- General appearance : tidy photogenic. Avoid excesses of appearance especially in filmed matches.

- Clean uniform, consistent among wearers.

- White socks, compulsory to wear.

- Shoes : predominately white.

- Hat : aligned well on head, consistent among wearers, optional to wear.

- Glasses : optional to wear.

- Jewellery : clearly visible jewellery in most cases not allowed.

- ID cards must be hidden from sight, wear under shirt.

- Hair : clean, tidy well presented in nature, avoiding excess in style, colour, etc…

- Professional signalling

- Avoid confrontational situations with other persons espacially the players.



- The work of the Scorer is very important. They must work closely with the SECOND REFEREE, and if for some reason the scorer is not ready to commence, they must make sure, the SECOND REFEREE is immediately informed of this. The SECOND REFEREE should not allow play to start until the scorer has finished their work.

- The scorer should inform the SECOND REFEREE if they need signatures or any other information for the scoresheet that has not yet been specially provided.

- Scorer and assistant scorer are expected to be near the playing court at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the match.

- Alcohol test : in case being selected, the scorer/assistant scorer must be present at the alcohol test room, in uniform, 45 minutes before the match start time.

- The scoresheet : check that all details as listed on the scoresheet match the actual situation. If the scoresheet is incorrect, request a new scoresheet.

- The teams compared to the scoresheet : check that the player’s names, numbers, colour of uniforms, etc…, match as listed on the scoresheet and tournament schedule.

Before the match, the Scorer must check :

- The equipment : check that all equipment is present prior to the match. An extra filled in scoresheet, and an extra blanc scoresheet should always be present.

- After the coin toss, the SECOND REFEREE must pass all relevant information to the SCORER.The same applies in case the SECOND REFEREE is required to conduct the toss between sets 2 and 3 (Rule 23.2.9).

After the coin toss :

- The scoresheet : immediately after the completion of the match and before the captain’s sign, quickly check that all details are correct, and complete the Results section ASAP.

After the match, the Scorer must check :



- The ASSISTANT SCORER must be of the same competence as the SCORER and work in close coordination with him/her. If for some reason the scorer is unable to continue working he/she will take over the respective functions.

Assistant Scorer

The Assistant Scorer is responsible for the following duties :

- operates the manual scoreboard on the scorer’s table, checking that all scoreboards at the court show the correct results to the audience and, if not, corrects it.

- operates the number paddles 1 and 2 for indicating the correct server in coordination with the scorer. He/she must every time follow the verbal information received from the scorer. He/she should continue to hold the paddle up until the service takes place. It is of good technique that the assistant scorer follows an individual control sheet that he/she every times checks against the information received from the scorer.

- starts and ends the timing of the Technical Time Outs with the use of the buzzer/bell, in case applicable. He/she can be replaced by the SECOND REFEREE in this action if no buzzer/bell available.

Before the match, the Assistant Scorer must check :

- The teams compared to scoresheet and scoreboards : check that player’s names, numbers, colour of uniforms, etc…, at the scoreboards match those as displayed by the players and as listed on the scoresheet and tournament schedule.

- The equipment : assist the scorer checking that all equipment is present prior to the match.

After the match, the Assistant Scorer must check :

- The equipment : check that all equipment is collected after the end of the match.



General principle

- Before a set being initiated; after a TO or a TTO; after an exceptional game interruption; and anytime they have requested extra time to complete their work, the SCORER should raise both hands and inform his/her readiness, which will be then communicated by the SECOND REFEREE to the FIRST REFEREE by the use of the same signal.

- a team has exhausted their first and only “Formal Warning” in the match

- a given player has been sanctioned already once, or twice, for “Rude conduct” in that same set

- a “Delay warning” has been already issued to that team in the match.

- a given player has been sanctioned already once for “Offensive conduct” in that same match.

With the Assistant Scorer

- Check at all times correct score is shown on table manual scoreboard.

If any information is required

- Indicate clearly to the officials any points of clarification that are required before play can commence (signalling).- Play should not begin until this has been completed.

- Check at all times paddles #1 and #2 are being correctly used.

If the wrong server is about to serve

- Clearly indicate to the SECOND REFEREE that the incorrect person is about to serve or moving towards the service position.- Check that the correct # paddle is showing and check with scorer that scoresheet is correct. This can be corrected verbally.

After wrong server (service order fault)

- Use buzzer to indicate wrong server, indicate correct server and check with scorer that scoresheet is correct.

After wrong server (error by scorer/assistant scorer)

- Use buzzer to indicate desire to stop play. Communicate problem to 2nd referee.

- Correct service order should be enforced. New service made.

- The 2nd referee verifies this with the scorer.

- Verbally notify the SECOND REFEREE and players.

- Penalty of loss of rally can be applied.



If the scoreboard(s) do not match the scoresheet

- Play should not commence until the scoreboard(s) matches the official scoresheet.

- The assistant scorer must always monitor this situation.

Signal technical timeout

- In case applicable, clearly, signal with the buzzer to the players and referees that a technical timeout is starting and finishing.

- This matter should be pointed out to the SECOND REFEREE .

- The timing of the TTO commences from the time of the buzzer signal.

- Correct by one’s self if possible.

- The scoreboard operator(s) should ASAP correct this.



Delays in recording information

- The scorer must record information on the scoresheet as quickly and efficiently as possible.- Don’t let referees commence play until you are ready.

- Pool play system also places a lot of pressure on scorers to complete their recordings of final results at the scoresheet, as one single added or subtracted point at a given match in the pool will have an effect on the points ratio which can change the standings of the teams in the pool jeopardizing their chances to qualify for the next round of the tournament.

- Rally Point Scoring places a lot of pressure on scorers to complete their recording of each rally and resultant points. If for any reason the scorer falls behind in their scoring they should immediately inform the referees.

- Scorers must very carefully check all relevant boxes/sections of the scoresheet (e.g.: service order boxes; team points row) while filling out the Results box.



Referee incorrectly applies sanctions (e.g. :2 yellow cards same team)

- Scorer must immediately draw this to the attention of the officials.

Request in excess of allowable # of timeouts


Health or illness problems


- The assistant scorer must be ready to score at any time.
