Dear Friends,Why is this night different from all other nights?”

(Passover Haggadah) One of my fondest memories of my mother-in-law, (may her memory be for a blessing), was that she could never simply answer a question. Every question brought another question

in response. I would ask, “Are you joining us for dinner?” She would answer, “Why shouldn’t I join you for dinner?” She had old European roots that saw the world in terms of questions. There is something authentically Jewish about always asking questions. The Talmud is filled with rabbis questioning one another. The rabbis of the Talmud would never agree with one another, but would constantly argue and raise ques-tions. Sometimes when I speak to people who choose to convert to Judaism, they tell me, “In my former religion you were not allowed to question. In Judaism everything can be questioned.” Judaism is a religion of questions. And nowhere is that idea of questions more obvious than at the Passover seder. Of course a key moment in the seder is the four questions, traditionally asked by the youngest child present. “Why is this night different from all other nights? On all other nights we eat bread or matza, on this night only matza. Etc.” Most people do not realize that these particular four questions are simply sample questions. The Talmud has a slightly different version of the four questions. I try to make my seder a kind of quiz game, a ritual meal built on the mindset of Jeopardy. Do we eat matza with bitter herbs or do we eat them separately? (An-swer – we do both.) Why do we pour a cup of wine for Elijah? (Answer – there are actually five terms in the Bible for redemption, but we are not certain if the fifth step has taken place yet. So we drink four cups of wine and leave the fifth cup without drinking it. Elijah comes to answer unanswered questions.) Why do we no longer eat a roasted lamb on Passover but simply put a shank bone on our seder plate? (Answer – we must be in a state of ritual purity to eat the Passover offer-ing, and nobody today is in such a state of ritual purity. For more details, google “Red Heffer”.) Why do we not say that the Wise son excludes himself from the community? After all, he also says, what do these mean “to you”? (Answer – I have no idea. Even rabbis have unanswered questions.) I love being a teacher in a religion where everything is open to questioning. People sometimes tell me, “Rabbi, I have a dumb question.” I always answer, “There are no dumb questions, only dumb answers.” Part of my job is to answer questions to the best of my ability. But there is a good chance that the rabbi up the street may give a different answer. Someday according to tradition, when Elijah comes back, he will answer all the questions. But until he comes, keep asking questions.

CANTOR'S MESSAGEBy Cantor Jonathan Angress Yahrzeit

Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word, which literally means “time of year” or memorial. Jews of Ashkenazi descent use this term. Sephardim call this commemoration nahala, in Ladino. This custom is widely observed and based on the Jewish tradition of commemorating the death of a relative. All the Yahrzeit rituals are deeply ingrained in Jewish life. The common rituals that are performed in the honorable memory of the departed soul include reciting the Kaddish prayer and lighting a Yahrzeit candle. Yahrzeit also includes the action of donating to charity in memory of a deceased loved one. Through the performance of the mitzvah of tzedakah in the name of the departed, the merit of the deed is shared with the soul of the late relative, as their memory is enhanced.

Dear Friends, This past month has been a whirlwind of musical adventures.

I had three different performances within the South Florida Jewish community back to back. First, I performed a teaser concert of Jewish Broadway during the Women’s League and Men’s Club Shabbaton here at TBTST. A few days later, I performed in a concert at Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus honoring my childhood rabbi, Rabbi Ed Farber. And a few days after that, we had our very own “A Jewish Night On

Broadway II”. Needless to say, the rest of the month has been spent recuperating from all of the performances. And to think, Broadway performers have 8 shows per week! I also took a brief trip to New York City where I had the opportunity to see the new revival of Fiddler on the Roof (at the very last minute) as well as Finding Neverland. I had the opportunity to meet one of the Fiddler actors, Adam Kantor, and sing through some of his great-grandfather’s old cantorial sheet music (see previous Scroll article). My musical adventures are never ending. In all of these performances, I have sung music written by a Golden-Age cantor by the name of Moishe Oysher. Oysher was a cantor who first had his start in the theatre, performing with his parents in Yiddish vaudeville in Russia, Canada, and the U.S. Eventually, he went on to become a cantor (the 6th generation in his fam-ily to do so) but never forgot his roots as an actor. He continued to act in theatre and film concurrently with his cantorial career. Oysher was best well known for infusing his cantorial music with sounds of modern theatre and jazz of the early 20th century. Most famously, Oysher’s settings of Amar Rabbi Elazar and Chad Gadya are perfect examples. Very soon, we will be celebrating Pesach. Here at TBTST, we will have both sed-ers: the first co-led by Rabbi Gold and myself and the second led by me. Oysher’s Chad Gadya is my personal favorite and I try to perform it in each concert and seder that I am a part of. For years, it is the version I use at my family’s seders and was the version I used this past year at our TBTST seders. You can count on me to use it again this year. Why Not Join a Committee?

