    JointVision2017

    TheJointVision2017projectbeganasthecreationofthenewstrategicplanforASUN.

    AswebegantoresearchvariousissuesfacingtheAssociatedStudentsinMarchandApril2009,

    itbecameclearthatthescopeoftheprojectwasbecomingfarlargerthanweeveranticipated.In

    July2009,ourresearcheffortsintobestpracticesfromUniversitiesacrosstheUnitedStatesand

    highereducationadministrationtheoryreachedcompletion.Wethenbegantoconsolidatethe

    voluminousdataintoacoherentsetofbestpracticesthatmostaptlyapplytotheUniversityof

    Nevada.Anothercomponentofourresearchwastoexaminethecurrentprogramsandpractices

    atourUniversitytoidentifywhichareascouldbereinforcedorimprovedupon.

    OurgoalintheprojectistocraftastudentvisionfortheUniversityofNevadain2017.

    Wehaveattemptedtokeepourrecommendationsasgeneralaspossibleanditiscriticalto

    pointoutthattheUniversityhasalreadymadeheadwayinmanyofthefollowingrecommenda

    tions.Theintentofthisdocumentisnottopointfingersorcriticizedifferentelementsofthe

    University.Thefirststepinmakingprogressinanyfieldofhumanendeavorisasenseofbrutal

    honestyandwillingnesstoacceptconstructivefeedback.JointVisionisdesignedtoprovidea

    vehiclefordiscussionaboutourfutureasaninstitutionintermsofdirection,structure,philoso

    phy,andefficiency.Wemustconsolidateoureffortsandclearlydelineateourinstitutionalpri

    oritiestoourfaculty,staff,students,community,andcitizens.

    Asstatedearlier,thisdocumentisnotacriticismofourcurrentpractices.Wemerely

    hopethattheUniversitycommunitywillviewourJointVisionasaprimerfortheinstitutional

    evolutiontothegreatUniversitywehaveallstriventobuild.AttheUniversityofNevada,we

    haveincrediblytalentedanddedicatedfacultyandstaffwhosecollectiveworkforgestheexcel

    lencethatourinstitutionhasandwillbeknownfor.Overthepastyear,wehavetrulycometo

    the

    student

    experience

    at

    the

    University

    of

    Nevada

    is

    one

    of

    the

    most

    com

    prehensiveandfulfillingofanyinstitutionintheUnitedStates.Fromtheinstantanewstudentlights

    theircandleandrecitestheNevadaOathattheNewStudentOpeningCeremonytowhentheywalk

    acrossthestageatcommencement,studentsattheUniversityofNevadaareprovidedanexpansive

    rangeofopportunitiesintherealmsofacademics,traditionsandstudentlife.TheUniversityhasa

    succinctandwidelyacceptedmissionstatementwhosecommonprinciplesareusedasafoundation

    fordecisionmaking;promptingfacultyandadministratorstoask,Doesthisdecisionhelpuscarry

    outourmission?Allstaffoncampus,regardlessoftheirposition,iscommittedtooneeminentphi

    losophy:ourbusinessisstudentsuccess.ThroughourutilizationoftheFullSpectrumEngagement

    model,wehavemadegreatadvancesintheareasofacademicengagement,retentionandgraduation

    student

    OurstudentsattheUniversityofNevadaareheldtohighacademicstandards,challenging

    studentstoreachbeyondtheirperceivedcapabilitieswhileprovidingarangeofsupportservicesfor

    thosewhorequireenhancedassistance.TheAcademicSuccessCenterhousesallsupplementalin

    structionandtutoringeffortswhocatertostudentswhoareeitherunderpreparedbythepublic

    schoolsystemorarehavingdifficultysucceedingintherealmofaneverevolvingUniversitycurricu

    lum.Throughourimprovedearlyalertsystems,widelyexpandedadvisingcapabilities,anduniver

    sallyimplementedfirstyearinitiatives,wearereachingouttostudentsinwaysneverbeforepossi

    ble.TheOfficeofUndergraduateResearchfundshundredsofthousandsofdollarsannuallytopro

    students

    the

    opportunity

    pursue

    research

    initiatives

    which

    are

    presented

    at

    the

    researchsymposiumeachAprilasacelebrationoftheacademicachievementsofourstudents.

    OneofthehallmarksofstudentstimeattheUniversityofNevadaisthescopeofopportuni

    tiesofferedtoourstudents.OurStudentActivitiesCenterisadynamicorganizationcommittedto

    providingstudentsalaboratorytoexperimentwithandrefinethelessonstheylearnedintheclass

    room.Ourcocurricularexperiencecapitalizesonthemutualunderstandingandreliancebetween

    ourstudentservicesandacademicapparatuses.Weprovidestudentsthetoolstoblazetheirowntrail

    throughtheirUniversityexperiencewithnotwostudentspursuingexactlythesamesetsofshared

    experiences.

