R ev 7:9-10 After this I looked and there

before me was a great multitude that noone could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standingbefore the throne and in front of theLamb. They were wearing white robesand were holding palm branches in their hands. (10) And they cried out in a loud

voice: "Salvation belongs to our God,who sits on the throne, and to theLamb."

2T imothy 3:1-5 B ut mark this: There will be terribletimes in the last days. (2) People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, (3)without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-

control, brutal, not lovers of the good, (4)treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-- (5) having a form of godlinessbut denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.

T hree fundamental principles or evidences toguide His disciples in their service:

O thers are willing to follow Christ--on a short-term basis.

    a. However, there is no such thing in the NewTestament as short-term discipleship.

    b. The location in which our discipleship isexercised may be for only a short-term, but total

commitment is involved.c. The short-term disciple does not burn his bridgesbehind him, or bury his boat as Columba did.

    d. He never ventures as far as the point of noreturn.

    e. A young man said to O swald Sanders, I think I willtake a trip to Asia and look around and try it out. If I feelcomfortable about it, I might possibly return as amissionary. B ut in giving His Great Commission the Lorddid not make the comfort of the messenger a decidingfactor. O ne whose commitment was so wavering would

be no asset to the missionary force.

B . Continuance in Christs Word is notautomatic; it is the result of strong purpose and

self-discipline.a. It demands taking time, not only to read theScriptures but to meditate on them, turning themover in the mind in the same way the cow chews thecud.b. It will include memorizationhiding HisWord in our hearts.c. mixed with faith. Without faith, our reading willbring little spiritual profit.

    d. O f the Hebrew Christians it was said, The messagethey heard was of no value to them, because those who

heard did not combine it with faith. (Hebrews 4:2).

John 13:34-35 A new command I giveyou: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

John 21:15-17 When they had finished eating,

Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John,do you truly love me more than these?" "Yes,Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesussaid, "Feed my lambs." (16) Again Jesus said,"Simon son of John, do you truly love me?" Heanswered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep." (17) Thethird time he said to him, "Simon son of John, doyou love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesusasked him the third time, "Do you love me?" 1. Those verses give the outward view of

discipleship and have to do with our relationswith our fellow men.2. As we have seen, a disciple of Christ isone who not only studies His teaching but

obeys His commands as well.3. Dislike and affection are alikeirrelevant .

    1. His was selflesslove.2. It was forgivinglove.3. It was

sacrificial love.4. The supreme evidence of discipleship, theauthentic badge, is genuine love for one another.

    5. O ne writer remarks that the lesson Jesustaught was not only for advanced scholars.

    3. This fruit is manifested in two areas.

    a. Fruit in Character (in the inward life)Gal. 5:22-23 The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,

peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

    b. Fruit in Service (in outwardministry)

O pen your eyes and look at the field! They areripe for harvest. Even now the reaper draws hiswages, even now he harvests the crop for eternallife, so that the sewer and reaper may be gladtogether. (John 4:35-36)

    4. The fruit bearing that is an authentic mark

of discipleship is not automatic butconditional.

I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat fallsinto the ground and dies, it remains only a singleseed. B ut if it dies, it produces many seeds.(John 12:24)
