On Ash Wednesday, Pro-Life ActionMinistries turned 33. Since March 5,1981, our mission has been to directlyintervene for the lives of the mostdefenseless of our brothers and sisters.Along the way we have organized thenation’s largest prayer vigils at abortionfacilities and prophetically witnessed tothe humanity of the unborn throughprayer marches, rescues, and demonstra-tions. We successfully led a boycott toget a major corporation to cease its fund-ing of Planned Parenthood and organizedthe efforts which brought about the firstclosure of an abortuary in Minnesotabecause of pro-life work. We openedbranches in Central Florida and Duluth,Minn., and strengthened efforts in St.Cloud and Rochester, Minn.

During this year, we will very likelydocument our 3,000th baby saved fromabortion. We have been passing on ourknowledge to others through NationalSidewalk Counseling Symposiums andelsewhere. We continue to organize acomprehensive sidewalk counseling pro-gram, always looking to bring in newvolunteers, increase our effectivenessand save more lives. And there has beenso much more.

But the work before us remains for-midable. Unborn children continue to bekilled with too few Christians respond-ing.

In the words of one of our founders, the late Br. Michael Gaworski, “If we aretruly pro-life, if we’re truly Christian, and that you and I really, truly believethat what’s going on inside these abortionchambers is the killing of our unbornbrothers and sisters, then you and I aren’tgoing to let one calendar month go bywithout spending at least two hours at thescene of the crime. I don’t believe thatanyone is too busy or is doing something

so important or vital, that he or she can-not spend at least two hours a month tosave babies and to help women, at thevery least to mourn the deaths.”

We may have learned much through-out the years in how to approach the wo-men and what is more effective at savinglives, but nothing has changed over theseyears regarding the critical need to bethere, to be present, to pray, to offer help,to be a friend to those being led to death.

Not everyone is able to sidewalk coun-sel. But every single Christian can be awitness for life by taking time to pray ator near an abortuary, whether holding asign or not, speaking out or remainingsilent. Make a commitment for life. Areal commitment. Set a day, once amonth or once a week, to come out to

From the Executive Director, Brian Gibson . . .

pray and be a witness for Jesus by stand-ing up for the most defenseless.

Our 40 Days for Life campaigns haveproven that Christians can come out any-time day or night to pray and have anamazing impact. For those who workregular “business” hours, time beforegoing to work or right after work is avail-able. Saturdays and Sundays are perfectfor you as well. Commit to spending anhour in prayer where real living humanbeings are being put to death. Those whowork hours other than these are desper-ately needed to be there in prayer whenthe women are going in for their sched-uled death appointments. No sidewalkcounselor should ever be alone whileworking to save lives. And we shouldnever be short of sidewalk counselors.

Abortionist Working at Catholic Hospital in La Crosse

Anne Arvidson, daughter of Leif and Karen Arvidson, stands up for her babybrother, Peter (photo inset), and other precious children by picketing outside MayoClinic Health System-Franciscan Healthcare in La Crosse, Wis. Pro-lifers thereare asking the hospital to sever ties with Dr. Carl Rose, an OB-GYN who commitsabortions, and who had suggested the option of abortion to Karen when she waspregnant with Peter and a patient at the hospital.

by Debra Braun

Pro-lifers have been picketing theCatholic hospital in La Crosse, Wis.since March 5, asking that the hospitalsever ties with abortionist Carl Rose. Thehospital, Mayo Clinic Health System-Franciscan Healthcare, is co-owned bythe Franciscan Sisters of PerpetualAdoration (FSPA) and is part of theMayo Clinic, based in Rochester, Minn.Rose is an OB/GYN who sees pregnantwomen at the hospital in La Crosse andwho kills unborn children elsewhere, presumably at Mayo Clinic Hospital,Methodist Campus in Rochester, wherewe know abortions are being committed.(See "Pray for Carl Rose" on page 6.)

The pro-life efforts are headed up byLeif and Karen Arvidson, who have per-sonal experience with Rose. DuringKaren’s most recent pregnancy, she wasseen by Rose at the La Crosse hospital.Although the baby was perfectly healthyat the time, Rose suggested that he couldhave Down Syndrome and that theyshould discuss their options (i.e., abor-tion).

