dallas community aquatics centerSemester: Fall 2011Site: Maple Park in Dallas, TxProgram: Aquatics CenterSize: 10,000 sqft
Project Description: The community of Maple Park is a highly occupied pedestrian zone. The aquatics center will house a dive platform, lap pool, outdoor sprayground, as well as an extension to the park. Some of the problems addressed were visibilty of activity within, claiming public space, and protecting people from Texas sun.
Solution: The design impliments a plaza that hovers above the street. Gentle slopes extend the street up to the plaza to make a seamless new datum. This datum wraps the interior spaces to unite the public and private realms. The roof’s slope is calibrated to provide summer shade, and winter sun. These slopes made of heavy concrete, make a growing landscape that emerges to the street to show-case activity within, and gently receeds back into the earth forming the park.
6
The existing bus stops are highly used. One of the stops has a pavilion that provides shade. This pavilion has become the central hub of the community, and the most important meeting space.
Maple Ave is by far the most influential element on the site. It is a slow, but high, traffic street that connects the newest medical district of Dallas to this residential neighborhood.
The existing park is hardly ever used or maintained. Aside from the pavilion this park is vacant. The aquat-ics center will extend the park over the street, and pro-vide programming for the area.
There are many small “mom and pop” shops in the area that vitalize the mainly Hispanic and African American culture. These small town feel accounts for the scale of the project.
Single family homes line the edge of the park. These homes are the primary source of activity in the area, and had to respected in the design.

ut arlington conferencehotelSemester: Spring 2012Site: College Green, UTA CampusProgram: 300 Room Conference HotelSize: 300,000 sqft
Project Description: Due to the great expansion of UT Arlington’s enrollment, there has been an explosion of growth in facilities. Directly adjacent to the site is the new College Green park, and the 8,000 seat arena. These developments have made the site of an old dormitory the ideal environment for the conference hotel. This 300 room conference center will be an outreach to the educational community, and visitors of UTA. Some key concerns were of scale, utilization of the park, and establishing a landmark for the campus.
Solution: Since the program is mainly for visitors, there is a disconnect between the program and the students. To make this building a part of their environment all program was buried or floated above the public realm. This public surface is then sheltered by the hovering room stacks, sculpted by the ceilings of the program below, and serviced by a public cafe. The space that results is serviced by the program, but completely separated from its intrusion on the campus.

Semester: Spring ‘11Site: St. Elizabeth’s Mental HospitalProgram: Architecture BldgSite Size: 30 acresBuilding Size: 120,000 Sqft
Project Description: The University of Texas is adding a sister campus in Washington D.C. The site is the abandoned campus of St. Elizabeth’s Mental Hospital. The site has the best view of D.C. anywhere. I designed the campus master plan and the architecture building. The challenge was dealing with the intense topography, maintaining the view of D.C., and providing building types that encourage cross-pollination of disciplines.
Solution: To achieve and enhance the cross pollination of disciplines, the buildings are paired and slide away from each other to form courts and roof-top plazas. The “snake-like” form is implimented to maintain a lawn for the campus, and to allow the buildings to individually grow from the earth to achieve the “million dollar view” of the capitol.

Project Description: The Heart of Arlington Neighborhood Association, or HANA, called the Design Center with a vision of re-developing a pivotal block in their neighborhood into a mixed-use commercial and residential center. Some of their concerns were lack of a grocery in walking distance, crime rates in the current area, and increasing the pedestrian presence.
Solution: We divided the site into four land-uses. These uses form a density gradient from the intersection back into the neighborhood. At the intersection is the commercial sector; adjacent is student housing; touching the neighborhoods are town homes, and finally senior housing. A strategy of street walls and pedestrian corridors connect the districts into a walk able realm.

cinemacastelvecchiofilm institute
Semester: Study Abroad StudioSite: Plaza adjacent to CastelvecchioProgram: Theater and Film SchoolBuilding Size: 30,000 sqft.
Project Description: This project was a product of a study abroad in which I did a tour of Italy. During these travels I picked a site in which to develop a theater and film institute. I chose a public plaza adjacent to an architectural wonder...Castelvecchio. This site was chosen for its view of the river, existing public activity, and adjacency to Castelvecchio.
Solution: By lifting the theater off the ground floor, I was able to make a continuous shaded plaza that connects the river to the urban environment. This idea also allowed for the current bus stop and plaza to be preserved as an important asset to the community. The major idea was to not occupy the public realm, but enhance it by connection to the river. The design also utilizes an operable film screen and outdoor amphitheater to play films for the public at night.
