WHY AM I ANARCHITECT?Born in Columbus, Indiana and close to a creative Mother and analytical Grandfather who both encouraged my interests, I joke that I had no other choice but to be an architect. The truth is, it is all I ever wanted to be. I was surrounded by buildings designed by the Saarinens, Roche and Dinkeloo, etc… I learned from the civic buildings as I experienced them, shaping my views on architecture. Each building is the architect giving something of themselves to the community. My desire as an architect is to pay the gifts I received growing up in Columbus forward through my work utilizing the following values:
PRAGMATISM AND POETRYArchitecture should be both pragmatic and poetic, allowing the function and spectacular to come together creating a building that conveys meaning. Without this meaning, architecture has no structure and cannot speak.
TOTAL ENVIRONMENT Architecture should be site relative connecting to both history and context, creating a dialogue and connection with the environment in which it is constructed.
INCLUSIVENESSArchitecture should be didactic in its construction and speak to its materiality, allowing one to read the various layers of the building to create their own story.
OPTIMISMArchitecture should always push itself forward into an uncertain future, creating a work of lasting value not only for the present, but for future generations.

PRAISEWORTHYCOMPETITIONColumbus, IN - Unbuilt - Master’s Thesis
Twentieth-century philosophy was driven by either/or: Modernism with the abstract and pragmatic, Postmodernism with the material and poetic. Either/or is no longer sufficient. Architecture necessitates a both/and condition, bringing together the abstract and material, the pragmatic and poetic, and the object and field into a cohesive whole creating dialogue with context and disseminating meaning. In Columbus, Indiana this both/and proposition exists through the patronage of J. Irwin Miller. It is a belief that architecture “reflects what a city thinks about itself and what it aims to be”. Columbus’ Modernism responds to previous generations, bringing together pragmatic and poetic. This thesis aspires to create an architecture depository, a record of Columbus’ material history. In combining Eero Saarinen’s Irwin Union Bank with a pragmatic-poetic addition, the project engages in praiseworthy competition with it’s architectural ancestors.

LEADERSHIP/TEACHING/VOLUNTEERINGFor the last few years, the idea of giving back - be it through volunteering, teaching/mentoring, leadership, etc… has been a passion of mine. In many ways it aligns with my personal values. I grew up in a poor family and saw my mother and stepdad work hard and sacrifice to give myself and my siblings opportunities they didn’t have. I didn’t get to where I am today without some help, and now it is my turn to give back.

THE ART OF ARCHITECTUREWith pragmatism often overwhelming the poetic working on affordable housing, a couple of years ago I turned to painting as a way to express myself and my views on architecture. Drawing inspiration from buildings I have been to that greatly inspired me, the task becomes translating their poetry onto canvas - challenging my creativity and forcing me to be painterly and poetic. From the northern parts of Norway to my hometown, each painting displays the poetry of each building and focusing on aspects of each project that inspire me.

Dorchester Art + Housing Collaborative is a re-envisioning of the former CHA Dante Harper townhomes, which had fallen into a state of disrepair. The five building renovation revived 32 mixed-income rental units composed of 2-3 bedroom units and added a new Art Center in the center of development programmed by the Rebuild Foundation. The Art Center creates an open and inviting space for programming, creating and displaying art, and creates a connection to the neighborhood. Finished in 2014, I was involved as Staff Architect for a year during construction administration, assisted with design and finish selections, and created presentation drawings.

A new construction, 62 unit five-story affordable senior housing building in West Town, McCrory Senior Apartments is taking cues from the historical housing stock and the First Baptist Congregational Church building to weave a new modern building into the historical context of the neighborhood. Norman brick, cast stone, and bays all recall this historical context, and the two-story entry will include a mural inspired by the stained glass of the church. I have worked on this project since mid-2015, and currently serve as the Project Architect responsible for design and construction documentation, coordination, and leading junior staff during construction administration.

The first phase in a revitalization of the Swope/Mt. Cleveland neighborhood of Kansas City, Curls Manor provides affordable housing for seniors and is a beacon of development to come. The 4-story wood frame construction building consists of two wings with a central elevator and entry node clad in standing seam metal panels. Playing on context, brick and fiber cement were used to break down the massing of the building while still being lively and colorful. An angled bump out forms the community space, allowing residents to gather and socialize. Responsibilities on the project included code analysis, coordination with consultants and city code officials, CDs, and day-to-day construction administration.

Spring Hill Senior Residences is located on a challenging site in West Dundee, IL. With the site originally slated to be a big-box retail store and now to be used for housing, site conditions such as a berm blocking views from the surrounding context and existing easements / parking were navigated in creating an appropriate site strategy - bringing the building to the Northeast corner of the site, distancing it from existing big box retail and allowing parking to be located to the south. Brick, bays, and paneling in a Mondrian-esque pattern break up the mass of the building, re-interpret historical aspect of West Dundee’s downtown, and create a lively feel. Responsibilities on the project include coordination with clients and consultants, specifications, and leading junior staff in production.

Parkline Row is a transit-oriented development situated along 157th Street and adjacent to the Oak Forest Metra station. A major unifying feature on the site is a “green screen” which incorporates solar, shading, and water management systems. This feature will use solar energy to power site lighting, provide shading at patio doors, and feed into an integral gutter system. Additional storm water management techniques will be used along the parkway. As project designer, my role consisted of design, modeling, and production of presentation documents for submittal to the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

THE BURNHAM AT WOODLAWN PARKChicago, IL - Completed 2015 - Project Designer / Staff ArchitectLandon Bone Baker Architects
Part of a master plan to revitalize the Cottage Grove corridor that was formally the site of the formerly distressed Grove Parc Plaza, The Burnham combines several functions under one roof - senior housing, management offices, and the Woodlawn Resource Center. With the color of the precast concrete recalling the limestone at the nearby University of Chicago, Trespa and Swiss Pearl panels were placed on the facade along with use of form-liners and thin brick to create a lively, rhythmic facade along Cottage Grove avenue. The building also pushes back from the property line, allowing for the creation of a plaza. Responsibilities included construction documentation and administration, along with participation in design.
