Fourth Sunday of Easter
Lectionary: 49 Gospel JN 10:1-10
Spiritual Reflection: Jesus’ claim of being the Good
Shepherd is not only because He goes in search of the
Lost Sheep, but also because He is the best one to
lead us to the pastures of eternal life.
Spiritual Questions:
1. What does Jesus as “sheep gate” mean to you
today?
2. Are you living your Christian life in abundance?
How?
3. The Lord is my shepherd: is there anything you
lack?
4. How is Jesus a shepherd and a lamb to you?
5. If you were Jesus, would you let yourself in past
the sheep gate ?
Good and gracious God,
You call each person by name
and invite them to follow you.
On this World Day of Prayer
for Vocations,
may each person hear and
respond to the call they have
received.
We pray for all discerning
marriage, the chaste
single life, consecrated life,
or ordained ministries,
that your Holy Spirit
would guide, inspire,
and strengthen
them.
May your
Church and the
world be
enriched by the
"yes" of your
children.
Amen.
Liturgical Notes notas litúrgicas 2
Due to the cancellation of public Masses we will suspend requests for
intentions until further notice. Mass intentions that have been requested
and already scheduled will be honored during Fr. Pastorius’ daily private
Mass in the order that they were scheduled. Since he is saying only one
Mass a day there will be an abundance of requests that will not be
fulfilled until our schedule returns to normal. Please know that all
intentions not used during this time will be rescheduled when normal
Masses resume.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Parish Office is CLOSED.
Employees will be coming in periodically to check mail and voicemails and
many are continuing to work from home. Please be patient as we all adjust
to this new way of doing business. If you need to speak to someone in the
office but are not sure who to direct your call to, please leave a message for
Maria Murillo and she will be sure to forward your request/question to the
correct employee. She can be reached at 636-227-5247 ext. 1604.

1. School Update As I begin my bulletin
column this week, I would like to ask you to
pray the following prayer with me. It is a
prayer that many of us know. It is called the
Serenity Prayer:
God, give me grace to accept with serenity the things
that cannot be changed, Courage to change the things
which should be changed, and the Wisdom to
distinguish the one from the other.
Living one day at a time, Enjoying one moment at a
time, Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did, This sinful world as it is, Not as
I would have it, Trusting that You will make all
things right, If I surrender to Your will, So that I may
be reasonably happy in this life, And supremely happy
with You forever in the next. - Amen.
On Friday, April 24
th
, I alerted the parish
through Flocknotes and our school parents
through Fast Direct that we currently had
around 70 students enrolled for the 2020-
2021 school year, and if everyone who was in
the process of registering completed their
registration, we would end up with fewer
than 100 students. I then asked the school
parents to set up a meeting with me so that I
could talk with them (and still keep social
distancing guidelines) because I want their
input. Through the same note, I announced
that Mr. Sturgill, our principal, has decided
to leave St. Joseph and become principal at a
Catholic School in South St. Louis closer to
his home. I want to make it clear that at the
time that I am writing this (April 28
th
) no
decision about the future of our school has
been made. I am still gathering information
so that I can make a proper recommendation
to the Archbishop about our school’s future.
I once again ask you to pray for everyone
involved in making this decision and for all
who will be affected by it.
2. Online Church We are trying our best to
reach out to everyone in as many ways as
possible. We have Sunday Mass ready for
your family to view every Saturday starting
at 4PM. We offer daily Mass on our website
from Bishop Barron. Sunday Mornings at
10AM you are invited to join me on Zoom for
“ELEVATE” where we are going through a
series right now on Salvation History. I am
offering a daily Gospel reflection that can be
found on Facebook, Flocknotes, and our
parish website. Our youth group is meeting
three times a week on Zoom (Sunday
7:15PM, Wednesday 7:30PM, and Friday
7:30PM) and Greg Barker and Deacon Dan
are offering a series of reflections through
Zoom.
3. Home Prayer Spaces One of the great
things that we can do to deepen our faith life
at home (even under normal circumstances)
is to create a home prayer space. I would
encourage you to send pictures of your Home
Prayer Spaces to me at
[email protected] so we can
share them with one another. Here are some
suggestions/tips to help you:
1) Choose a focal piece: This item will
serve the purpose of drawing your eye, and
therefore your attention, to the space. It
should be somewhat large so that you notice it
as you walk into the room; for example, your
favorite religious statue or holy
image featuring Jesus, Mary, or your favorite
saint. Choose something that has special
meaning to you or your family. Our Blessed
Mother is always a great choice!