As it happens, much of the “work” of TBTST and most of the planning takes place in committees. So, committee mem-bership is a great place to begin becoming involved in synagogue life. Every congregation relies on its volunteers both to work and to lead. Most committees are open to all who are interested and willing to participate. Two committees that are very in-terested in finding new, enthusias-tic members are the Membership Committee, and the Marketing and Communications Committee. Volunteers are always welcome to be part of our Tikkun Olam com-mittee, the sponsors of our enor-mously successful annual Mitzvah Day. The Rabbi is always looking for people interested in the Adult Education Committee. Our Ways and Means Committee serves as a program committee and manages many of our synagogue events. Extra hands are always sought to help in those activities. If you have children, you know about our PTOs. Keep them in mind as well. Both the Sisterhood and the Men’s Club sponsor programs and support activities that benefit the synagogue. They both do their work in a social atmosphere and many deep friendships have arisen among their members. If the notion of a committee conjures up the world of corporations, cubicles and bureaucracy (ours are much friendlier by the way) think about becoming active in one of our auxiliaries. Only you know what might interest you and, if you do, let the office know and they will put you in touch with the relevant chairperson. If you know that you would like to help, but are unsure about just what you might enjoy doing, talk to one of the officers of the congregation or to the presidents of the Sisterhood or the Men’s Club.

HAZAK Inaugural Program

On Sunday February 14, 2016 HAZAK presented “The Jews of the Shanghai Ghetto” with Helene Herman as the guest speaker.

The program was a huge success with about 67 attendees, many joining HAZAK at the event. Positive comments were abundant. Using slides and film with per-sonal accounts we learned how and why Jews came to Shanghai before and during World War II seeking to escape from Nazi Europe. In addition, there was the role of Japanese and Chinese righteous individuals to save the Jewish people.

Following the presentation a list of resource material was made available to further learn about the makeup of the Jewish ghetto then and how Jewish Shanghai looks today.

HAZAK is presently preparing the next program which will take place Sunday May 22, 2016 at TBTST.

Jewish Music Through the Ages A few weeks ago, Cantor Angress, Jennifer Hope Wills, and Alan Mason entertained us in A Jewish Night on Broadway 2. The concert reminded me of the prominence of music in Judaism, from ancient times, through the Middle Ages, to today. Music has always been an important part of my life, simultaneously as an active participant, student, and intrigued observer, and Jewish music in particular has always been special to me. According to the Talmud, the original temple in Jerusalem

had an orchestra of twelve instruments, with a choir of twelve male singers. With the destruction of both temples, this custom ceased, however, over time, the concept of singing during prayer returned and became a common staple. Hazzanim (Can-tors) grew in prominence as worshippers yearned to be led in song and prayer, and cantillation took form as melodies were introduced for reading the torah. Over the first ten centuries, as the prayers we now recite daily were originally written, many melodies were introduced. Over time, these were passed down, al-tered, and replaced as local customs and tunes influenced Jewish prayer. Varying customs and melodies emerged from Ashkenazi, Sephardi, and Mizrahi traditions, thousands of miles apart on different parts of the globe. Fast forward to Eastern Europe in the 1800s and klezmer music could be heard at weddings and other joyous occasions. This secular instrumental style had roots in synagogue prayer and cantillation. As Jews left the shtetls, klezmer was introduced to other countries, including the Americas. In modern times, Israeli folk songs have provided us with a national identity and solidarity for the Jewish state of Israel. In synagogues, the melodies of Shlomo Carlebach and Debbie Friedman have quickly caught on and touch a new genera-tion of Jewish congregants. From “L’cha Dodi” on Friday evening and Shabbat morning torah trop, to the singing of “Hatikvah” at special events, and “Simmen Tov and Mazal Tov” when we celebrate, we can truly get a sense of our rich and storied Jewish musical tradition.Amir Watynski

I have been an active member of the South Florida Jewish com-munity for over thirty years. Both of my children attended Jewish

day schools as do my two grandchildren. I currently belong to two congregations; one in Hollywood and one in North Miami. I have always made Judaism and com-munity a central part of my life. Now I look forward to joining and embracing the Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek family.

