Easter Sunday
The Mass of Easter Day
Lectionary: 42 Gospel JN 20:1-9
Spiritual Reflection: “Do not abandon
yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people
and hallelujah is our song.” - Pope John Paul II
Hallelujah means “Praise God.” We are praising
the winner of the battle between Life and Death.
Spiritual Questions:
1. Does the way I live my life proclaim the Good
News of the Resurrection?
2. Have I ever really faced the darkness of the
empty tomb?
3. Do I keep a prayerful vigil during times God
feels absent?
4. How will I live my life today in order to bring
people to a deeper faith?
5. What does the word “Alleluia” mean to you?
Liturgical Notes notas litúrgicas 2
Due to the cancellation of public Masses we will suspend requests for
intentions until further notice. Mass intentions that have been requested
and already scheduled will be honored during Fr. Pastorius’ daily private
Mass in the order that they were scheduled. Since he is saying only one
Mass a day there will be an abundance of requests that will not be
fulfilled until our schedule returns to normal. Please know that all
intentions not used during this time will be rescheduled when normal
Masses resume.

1. Easter Sunday
We give you praise for an even greater sign
of new life: the resurrection of your Son...
We praise you in this Easter season.
Change our lives, change our hearts to be
messengers of Easter joy and hope. We
make our prayer through Jesus Christ, our
risen Lord forever. Amen (Opening Prayer
from Easter Sunday Mass).
2. Easter Sunday Ideas
Making Jesus the center of your family’s
celebration can present a challenge when
you cannot go to Mass. We should make
an effort to remind ourselves and help our
children understand that Jesus is the giver
of Easter gifts—His love, His sacrificial
death, the salvation we have through Him.
Here are some ideas of how to celebrate
Easter at home:
+ Put a spiritual twist on the tradition of
decorating Easter eggs. Before dyeing
the hard-boiled eggs, use crayons to
write an Easter message on each egg.
Because the crayon wax keeps the dye
from adhering in those spots, your
“Jesus is Risen” and “Jesus Died for
You” messages will show through
clearly.
+ Stream and/or watch the celebrations of
Holy Week together. Or celebrate the
day as a family by reading passages of
scripture that recount what Easter
commemorates.
+ Create a playlist of Praise and Worship
songs or sing songs together as a family.
+ As a family, choose a few craft projects
that emphasize the meaning of Easter.
Do an internet search for ideas. Use
your completed projects to decorate
your home for your family celebration.
+ Celebrate the Resurrection of Christ by
doing the kinds of things Jesus came to
earth to do. Extend God’s love to others
by doing some type of service project
(remembering social distancing).
+ Enjoy a big family breakfast in
celebration of the Risen Lord.
+ Do some research on how the
Resurrection is celebrated in other
cultures. Turn the Easter celebration
into a learning experience by enjoying
traditional Easter foods and activities
from another country if possible.

4. Greetings from Father Binu
Fr. Binu sent word through email that he is
doing fine. His order has added an extra
hour of Eucharistic Adoration for the
special intention of protecting our world
from this illness. They are in the second
week of a lockdown so please pray for
Father Binu, his order, and the seminarians
that he serves. Please also pray for Fr. Binu
as he has been named Rector of the
seminary.
5. Coronavirus
Archbishop Carlson has extended his order
for no public Masses until after Easter.
We are working hard to provide online
content for you during this time at
www.stjoemanchester.org. In addition to
the information on the main page, we have
set up a subsection of our website we are
calling: “Live this difficult moment with
the strength of faith, the certainty of hope,
and the fervor of Charity.” This is a quote
from Pope Francis. You will find daily
reflections from me and other spiritual
content for you during this time. We are
also recording and uploading Sunday
Masses. Please remember that as a parish
we need your donations as well. Please
consider giving through online giving
https://www.stjoemanchester.org/online-
giving, by mail, or by dropping your
envelope off at the parish.
6. Parish Council
It is time for St. Joseph to have new
members added to the Parish Council.
When I first became pastor, I was told by
“experts” in the field of lay ministry that
the new way of organizing a Parish
Council was to have twelve people serve
simultaneous three-year terms. After three
years of being at St. Joseph, I do not think
it is in the parish’s or my best interest to
have a complete change of members on the
Parish Council at this time. Instead I am
going to ask four of the twelve to remain
for one more year, and then I will choose
(by drawing names out of a hat) four new
people for a two-year term and four more
for a three-year term. Therefore, the new
Parish Council will consist of four
returning members, four new members
with two-year terms and four new
members with three-year terms. The role
of the Parish Council is to form with the
pastor a small faith community where the
pastor can share his ideas about the future
of the parish and where he feels
comfortable enough with the Parish
Council to allow them to challenge him. If
you are interested or would like more
information please email me at
7. Catholic Charities
a. Catholic Charities is asking for
donations of bottled water, hand sanitizer,
sanitizing wipes, face masks, and
disposable gloves. If you would like to
donate them please bring them up to
Church and place them in the cry room
with a label marking them for Catholic
Charities. I will make sure that they get
delivered.
b. Cardinal Ritter Senior Services is in
need of additional employees to care for
senior adults at its Shrewsbury Campus.
See cardinalritterseniorservices.org/about-
crss/employment-opportunities/online-
application.
8. Revive
FYI...During this time of social distancing
members of the ministry team are taking
online classes in order to improve our
ministry styles. We are doing this through
a program called Revive.
9. Shout Out
A shout out to our Stephen Ministers who
have started calling parishioners to check
in with them. If you would like to receive a
phone call from them please email me at
[email protected] and I will
forward your name and number to them. A
shout out also goes to our SVDP members
who are continuing to serve the poor in the
area.