2) Pick the right spot: Find an attractive
and inviting spot in your home, such as a
corner nook. You just need it big enough to add
a comfortable chair and a small side table. A
spot by a window is a good idea, or some other
secluded spot in the home. Include two chairs if
you have a family. If you are able, try to keep
this space special and set apart exclusively for
quiet prayer and spiritual reading, and avoid
using it for other activities.
3) Add Catholic items to your nook:
Display your focal piece in the spot you
selected and add a crucifix, a rosary, Catholic
prayer and/or meditation books, a bible, and a
few prayer cards. You probably have many of
these items already scattered throughout the
house that you can bring together into one
place.
4) Accessorize: In churches you don’t find
saint statues and holy images without fresh
flowers and candles around them as a sign of
faith, love, and devotion. Do the same in your
prayer space to add a bit of reverence and
beauty.
4. Leave It To Us Some friends of mine
have started a St. Louis chapter of a new
community service organization to help
people in this time of need:
Hello St. Joseph Community,
Our names are Sarah and Rachel Noser and we are
your neighbors from Sacred Heart in Valley Park.
We love visiting your beautiful church to see Fr. Tom,
Reverend Ricardo, and your welcoming parishioners!
We are writing today to ask for volunteers for a
nonprofit organization called Leave It To Us. Its
mission is to help the most vulnerable during the
COVID-19 quarantine get needed groceries or
pharmacy items delivery fee-free. Volunteers, armed
with masks and gloves, go retrieve groceries. Then,
they go to the senior’s home and swap the groceries
for payment, which will be in a secure location on the
porch. Lastly, they will call the senior and let them
know their groceries have been delivered. With this
process, seniors can stay in their homes and will have
less exposure to the Coronavirus, hopefully making
them feel safer. If you are interested or have anyone
who could benefit from our services, please feel free to
contact us. Sarah: [email protected],
314-677-4102; Rachel: [email protected],
314-660-5223. For more information on the
organization visit: https://www.leaveittous.global/
5. Blessed Virgin Mary Madness We have
created an online fundraiser combining the
fun of March Madness brackets (which we
missed out on this year), an opportunity to
learn more about the Blessed Virgin Mary, a
chance to win some money, and most
importantly, a chance to help two great
causes. The first great cause is our own St.
Vincent DePaul Society. The Second is
Stephen Smith’s To the Nations organization
(Stephen gave our parish mission two years
ago). His organization is making major
efforts to help the people of Uganda fight the
spread of the coronavirus by sending them
soap, sanitizers, and other things we take for
granted. Go to https://
www.stjoemanchester.org/mary-madness to
learn more about the fundraiser, register and
complete your bracket. There you will also
find the many different titles of Mary and
different prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The cost to participate is $10. After
completing your bracket you will need to
make your $10 donation online through our
online giving program, WeShare. All entries
are due by Mother’s Day (May 10, 2020).
6. Parish Council It is time for us to have
new members added to the Parish Council.
When I first became pastor, I was told by
“experts” in the field of lay ministry that the
new way of doing parish council was to have
twelve people serve simultaneous three-year
terms. After three years of being at St.
Joseph, I do not think it is in the parish’s or
my best interest to have a complete change
over on the parish council at this time. I am
therefore going to ask four of the twelve to
remain for one more year. Then I will choose
(by drawing names out of a hat) four people
to serve a two-year term and four more for a
three-year term. In this way, the new Parish
Council will consist of four returning
members, four new members with two-year
terms and four new members with three-year
terms. The role of the council is to form a
small faith community with the pastor. In
this community the pastor shares his ideas
about the future of the parish and he feels
comfortable enough to allow the council to
challenge him. If you are interested please
email me at [email protected].
“Even
the
weakest and most vulnerable,
the sick, the old, the unborn and
the poor, are masterpieces of
God’s creation, made in his own
image, destined to live forever,
and deserving of the utmost
reverence and respect.”

Stephen Ministry
Who benefits
from Stephen
Ministry?
Everyone. Those
receiving care as well as those
providing the spiritual growth.
Our pastor even benefits as the
caring ministry at St. Joseph is
expanded. Most of all, you
benefit from the knowledge that
special care is available to you
should you need it. In addition,
you now have a place to refer a
friend, relative or coworker who
is going through a difficult time.
Stephen Ministry makes St.
Joseph a much more caring
place. For more information,
call Anne Grant, 636-399-7633
or Jerry Nash, 636-386-3650.

