand Paskewitz, 1979, p. 326). On the other hand, “alphaactivity occurs in the feedback situation when anindividual ceases to pay attention to any of a number ofstimuli which normally block this activity” (Lynch andPaskewitz, 1979, p. 335). These stimuli may becognitive, somatic, emotional, etc. In addition to thefeedback process, any other process by which theseinfluences may be removed (as in the original passiveor concert session in Suggestopedia) will result inincreased alpha activity.

Reports of biofeedback studies continue tosupport neurophysiologically derived notions that thesubjective feeling state during the presence of alphaactivity in the EEG is a generally tranquil, comfortable,relaxed, pleasant feeling, although there may beoccasional exceptions. (Alpha descriptors include: atease, calm, composed, passive-like, peaceful, placid,relaxed, tranquil, uncritical and unfocused [Lubar, 1989,p. 76]). Some people report the flow of considerable

imagery, almost a day-dreaming reverie. (Kamiya[1979], on the other hand, found that the presence ofalpha was reported as being associated with less visualimagery). Subjects in the “ alpha feedback” situationoften report dissociative phenomena such as feelingsof floating, being unaware of the immediate environmentand distorted time perception (Lynch and Paskewitz,1979, p. 333). The fact that, in general, the presence ofalpha activity in the EEG and the absence of beta activityindicates a mental-emotional state of relaxedwakefulness is almost reason enough to suggest its usein individuals who complain of anxiety and tension andwhose EEG shows an abnormally low content of alpha(Brown, 1977, p. 153). Certain investigators feel thatalpha biofeedback is appropriate as a stress-reductionmeasure, particularly for emotional stress (Brown, 1977,p. 187). One chief objective of alpha training is that, bylearning to turn the attention inwardly, the subjectnaturally decreases the visual input of anxiety-relatedinformation (Brown, 1977, p. 240). Alpha’s associationwith relaxed wakefulness is useful not only in therapyor self- exploration but also in stress-free learning. Alphais ideal for learning new information, data, facts, materialthat one wants to be fully aware of and have readilyavailable in waking consciousness (Hutchison, 1994,p. 211).

Concepts such as turning the attention inward,passive concentration, relaxing physically, not trying,emptying the mind (as in certain forms of meditation),encouraging the subject to invent mental strategies, areall useful for promoting alpha (Brown, 1977, p. 241).

Alpha will sometimes increase to a marked extent insubjects who are just sitting quietly in a comfortable chair.Closed eyes or, if eyes are open, an environment withsubdued lighting (or a dark room), as well as a state of(induced) relaxation are conditions in which alphaproduction is normally maximal and the individual burstsof alpha are frequent (Brown, 1977, p. 171). Theaverage human being exhibits alpha activity (which isonly a relatively small part of the brain’s electricalcomponents manifest in the EEG pattern) only betweenone and perhaps 20 percent of the time when the eyesare open, and anywhere from 35 to 75 percent of thetime when the eyes are closed; alpha rarely occupiesmore than 50 percent of the total EEG activity (Brown,1977, p. 234). According to Brown (1977, pp. 238-39),“it is a simple fact that alpha becomes maximal in amountwhen the eyes are closed.”

Alpha may also appear when the eyes are open.Move the eyes (i.e., the eye muscles) up and alphaappears; move them down and it disappears.Biofeedback researchers have tended to limit theirrecordings and feedback signals to the occipital scalpareas that overlie the interpretive visual cortex area,presumably because of the eye-alpha relationship(Brown, 1974, p. 328). Alpha waves can be made toappear when the eyes are open if attention is turnedinward, away from the outside world, if one learns to“observe without looking” (Green et al.,1979, p. 128).In contrast, studies have shown that the greater thecomplexity of the visual input, the stronger is the alphablocking response. According to Rosenboom (1976, p.