    FacultyattheUniversityofNevadaarecontinuallyexposedtonewandinnovativeformsof

    pedagogyandstudentdevelopmenttheorytoteachaseffectivelyaspossibletoagenerationwho

    neverknewwhatlifewaslikewithouttheadventoftheinternet,cellphonesormoderncomputing

    devices. AmajorfactorinanynewfacultyhireistheirabilitytobelieveinandexecutetheUniver

    sitymissionandcommonprinciples.Ournewhiresarepredominatelyfulltimetenuretrackfaculty

    whopossessnotonlyapassionfortheirrespectivefields,butalsoforstudentsuccessandinstitu

    tionalimprovement;theyarecommittedtolifelonglearning.

    Organizationally,weasaninstitutionofhigherlearningmuststriveto

    achievewhatwehavetermedjointness.AsweexecutethedriversintheFSE

    modelandprogresstowardsfullspectrumengagement,wewillconcurrentlybe

    makingstridestowardsjointness.Inthejointnessmodel,weidentifiedthetwoor

    ganizationalunits

    of

    the

    University

    and

    the

    type

    of

    learning

    they

    are

    typically

    asso

    ciatedwith:academicswithcognitivedevelopmentandstudentserviceswithpsy

    chosocialdevelopment.

    First,wemustassessthesedifferingareastoeliminateanyrepeatedorinef

    ficientservices.Asweexecutethedriversoffullspectrumengagement,wewillbe

    gintostitchtogetherallfourareastofosterbettercooperationbetweenthestu

    dentservicesandacademicunits.Onceafoundationofextensivemutualcoopera

    tionhasbeenlaid,wewillbeabletofullyintegratethecapabilitiesofallcampus

    entities.Oncethisisachieved,wewillthenbeabletoembarkonnewinnovative

    collaborationstobestservethestudents.Whenweachievetruejointness,wewill

    erhapsoneofthemostdifficultaspectsofanychangetoaninstitution

    istheevolutioninitsculture.ThecultureattheUniversityofNevadais

    onethatiswellestablishedandwithslightalterationstoourexisting

    practices,wecangreatlyaffectourabilitytoengagethecampuscommunity.In

    thefollowingsection,wediscusshowourcampusculturecanevolvetobemore

    engagingandwelcomingtoourstudents.Byhavingourstudentstrulyconnect

    withandappreciatethevalueofthecultureoftheinstitution,theyaregiven

    moreofareasontoremainoncampus,takeprideintheirUniversityandcompre

    hendwhatitmeanstobeamemberoftheNevadaWolfPack.

    Themissionestablishesthetoneofacollegeandconveysitseducationalpurposes,whether

    basedonreligious,ideological,oreducationalbeliefs,givingdirectiontoallaspectsofinsti

    tutional

    life,

    including

    the

    policies

    and

    practices

    that

    foster

    Thoughabitlengthy,themissionstatementandvaluesoftheUniversity

    OurmissionandUniversityvaluescouldbecondensedtoprovidealessambigu

    ousrepresentationofwhatwe,asaninstitution,standfor.Byshorteningthese

    conceptsandmakingthemeasiertoarticu

    purpose.Individualsshouldbeaskingthem

    ourstudentsandcommunity.Theimportance

    ofthispointcannotbeunderstated;thisisthe

    startingpointforevolvingthecampusculture.Withaclearlyarticulatedmission

    set

    of

    core

    values,

    many

    issues

    will

    become

    much

    easier

    to

    solve.

    It

    will

    be

    comemucheasiertobeginaligningourstudentservicesandacademicinitiatives

    alongwithpromotingagreatersenseofUniversitycommunity.

    Ifwestartedbysimplyidentifyingfivebulletpointswhichrepresentwhat

    westandforasaninstitution(academicexcellence,etc.)wecanbeginincorpo

    ratingthosevaluesintothecurriculumandreinforcingthemthroughoutastu

    dentsexperienceattheUniversity.Wecanalsoplayonexistingtraditionsand

    capitalizeontheiringrainedsignificancewhichencompassesourinstitutional

    principles:studentsshouldalwaysknowthatthestrengthofthepackisthewolf,

    andthe

    strength

    of

    the

    wolf

    is

    the

    pack.

    Students,

    faculty,

    and

    staff

    are

    the

    strengthofthepack.