When Karen suffered a placentalabruption, Rose seemed to have no con-cern for the life of the child, according tothe Arvidsons. The baby experiencedgreat distress, but Rose neglected to pro-vide help. In order to find out why hewas so calloused, Karen called his officein Rochester. An office worker informedher that Rose commits abortions for anyreason up to about 21 weeks. Since thestory went public, several other womenhave come forward with stories of simi-lar experiences with Rose. Some of theirstories are posted on a new website thatwas established to raise awareness of theissue — www.exposemayo.com.

The baby, Peter, now 18 months old,had some medical challenges after birth.By the grace of God, through the ferventprayers of many supporters, he is nowdoing well, with some developmentaldelays, said Leif.

The Arvidsons have asked the FSPASisters and hospital administrators tosever ties with the abortionist, but theydecided to continue to have him meetwith pregnant women. They said thatthey are morally obliged to provide abor-tion as an option. Yet, in May 2011,

hospital CEO Dr. Timothy Johnson hadsaid, "We are committed to maintainingour Catholic identity. It is a very big partof who we are."

“It is unacceptable that Franciscanbrings in an abortionist to work withpregnant women, unbeknownst to them,”the Arvidsons said in a statement. “It isgravely wrong for a Catholic hospital torefer patients out to abortion clinics. Butthis is worse – they are bringing the abor-tionist into their hospital to meet withpregnant women.”

The Arvidsons added that they arepicketing outside of the hospital so thatother women will know that an abortion-ist works in the OB/GYN department.“Pregnant women have the right to knowif an abortionist is assigned to care forthem,” they said.

More people are needed to hold pro-life and informational signs outside thehospital. Go to www.exposemayo.com tosee how you can get involved and to keepupdated on this situation.

Pray that the U.S. Supreme Courtwould rule with wisdom and justice incurrent cases involving abortion and reli-gious freedom. By the time you receivethis newsletter, the Court will have heardoral arguments in cases involving theDepartment of Health and Human Ser-vices (HHS) mandate in Obamacare. Thismandate requires most health plans tocover “preventive services for women,”including drugs and procedures thatmany citizens find objectionable formoral and religious reasons. These ob-jectionable items include abortion-induc-ing drugs, sterilization, and birth control, and “education and counseling” to pro-mote these to all “women of reproductivecapacity,” including minor girls. Sebel-ius v. Hobby Lobby and Conestoga WoodSpecialties v. Sebelius are the first twocases involving the mandate (out of morethan 90) to reach the high court. Oralarguments were scheduled for March 25.

The other current case which weshould pray about is McCullen v. Coakleywhich involves a 2007 Massachusetts law

Minnesota Supreme Court Strikes Pro-Life LawAgainst ‘Advising, Encouraging’ Suicide(From a March 19, 2014 press release by Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life)

The Minnesota Supreme Court has overturned the state’s longstanding prohibition against encouraging and advising a person tocommit suicide. The 4-1 ruling is a significant setback in efforts to protect citizens from the danger and injustice of suicide andassisted suicide. Those most at risk are the elderly and persons with disabilities, whose lives are often the most devalued.

“Today’s ruling rolls back years of protections for vulnerable citizens who are not receiving the medical and mental health carethey need to live,” said Scott Fischbach, Executive Director of Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL). “Instead of guar-anteeing care for those with chronic pain or depression, for example, the Court has turned its back and said, ‘Let others urge themto commit suicide.’”

The Supreme Court ruling in State v. Melchert-Dinkel means that Minnesotans suffering from difficult physical or mental ill-nesses can be subjected to encouragement to commit suicide, including from those who may benefit financially from the death.

The Supreme Court overturned an appeals court ruling in the case of William Melchert-Dinkel, a Faribault ex-nurse who urgedtwo vulnerable people online to commit suicide by hanging. He gave them details about the length and diameter of rope, how to tiethe knot and where to place the noose on their necks. He also urged them to set up a webcam so he could watch them die; both com-mitted suicide.

Melchert-Dinkel was convicted in 2011 under Minnesota Statutes section 609.215, subdivision 1, which provides criminal penal-ties for anyone who “advises” or “encourages” suicide. MCCL was instrumental in the passage of this protective law in 1992.