12), listening to or performing “stable, non-movingmusical drones” (i.e., repetitious, monotonous-soundingmusic) is almost always accompanied by the presenceof “more than normal alpha.” (Participation in a “dronesound” usually involves a kind of meditation whichseems “logically connected” to the alpha state). Itappears, however, that some type of “optimal level ofarousal” exists for the occurrence of alpha activity.While, if the subject is too aroused, alpha activity will bediminished, if the subject becomes too drowsy, alphawill also be diminished (Lynch and Paskewitz, 1979, p.330).

The Suggestopedic Concert Session andAlpha

It can be seen, from an examination of the NorthAmerican research on alpha bio-feedback and theoriginal version of Suggestopedia, that a number of theessential elements for producing the alpha state werean intrinsic part of the original suggesto-pedic languageclass - especially of the original passive (or concert)session. During this session, as mentioned above,the teacher read the language dialogue in a soft,soothing and persuasive voice over a background ofslow movements from baroque chamber music whilethe students relaxed in their chairs and breathedrhythmically and deeply in time to the rhythm of the musicand the teacher’s voice. The original suggestopedicconcert session incorporated physical and mental (orpsychological) relaxation: a relaxed posture and innerconcentration or visualization (i.e., inward focusing).

Students’ eyes were closed during the original passivesession and they sat quietly in special chairs with a 45degree angle and a head rest. The language materialsfor memorization were read over a background of slow-moving, repetitious and monotonous-sounding music.Students were told not to pay direct attention to thelanguage materials being read but just to relax and listento the music. Lighting was subdued in the classroomand the classroom atmosphere was calm and pleasant.Indeed, it was probably because of the “alpha state”that students were able to memorize large amounts oflanguage material effortlessly - often, it was claimed, tolevels of hypermnesia.

Since the new “mind machines” (Hutchison,1991) can be used to get students quickly and easilyinto the alpha state, what is needed, according toMorrissey (1996), is a fully computer- automatedaccelerated learning classroom where participantsdevelop control over their brain wave activity throughbiofeedback training and where brain wave states canbe changed at desired moments in the teaching/learningcycle and the appropriate state prolonged, once it hasbeen induced. Morrissey believes that tomorrow’sclassroom will be brain wave driven; teaching methods,styles, materials and the like will be determined by thebrain wave activity of the learners. Brain wavetechnology equips educators with the means fordetecting and/or confirming suggestive effects in theclassroom through the collection and utilization ofscientific data (Morrissey, 1996, p. 59).

In contrast to most other researchers inaccelerated learning who subjectively evaluate theirstudents’ learning state, Morrissey (1996) is of theopinion that it is very important to reproduce the brainwave patterns which were operational during the originalsuggestopedic class and to verify these objectively withthe appropriate equipment. With his system, calledbrainwave biotek, he shows that we can scientificallydemonstrate and provide feedback of the effects whichvarious suggestive means (dimmed lights, concertreadings, use of special music, etc.) as well as variousteaching strategies (games, songs, readings, etc.) haveon students’ EEG’s and determine what effect thoseEEG’s are having on intellectual performance andachievement (Morrissey, 1996). His research using thecomputer-based (and wireless) Interactive BrainwaveVisual Analyzer (IBVA) shows that concentration,memory recall and classroom learning will be optimizedif the instructor alternates cyclically between inputtinginformation (especially during the concert session) withstudents maximizing alpha and their activating andelaborating upon the information while maximizing beta.However, as Morrissey (1996, pp. 52-53) admits, moreresearch is needed in such areas as memory expansionand long term retention of materials. In his foreword toMorrissey’s Ultimate Learning States, Donald Schustersays: “ Exciting possibilities exist. Can we at lastduplicate Lozanov’s stimulating report of hypermnesia(extraordinary memory)? Can we repeat it on demandand specify its conditions? Can we train classroomteachers to use it in public education? Potentially thesequestions can be answered affirmatively, but it’s up tous as researchers and educators to get busy doing theresearch.”