Spiritual Ponderings
Coronavirus & the Sacraments
I had already completed my Spiritual Ponderings for the month of May when a friend of mine
recommended that I read an article that he forward to me on Facebook. It was called: “Epidemic
Danger and Catholic Sacraments” and was written by Thomas Joseph White, O.P., Director of the
Thomistic Institute in Rome. I felt God asking me to use this article as a stepping off point for my
own reflections on what this strange time of “social distancing” means for the Church. Quotes from
his article will be in bold and my commentary and reflections will be in normal font.
As the Church enters a Triduum where a great majority of the faithful lack public access to the
sacraments, I’d like to offer some reflections that stand in sharp contrast to those currently
being promoted by the editor of First Things, my friend Rusty Reno, regarding the current
pandemic, civic responsibility, and access to the sacraments. In fact, I take his views to be
rather misguided, though well-intentioned, and am grateful for his magnanimity in inviting me
to offer an alternative position.
I think the way Thomas White begins his article is awesome in the sense that he shows that he is
interested in creating a dialogue and not conflict. I also give Rusty Reno credit for allowing Thomas
White to offer an opinion that differs from his own in a magazine where he is one of the chief editors.
This is how things are supposed to work in the Church. These are two people who demonstrate that
they are trying to offer their thoughts on an issue without beating each other up. There have been
many great debates in the history of the Church. The only time a person becomes a heretic is when
the Church finally declares that an idea is wrong and someone continues to stubbornly hold onto it.
I realize the issues are fraught, and anyone’s view is necessarily subject to a fair amount of
fallible prudential judgment. I hope, however, to at least ground my arguments in both Catholic
principles and a realistic assessment of our current situation, so as to develop what I think are
measured and appropriate positions.
The preceding quote from Thomas White demonstrates another important part of how to argue in an
appropriate way. It shows that he has put a lot of thought into what he is about to say. This does
not mean that he is right or wrong, but it does show that he is not speaking to hear himself speak or
to fill in the silence.
My first claim is based on a basic given of natural law. The state has a fundamental obligation to
protect human life, especially when it is gravely threatened. This obligation is compounded in a
time of epidemic if there is a danger of a generalized collapse of the medical system through a
rapid and overwhelming influx of new cases of a deadly disease, which COVID-19 certainly is.
In a context where the medical system breaks down, deaths from the disease multiply and
many other maladies cannot be safely treated. The state, then, has a moral obligation to seek to
halt or slow the spread of the disease. In requesting a thoroughgoing but temporary quarantine,
governments across the world are following both traditional, time-tested procedure and proven
scientific advice. In doing so they are acting in accord with human inclinations to protect life
that are both basic and intrinsically good, even ineradicably so, despite the effects of sin on
political organizations. Civic governments are wounded by sin, but not radically depraved.
They can still pursue and uphold basic natural goods, as they are seeking to do in this case.
We, Catholics, believe in Divine and Natural Law. Divine Law meaning the Law of God which is
manifested in Natural Law – the laws instilled by God into nature when He created the world.
According to the principals of Natural Law the state (Civil Government) is supposed to align its
laws with Natural Law. This is why we Catholics get so worked up over the fact that abortion is
legal.
There is something different between quarantining people in order to save lives and quarantining
people because of who they are. Our civil leaders knew that they, our medical systems (hospitals,
testing, etc.), would be overwhelmed if they did not do something to stop the halt of this disease.
They are therefore trying to protect/save lives by asking us to social distance.
Furthermore, because temporary (two to three months) quarantine measures are the essential
key to stemming transmission rates so that societies can learn to deal with this illness more
competently, quarantine is also a necessary first step in the restoration of public economic well-
being and civic freedoms. Opposing the two (health vs. civic flourishing) is scientifically
unrealistic and ethically irresponsible.
Human beings have a tendency to make it a “this thing” verses “that thing” issue. As Jesus said, the
Devil likes to divide. Human society cannot flourish while so many of its people are dying. At the
same time, we must admit that we are in an uncharted area for most of us because financial hardships
can put people’s lives at risk also. We must remember that addressing this issue as an “us” verses
“them” mentality will not help us. Instead it must be a “we are all in this together” mentality.

Just for Kids
Sharing the Gospel You are one of God’s sheep. Jesus calls you
by name. You recognize his voice. Close your eyes. Listen to the
voices of your family and friends. You can tell who is talking by
the sound of their voices. You choose to follow Jesus on his path.
You love God above everything. You love your neighbor as
yourself. You share your toys, money and food with your family
and the poor.
Prayer Jesus, help me hear the right voices, and not follow the
wrong voices.
Something to Draw Draw a sheep following Jesus along a road
that leads into heaven.
Mission for the Week I will listen and follow the directions of
my parents right away.