In the last 32 years I have been with three congregations and have made many good friends in each of them; people who have enriched my life and I feel privileged to have known and worked with. Have you noticed our upgraded playground? When you come into the building on your way into the sanctuary, please peer out the etched windows and see our newly renovated play area.

You'll notice the grassy green surface covering the cushioned protective under layer, insuring that our children can play safely.

Since our playground is used year round, it gets lots of use. Unfortunately our renovation costs ran higher than initially expected because the ground needed to be properly prepared.

This would be a wonderful opportunity to make a contribution to help underwrite the cost of the playground renovation and support our children.

Choosing the right school is a big decision. One that takes a lot of research and time. The spring is the time that many new families start to look for schooling for the upcoming year. We tend to give a lot of school tours to parents and children this time of year. Being a play-based Early Childhood Center, I get asked often about our curriculum. More specifically about our play-based approach and how it differs from entertainment.

To me the answer is simple, play-based education is how children learn. Kids are born with natural curiosity about their world and the desire to explore and learn. They have a drive to touch, taste and feel everything around them. This is how they learn. Just knowing that kids are born natural explorers is the first step in understanding how to support their development through play.Our PreK class just finished a unit about health, hygiene and the human body. They learned about good food choices, dental hygiene, the different organs we have inside us and our skeleton system. By finger painting we are not only creating art, we are doing sensory play, learn-ing about our colors and how when mixed together, can make brand new colors! After a recent rain shower we saw a rainbow. After a child asked how a rainbow got in the sky we studied how rainbows are made. We reinforced colors, counting, patterns, science and more. Our 2016-17 school year registration is now underway. If you, or someone you know may be interested in our school please give us a call for more information. It is hard to believe that Purim is over and Passover is just around the corner. From plots, decrees and salvation to slavery and liberation, a lot has happened throughout history, the Jewish nation has faced crises, discrimination and distraction. However, in a mysterious way, we have been able to survive and come up stronger than ever. What makes our nation so different from others? What values do we hold that distinguish us from other nations?

The first and foremost would be the way Jews perceive the role of education in one’s life. Thousands of years ago, when reading was uncommon, Jewish children learned how to read. The one and only book in their curriculum was the Torah. Jewish approach to learning always was that we do not know it all, but are always willing to learn. It is o.k. to ask questions, since from the question comes the understanding that a journey to discovery will begin. While families sit around the table to read the Hagadda, during the Passover Seder, adults ask their children the four questions. Why is it that we ask the questions and not just tell the story? What is the significance of the questions? By asking the same questions every year, over and over again, we challenge our children to not just memorize the chain of events, but we provide them with the opportunity to ask their own questions and challenge us, the adults. This is part of the learning process, where we challenge our abilities and always strive for more knowledge. In the modern society knowledge is perceived as power. However, it is the way that you use your knowledge that makes you stand up and be counted. Last year, during our Holocaust studies, I challenged my six grade students with the simple question: How would you use the knowledge you gained in this class to make a difference in your life and the lives of others? This question led to the “Six Million Steps to Holocaust Awareness” walkathon. The idea became a successful commu-nity event. It united two Jewish communities together and $ 5,000 was raised and donated to the March of the Living, to be given as scholarships. About 1,300,000 steps were counted toward the goal of 6,000,000 steps of remembrance. On April 10, 2016 we will conduct our second annual community wide event. We in hope that many more of our community members will join us to raise awareness to the horrific events that took place and to make sure “Never Forget”.

The Greatest Weekend on Earth:2016 Regional Convention

Get ready for a three-ringed-circus at the 2016 USY Regional Convention—but actually, a circus. The theme of this year’s an-nual convention centers around the big top we know and love. From April 15-17, USYers will experience a weekend of delightful davening, exciting events, and fun friendships in Tampa at the Tampa Airport Marriott.

Some of the convention agenda has fun, friendship, davening, ruach, senior quotes, and so much more. The chairs of this year’s convention are Abby Leroy and Sophia Libow. They’ve worked tirelessly for months to guarantee that the convention will be a success. Everyone knows that conventions are all about having fun, but in order to do that it’s important to follow the rules of the convention. After being in USY for four years, here are some of the things that I’ve learned.