The Supreme Court has not acted on a Minnesota Court of Appeals unpublished September ruling in the State v. Final Exit casethat said the law’s prohibition against advising and encouraging suicide was unconstitutional.

“MCCL will carefully consider the Court’s ruling that the current law’s wording lacks specificity,” Fischbach said. “We will lookat the possibility of clarifying the statute through legislation. People at risk of suicide need care and protection, not prodding andguidance on killing themselves.”

Pray for U.S. Supreme Court in Current Critical Casesto gag speech just because it doesn’treflect the government’s views or theviews of abortionists,” said ADF SeniorLegal Counsel Matt Bowman. “For thatreason, we are pleased that the anti-speech ordinance did not go into effect asscheduled, and we welcome the city’sattempt to reconsider it in the wake ofour lawsuit. We will monitor the citycouncil’s decisions as we continue ourfight to protect free speech for the peopleof Madison.”

that established restrictive, 35-foot “buf-fer zones” around the entrances of abor-tion mills in that state. Oral argumentswere heard in McCullen on January 15.The decision in this case could affectsidewalk counseling all over the country.

Some abortion advocates are not evenwaiting for the Supreme Court decisionin McCullen before trying to interferewith the free speech rights of pro-lifers.

In late February the city of Madison,Wis., passed an ordinance which impos-es “bubble zones” that are 320 feet indiameter and restrict free speech withinthem throughout the city. The bubblesexist around the entrances of every build-ing in Madison that happens to have alicensed physician’s office, clinic, or hos-pital inside. Within each bubble, no per-son may “approach” within eight feet ofanother person to leaflet, educate, displaya sign, protest, or counsel any passersby.

A lawsuit was immediately filedagainst the ordinance by Alliance De-fending Freedom (ADF). A week later, the city council decided to suspend thebubble zone for possible modification.

Babies SavedSecond baby:

Two young ladies pulled in with oneabortion-bound. They were offered infor-mation but went inside. After looking atthe information and sitting inside apacked waiting room with so many otherabortion-bound patients, they got up andwalked out. As they were driving out, counselors approached and asked theabortion-bound mom if she had changedher mind and she said yes! The counselorlooked at them and said, "My, how dif-ferent your faces are now. When youcame in this morning you had tears ofsorrow, but now you have tears of joy!"How fitting for the saving of this pre-cious baby! They were shown where togo for an ultrasound and other services!

Third baby:A young couple pulled in the driveway,

stopping to take literature that was offer-ed by sidewalk counselors and allowingthem to speak to them for a few minutes. They pulled into the parking lot and sat intheir car for quite a while. They finallygot out, but walked down to speak withsidewalk counselor Dan telling him that

After lookingat the material and talking, they just knewthey couldn't do it and wanted to keeptheir baby. They thanked Dan for every-one being out there. Thank you Lord!

Presence and Prayers Save a Life!* This report from Minneapolis is byDebra Braun, Education Director:

Saturday, March 1, was another verycold day outside Mildred Hanson's abor-tion center; the temperature was hover-ing around zero, there was a strong north-west wind and to make matters worse, thesky was overcast and gloomy. At least asunny sky would have taken the edge offthe bad weather conditions, I thought. But three sidewalk counselors came outto try to save lives, and the prayer groupled by Bob Loch was also there. Thisgroup has been very faithfully prayingoutside abortion centers twice a week forabout 20 years.

Carl Rose, 45, is a Mayo ClinicOB/GYN who practices in Rochester,Minn., La Crosse, Wis., and other citiesin the region. He sees patients with high-risk pregnancies, sometimes suggestingabortion as an option, and he will killunborn children for any reason up toabout 21 weeks (see page 3).

Please pray that Rose would stopcommitting abortions and use his skillsto help all his patients bring their chil-dren safely to birth, never again suggest-ing abortion as an option. And pray thathe would repent of his past involvementin abortion and become reconciled withGod.