    Ritualsandtraditionscanbondstudentstooneanotherandtothe

    institution.Feelingsofbelonginghelpstudentsconnectwiththeir

    peersandinstitution.StudentSuccessinCollegeGeorgeKuh

    Sharedexperiencesarethebondthattiesstudentstoaninstitutionof

    higherlearning.StudentsattheUniversityofNevadashouldunderstandthat

    theyareapartofalegacythatstretchesbackto1864.Ourcommonprinciples

    andUniversitymissionshouldbereinforcedbythetraditionsthatourstudents

    participatein.AsaUniversity,wemuststrivetoalignourvaluesandtraditions

    aswellasreinforcethemthroughthestudentexperienceoncampus.Activities

    likepaintingtheN,theMackayoffering,NewStudentOpeningceremoniesand

    HomecomingWeekhave

    reachedalevelofconsistency

    whichhasassertedthemashall

    marksofthestudentexperience.

    monythenightbeforecommencement.Smallgesturessuchasthiscangofar

    graduationfurtherfosteringacultureofcompletion.Traditionssurrounding

    athleticprogramsarealsosomewhatlacking.TherecitationofTheLawofthe

    Junglebeforeeachbasketballgameisanexcellenttraditionwhichcanbeim

    provedonsimplybyidentifyingmethodstoexpressthemeaningbehindit.The

    the

    tradition

    is

    reinforced

    truly

    communicated.

    Intheend,everycampusissimplyacollectionoffacilities,encasedwithinsomanysheds

    thatarearrangedinfunctionalproximitytooneanother.Butthereisalsoaninvisiblecam

    hierarchy

    associations

    and

    sentiments,

    which

    in

    their

    totality

    form

    a

    living

    enabledprogrammingentitiesaroundcam

    Centerhavegivenstudentstheopportunity

    tousetechnologytosolveamultitudeof

    challengesbothinandoutoftheclassroom.

    Dataindicatesthattheuseofthesefacilities

    istremendous;aoneweeksurveyoftrafficintheKnowledgeCentershowedthatbe

    tweenMondayandThursday,anaverageof7,000studentsperdayweretakingadvan

    tageofthebuilding.

    Thearea

    known

    as

    mid

    campus

    consists

    of

    the

    grouping

    of

    the

    Knowledge

    Cen

    ter,LombardiRecreationCenter,andtheJoeCrowleyStudentUnion.Fewothercam

    pusesareabletotakeadvantageofthemainstudentlifefacilitiesbeinginsuchclose

    proximity.Effortsmustbemadetopromotecooperationandcomplementationofthe

    serviceseachofthesevastlydifferentfacilitiesoffer;anexcellentexampleofjointness.

    FromMondayThursday,thereisnoplaceoncampustostudypastmidnight.Many

    studentshavestatedthattheydonotstudyordohomeworkoncampuslateratnight

    becausetheyknowthattheirtimethereisverylimited.Inordertoprovideanopti

    mumworkenvironment,thesefacilitiesmustbeaccessibletostudents24hoursaday.

    Byhaving24houraccesstothesebuildings,astudentonanygivennight,canbestudy

    ingforanexam,takeabreakandplaysometabletennisatLombardi,orplayaboard

    gamewithfriendsattheJoe.Thesetypesofoptionscouldtrulyfosteranacademically

    enrichingandvibrantstudentlifeoncampusatallhoursofthedayornight.

    Physicalfitnessisnotonlyoneofthemostimportantkeystoa

    healthybody,itisthebasisofcreativeanddynamicintellectual

    Oneofourprimarygoalsinthisdocumentistoprovidestudentswithrea

    sonstoutilizeservicesoncampusthattheycouldalsoobtainelsewhere.Our

    campusprovidesexceptionalrecreationalactivitiesforourstudentsatlowcost.

    Builtin1975,theLombardiRecreationCenterwasoriginallydesignedtoservea

    campuspopulationroughly1/3ourpresentsize.Throughrenovationsoverthe

    pastseveraldecades,thefacilityhasevolvedtoattempttomeetthegrowingde

    mandandscopeofthefacilitysuse.Inordertomeetanyfutureneed,afar

    reachingrenovationofthefacilityisnecessary.TheLombardiRecreationfacility

    wasoriginallyintendedtoprovideasimplevenueforstudentstoexerciseand

    hasevolvedtoincorporatemanyotherfacetsofrecreationandwellness:nutri

    tion,dropinclasses,andnewformsofphysiologicalimprovement.Thisproject

    shouldbethetargetofourfundraisingeffortsinthefuture.

    institutionsinthecountryandbecauseofthis,ourabilitytoreachouttoandpro

    videsupportforstudentshasbeenlimited.Asstatedearlier,ourfacultyandstaff

    havefoughtvaliantlyintryingtodothebestwiththeresourcestheyareallo

    cated.Withamoreappropriateleveloffundingandamorejointatmosphereon

    campus,thepossibilitiesforcreatingexceptionalprogramsaregreatlyenhanced.

    in

    vadacanmakestridestowardstruefullspectrumengagementandajointlyop

    eratinginstitution.ItallbeginswitharedefinitionoftheUniversitymissionand