DON’T-Don’t wear inappropriate clothing.-Don’t disrespect convention grounds or staff.-Don’t engage in prohibited activities.

DO-Make new friends.-Follow rules.-Make the most of the opportunity. Regionals is an incredible experience and you don’t want to miss a minute of it.

Regional convention for seniors is especially impactful, because they reveal quotes that mean a lot to them. Whether made up on their own or from their favorite TV show or song, each senior quote says a lot about the USYers and their four year experience. Reading quotes in front of the whole convention is one of the best and most sentimental way to say good-bye to USY. All eyes will be on USY in the center of the ring just like a circus for this memo-rable final convention of the year.

TBTST Sisterhood Annual Fashion Show

“The purpose of life is to have a life of purpose.” This quote by Robert Byrne has always rung true to me and being a member of TBTST and being part of Sisterhood allows all of us to lead such a life. Whether on land or even at sea we have worshipped together, prayed together, studied together, celebrated together, and supported one another. We have continuously demonstrated

a commitment to the continuity of our Jewish customs and values. In addition, all through the year, not only do we lend support to the different arms of the synagogue, we are also ever mindful of the call for Tikkun Olam. We have donated to JAFCO and Kolot, reached out to the residents of Hatikvah House and have supported the all -important work of Step Up For Israel. We are continuing our commitment to repairing the world by selecting Magen David Adom as our sponsored Sisterhood Shabbat charity. Founded in 1930, MDA – the name means “Red Star of David” – is Israel’s national emergency, medical, disaster, ambulance and blood bank service. Staffed by 1200 emergency medical technicians and paramedics, it nonetheless relies heavily on its over 10,000 volunteers, who give over one million man-hours per year. Unfortunately, the need for emergency medical services is an ever constant concern in Israel and MDA meets that need by saving lives every day. Just this past month we hosted a Shabbaton where Women’s League For Conservative Judaism Florida Region, in conjunction with the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs, honored both international presidents, Carol Simon and TBTST’s very own Allan Gottesman. Jacqui Montag and Cheryl Temkin, our fashion show honorees this year, have selected the Carol Simon/Allan Gottesman Convention Fund as their chosen charity. Such a fund will help defray costs and expenses for those wishing to attend future conventions. Attendees come back to their communities inspired with renewed passion and new ideas. By supporting both these worthwhile endeavors, we are insuring the continuation of Jewish life, a life committed to Torah, worship and loving deeds. I thank all of you for your support. I wish each of you a very Happy Passover and wonderful seders!!

As part of our New Roads to Engagement Project, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek is encouraging couples or families to bring their com-mon interests to the syna-gogue. This is not a religious group, but a group of family or friends that want to social-ize together. Perhaps it is an existing group of friends that you join each month to have dinner with, see a movie or attend a play. Any group of people with common inter-ests can form a Chavurah. Shortly, you will receive a brochure and questionnaire describing this concept, and asking only for you to complete and return the questionnaire to the syna-gogue office. Based on your responses, we will form a group that fits your needs. Please join with us as we reach out and engage our congregation. Watch for our brochure!

What is the place of the jewish father in the 21st century? I am not alluding to going to work and making money to feed and clothe the family. That is an accepted responsibility. Rather, the question is what is the responsibility of the Jewish father in the religious upbringing of his children? I contend that it should be more than paying temple dues and outsourcing it to the religious school or the temple youth groups. Even if a father is not religious there is no denying that the

precepts of judaism can give a young person a basis for stability and morality in their lives. A social rallying point that that can give them stability in their child-hood and may be more important when they go away to college, get married or most importantly when they have their own children. This is why, in the next year, a major focus of the Men’s Club will be to develop programs and events which will include both children and their fathers, grandfa-thers, uncles, or even male neighbors. We hope to give our “fathers” the tools to have brief friday night service at home, sing songs and march around the table especially with our young ones. When we bless our children it is special for both them and you; even if the teenagers give you those weird looks. You, the father, make the Shabbat special for the entire family. It does not matter if all the words are pronounced perfectly as long as the family togetherness and love is there. To-gether, hope to develop very brief, age appropriate, discussion sheets so at holiday time our fathers can discuss the meaning with their children. If you have any ideas on how we achieve this or want to help on these projects please contact me. Sisterhood Higher Education Scholarship Award The Sisterhood of Temple Beth Torah Sha’ray Tzedek will be initiating a College Scholarship to recognize a High School graduating senior who is a member of the congregation who demonstrates exemplary leadership, serves as a role model and positively impacts the synagogue in a way that assists our members and the community we serve. The objective of granting the award is to encourage our youth to assume an active role in synagogue life and to make a life long commitment to the continuity of the Jewish people. The award will be for $500. Guidelines 1. Open to all 12th graders who are graduating high school and will be attending a

formal educational program after high school.