Listing AbortionistsA hallmark of our ministry has been

confronting the evil of abortion with thelove of Christ. This approach has in-cluded publicly identifying who theabortionists (and pro-abortion leaders)are. The practice of placing the namesof abortionists in this newsletter has atwofold purpose: to ask for your heart-felt prayers for the conversion of thoselisted and to inform you so that you arenot patients of those committing abor-tions.

The criteria for placing someone onthe following list is that the individual is

Is Your Doctor Involved in Abortions?Does Your Doctor PrescribeAbortifacient Birth Control?

Ask your own doctor if he/she doesabortions or refers for them, or pre-scribes abortifacients such as the Pill,Ortho Evra (the “patch”), Depo-Provera(the “shot”), Nuva-Ring, the “morning-after pill,” implants, or the IUD. Allthese methods (and others) can causevery early abortions by thinning the lin-ing of the uterus so that if breakthroughovulation occurs (which it sometimesdoes) and a new life is conceived, theyoung human being may not be able toattach to the uterine lining and thereforehe or she dies. These methods can alsobe very dangerous, even deadly, to thewoman. If you would like to go to acompletely pro-life physician, we have alist of such doctors. Call (651) 771-1500.

A young couple took literature fromme as they drove in, but then an abortion"escort" interfered so we weren't able tohave much of a conversation. They park-ed near the building and walked in silent-ly as I continued to speak to them. About30 minutes later, the young man came outand sat in his car. All three of us sidewalkcounselors were momentarily preoccu-pied at the various entrance points asmore abortion clients arrived, but then Inoticed this young man move his carcloser to the front door of the building. Iasked him to please come over so that Icould give him some additional informa-tion. He came over to talk and told methat he had texted his girlfriend and she

was leaving! I asked if there was any-thing in particular that had changed theirminds, something in the literature? Hereplied, "The people praying. I told her Idon't want her to go to hell." I gave himmy business card, told him to call if theyneed anything and said, "God bless you!""And you too," he said. "Thank you allfor being here." The young woman sooncame out and they left. This incident wassuch a day-brightener, infinitely betterthan if the sun had been shining!

It also reminded me of an article byMsgr. Philip J. Reilly, founder of theHelpers of God’s Precious Infants, whoteaches sidewalk counseling around theworld. He wrote, "The most importantthing to happen outside of an abortionclinic is for people to be there in prayer. When a pregnant woman in difficulty

walk around the building seven times(see the biblical account of the originalJericho March in the book of Joshua, chapter 6).

Whole Woman's is the second largestabortion provider in Minnesota. Basedin Texas, Whole Woman's until recentlyowned seven abortion facilities—the onein Minneapolis at 825 S. 8th St., five inTexas, and one in Baltimore. However,in early March, it closed for good two ofits Texas abortion centers—in Beaumontand McAllen (which, in part, catered towomen from across the border inMexico)—because of regulations put inplace by the new Texas pro-life law. Aspokeswoman for Whole Woman’s com-plained that now “some women will notbe able to end their pregnancy.”

The chain has a checkered history inTexas with violations for expired operat-ing room equipment, disregard for steril-ization procedures and violation of the24-hour Women's Right to Know Act. Ithas also been cited by the Texas Com-mission on Environmental Quality forillegal dumping of infectious and haz-ardous waste along with patient records. If it has this track record in Texas, whatcan its clients in Minnesota expect?

Of equal concern is Whole Woman'sphilosophy about abortions. Recently at aforum at the University of MinnesotaMedical School, founder and CEO AmyHagstrom Miller did not dispute that theunborn are human but she believes thereproductive rights of the woman havepriority. Whole Woman's also takes a"holistic” approach, offering its abortionclients “specialty visits” — upgrades forprivate waiting areas and “healing herbaltea” . . . for a price.

By buying out two former abortionfacilities in downtown Minneapolis(Midwest and Meadowbrook) this abor-tion chain will undoubtedly become amore prominent player in the move to“normalize” abortion and make the prac-tice more acceptable. Even though WholeWoman's has less of a political presencethan Planned Parenthood, Minnesota'sleading abortion provider, it is as danger-ous to the unborn and as devastating towomen. Committing abortions up to 22weeks, this business is inherently evil and

needs fervent prayer, fasting and peacefulvigil in order to close.