Spiritual Ponderings
Growing Old Gracefully
Let us continue our reflections on “growing old gracefully” using Richard Johnson’s book: A New
Vision of Parish Ministry for Maturing Adults: How to Construct, Organize, and Sustain a Vibrant Faith
Formation Program for the Second Half of Life. Richard Johnson lays out 12 principals for developing
a parish ministry geared towards older adults. Quotes from this book will be in bold. My
reflections will be in the normal font.
Principal #4 Parish ministry for maturing adults is based on the idea that God is calling
each maturing adult in the parish to a profound vocation.
Personal Goal #4: I will realize that I will always play an important part of God’s plan and I
have an obligation to God, others, and myself to always be the best version of myself as
possible.
Specialized vocations give new meaning to life. Many maturing adults feel a sense of
meaninglessness because they’ve lost sight of their purpose. At every age and every stage,
we are continuously in the throes of deconstructing previous meaning systems and
constructing new meaning systems in our innermost personality functions. Spiritually
maturing adults need guidance, instruction, and dialogue with others on deeper spiritual
levels so they can construct the most authentic and enriching life meaning possible. A fully
vibrant ministry to maturing adults can remind them of who they really are and hold up
their inherent value in a new light.
As I was reading this section of the book, my mind began to reflect on my child and teen years
when so many older adults in my home parish helped me grow closer to Christ. My
grandmother’s fishing buddies (a group of fellow parishioners who were friends of my
grandmother and went fishing together quite often) inspired me in many ways. They became
people I looked up to and wanted to be like. I could see faith was important to them; therefore,
I made an effort to make faith important to me. They were people who devoted a lot of their
time to helping others and so I wanted to be someone who helped others. In my mother, I have
seen a woman who has found new life moving from parent to grandparent. If we are alive then
we are still part of God’s plan and He still wants us to play an active role in the world today. As
we grow older, we should realize that we are role models for future generations. Do they find us
to be good role models? We should also ask ourselves who we could be a mentor to.
Principal #5 Parish ministry for maturing adults shifts the focus of parish activity to a
broad understanding of ministry at every level of mature adulthood: shared activities as
well as shared growth in faith and life.
Personal Goal #5: I will make sure that I remain an active member of my faith community.
Faith formation is the process of passing the leadership of the total psycho-spiritual
personality from our worldly self to our true and holy self. The faith formation process is
not age or time-limited, rather it is driven by our very life course, our manifold life
experience. It is the events, the full measure of our lives that offers us the spiritual
curriculum we need to gradually let go of what is non-essential, and steadily turn toward
the truth that sets us free. This is as true for older people as for everyone else in the parish.
I love the image in the above quote about transferring our personality from our worldly self to
our true and holy self. This is a task that I do not imagine completing on this side of the grave
and so it is something I pray for the grace from God to keep working on each and every day of
life.
Sometimes in life we have to make a choice to allow others to help us so that we can remain
active members of the parish. Letting someone give you a ride to Church or carry something for
you is not the end of the world. I hate hearing people say, “I don’t want to be a burden to
anyone” because this is a clear sign that someone is letting their ego get in the way. It is all right
to ask for help.
Principal #6 Parish ministry for maturing adults explicitly welcomes maturing adults into
mainstream ministries of the parish.
Personal Goal #6: I will strive to be a welcoming person who points out the positive things
going on in the parish and the wider Church.
Parish ministry is marked by hospitality, which means that we must be welcoming in all
aspects of parish life and experience: social, physical, psychological, and spiritual. Our
ministry to maturing adults is also marked by hospitality, which means that we must have
social events where spiritual maturing adults are encourage to mingle, mix, and have fun.
It is important for us to never forget the power of a personal invitation so as we grow older, let
us never forget that we should always be inviting people to join us at Church especially Mass
but also other Church social activities.
Stephen Ministry Why Stephen
Ministry? We have many needs for care
in our congregation and community:
people experiencing divorce, grief,
illness, unemployment, relocation,
hospitalization, loneliness and many
other stresses or challenges. Often
people with needs suffer silently or do
not request or receive the level of care
they really need. Our ministry
expands the care St. Joseph Parish can
offer by equipping and organizing
members to provide Christian care.
This gives us a larger pool of people
with gifts, skills, and calling to bring
Christ’s love and care to those who
most need it. For more information
about this ministry callAnne Grant,

Just for Kids
Sharing the Gospel Mary Magdalene was surprised when she found the empty tomb of Jesus. She ran and told Peter and John that
his body was gone. Peter and John ran to the tomb. They found no body, just strips of cloth. One piece was the cloth that covered the
face of Jesus. Peter and John knew that Jesus was not in the grave, even though they did not understand what it meant to rise from
the dead.
Prayer Jesus, you died and rose from the dead so I can share your life on earth and in heaven. Thank you.
Something to Draw Draw Mary, Peter, and John looking inside the empty tomb.
Mission for the Week I will tell someone that Jesus is alive.