2. The award is based upon the following three criteria: Leadership: Demonstrates initiative, creativity, drive, consistency, integrity, service and is a positive role model. Jewish Identity: Jewish knowledge and learning. Impact: Contributes toward others’ Jewish identification and involvement

3. 2 letters of recommendation must be signed by the youth group adviser, director

or Rabbi on official letterhead 4. Each student applying for the scholarship needs to write an essay sharing his or

her involvement in Temple Beth Torah Sha’ray Tzedek and how it has helped our synagogue. The essay should be a maximum of 500 words.

5. A panel including the Rabbi, President of Sisterhood or their delegate, and a

representative from the Sisterhood Officers will review nominations and select the award winner.

Tree of LifeThe tree has always been a symbol of life and strength in the Jewish tradi-tion. The parts of the tree depend upon one another just as those in need in our community depend upon Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek for help and support.

In the same manner, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek depends upon the generosity of our community to enable us to continue to provide that support. The Tree of Life is the perfect symbol to allow us to recognize the generous donors who, in turn, help us to continue providing necessary services to our community.

PRAYERS FOR THE SICK If a relative or friend is suffering from an illness, perhaps you would like to recite a special prayer for the speedy recovery of the ailing person. Traditionally, the Hebrew name of the sick person and the Hebrew name of the sick person's mother are mentioned during the prayer. It would be helpful if you would provide us with this information when you make your request. Prayers for the recovery of the sick are customarily accompanied by a gift to a deserving charity. The merit of this kind deed arouses God's mercy and His powers of healing. Although any amount is deemed appropriate on such an occasion, a gift of CHAI - $18 - or multiples of 18 - is particularly fitting when pleading for a person's recovery from sickness. CHAI in Hebrew means life. The two Hebrew letters which constitute the word - CHET and YUD - have the numerical equivalents of eight and ten respectively, together yielding the sum of eighteen. For this reason it has become a custom to give charity in the amount of CHAI when praying for the well-being of a suffering person. Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word, which literally means “time of year” or memorial. Jews of Ashkenazi descent use this term. Sephardim call this commemoration nahala, in Ladino. This custom is widely observed and based on the Jewish tradition of commemorating the death of a relative.

All the Yahrzeit rituals are deeply ingrained in the Jewish life. The common rituals that are performed in the honorable memory of the departed soul include reciting the Kaddish prayer and lighting a Yahrzeit candle.

Yahrzeit also includes the action of donating charity in memory of a deceased loved one. Through the performance of the mitzvah of tzedakah in the name of the departed, the merit of the deed is shared with the soul of the late relative, as their memory is enhanced.

Become an important part of TBTST's Social Action Committee’sMazon Project

The WECARE community outreach program operates a food pantry that provides over 3,500 bags of groceries each year to our neighbors in need regardless of race, religion, age, gender or nationality. We could not accomplish this important mitzvah if not for the generous donations we re-ceive year round from caring individuals, organizations, schools, synagogues and businesses in our community. Thanks to United Way of Broward County, we are also able to distribute fresh produce to needy people through Project Lifeline. Donations are greatly needed and appreciated to keep our shelves stocked so we can help the many men, women and children needing our services throughout the year. Currently, WECARE provides enough free non-perishable food and fresh produce to prepare over 65,000 meals for our neighbors in need. WECARE also collects small toiletry items, provides free medical equipment loans including wheelchairs, walkers and canes, distributes hand-knitted items to nursing home residents, and collects eyeglasses and hearing aids that are sent to New Eyes for the Needy. Donations of toiletry items and medical equipment are very much appreciated. Facts about Hunger in Broward County According to Million Meals Committee, there are 19 active food pantries in Broward County inclusive of the Soref JCC WECARE Food Pantry, and 4 active food banks. The Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Inc., Food Security Survey Report notes that 44% of all students enrolled in Broward County elementary schools qualify for free and reduced lunches. 15% of 56,873 Broward children live in poverty.
