It became a spiritual and devotional home tomany Kashubian Poles who arrived in Detroit between 1865and 1914. The church was built from 1883-85. It wasdedicated by Bishop Caspar Henry Borgess, the Bishop ofDetroit, on July 4, 1885.

P.A.P.A. 2012 CONVENTIONThe 23rd Annual National Convention of the Polish

American Priests' Association (P.A.P.A.) was held from April 16- 20, 2012 in Michigan City, Indiana, hosted for the first time byits Indiana Chapter. The convention venue was the Blue ChipCasino and Spa Hotel, which provided a warm and hospitablehome base for all of the convention delegates from throughoutthe U.S.A. and Canada.

P.A.P.A. is a national organization through which Polishpriests from around the country unite to deepen their priestlyfraternity, promote the cultural, traditional, and spiritual valuesof Polonia, and deal with the pastoral and ecclesiastical concernsaffecting Polish Americans. It is invaluable for the members ofP.A.P.A. to be able to gather annually, where the insights andperspectives of members enrich everyone, and bring forthconcrete proposals to practically and effectively address the matters at hand. P.A.P.A. is atrue blessing to its priests and to the Church!

The convention began with the National Officers and Board of Directors meeting onthe afternoon of Monday, April 16th. This helped to formulate the outline for thebusiness portion of the proceedings and led into the Opening Banquet and first sessionwhere national officers President Fr. Eric Orzech of Cleveland, Vice-President Msgr. PeterZendzian of Brooklyn, Secretary Fr. James Miara of New York, and Treasurer Fr. WalterPtak of Detroit, inaugurated the 23rd Annual Convention.

On Tuesday, April 17th, following prayers, the business session was greeted andaddressed by the Most Rev. Andrew Wypych, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, who alsoserves as Executive Director of the Catholic League for Religious Assistance to Poland. The delegates then headed to St. Hedwig Church in Gary, where they were met withgreat hospitality and an enthusiastic reception. Mass was celebrated by the Most Rev.Dale Melczek, Bishop of Gary, who also delivered the homily. Afterward, the groupstopped to see St. Adalbert Church in Whiting before journeying to the Cavalier Inn inHammond for a festive lunch. While there, delegates were treated to a brief presentationby Robert Fattore, PRCUA Director of Sales. From there, the priests went around thecorner to beautiful St. Casimir Church in Hammond and then St. Stanislaus Church inEast Chicago, before visiting the Polish Carmelite Monastery and Shrines in Munster.Following a tour of the Shrine grounds, a wonderful dinner was served before thedelegates returned to the hotel for the evening.

Eric Orzech, National President, who also preached the homily.Afterward, the parish provided lunch for everyone during which the priests wereserenaded with a beautiful program offered by the school children. The rest of the daywas free, offering everyone the opportunity to enjoy the many points of interest in thearea, as they wished. As with each evening of the convention, a delightful hospitalityroom was available to everyone upon their return.

Thursday, April 19th, was a day-on-the-road as the delegates journeyed to SouthBend. After visiting that bastion of French Catholicism, The University of Notre Dame dulac, Mass was celebrated at St. Hedwig Church, offered by the Most Rev. Kevin Rhoades,Bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, who also preached and joined thegroup for a delicious lunch in the parish hall. From there, the priests went on awhirlwind tour of South Bend's Polish churches: St. Stanislaus, St. Casimir, St. Adalbert, and St. Stanislaus Kostka. Afterward, they stopped by the oldest Polish parish, St. Maryof Czestochowa in Otis, before returning in the mid-afternoon to the hotel.

Following a brief respite, a business session was held where the election of newnational officers and a few directors was conducted. P.A.P.A.'s new officers are: Fr.Walter Ptak of Detroit, President; Fr. Eric Orzech of Cleveland, Vice-President: Fr.Nicholas Coffaro of Saginaw, Secretary; and Fr. Joined by over 200 representatives ofIndiana Polonia, good food, good entertainment, and a good time were shared by all.

On Friday, April 20th, Mass at the Blue Chip, and the homily, were offered by Past-Pres. Fr. Eric Orzech, who then brought the 23rd Convention of P.A.P.A. to a close.

In 1975, the Adult Culture Group of the PRCUA, in an effort to raise funds for scholarshipsgiven to the candidates participating in the Annual Cinderella-Prince Charming Ball, hosted itsfirst Spring Fashion Show. Thirty-seven years later the M. Konopnicka Adult Culture Group(MKACG) of the PRCUA continues this time-honored tradition of raising funds forscholarships. The talents of Cinderella and Prince Charming Ball candidates, their moms andsome Adult Culture Group members, were showcased throughout the Spring Fashion Show.

The 37th Annual Spring Fashion Show was held on Sunday, March 4th at the Sabre Roomin Hickory Hills, Illinois. This year's event, chaired by Bonnie Zawora and Halina Avila, proudly celebrated "Fun in the Sun". And what fun we all had! The show opened with ourKimberly Bond candidates modeling to "Dancing in the Street."

As the show continued, commentators Teresa Skorusa and Tom Frankowicz introducedfashions by Dress Barn, Deb's, Men's Warehouse, Windsor, Christina's Bridal, ABA Tuxedo, and Kimberly Bond Boutique. Terri and Tom - with grace and charm - presented the models tosongs representing summer fun.

There were no winter blues at this event. "Soak up the Sun" was the motto as the teenagegirls danced with some of the candidates’ moms. The teenage boys looked debonair in theirsuits from Men's Wearhouse and reminded us of those "Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer."The teen girls and the lovely moms put on their sunglasses as they were "Walking onSunshine," flirting with their "Summertime Guys" dressed in Deb's and Windsor casuals. Andthe boys, with some of their moms ,let the "Summer Wind" take them away.

Not only was the audience entertainedby the models but the Fashion Show alsoincluded wonderful guest entertainers. WesolyLud, under the artistic directors/choreo-graphers Misia and Richard Jaminski, performed their "Jive." The music and theirtalent kept everyone in a party mood.

The younger models: David Balenda, JoannaBurdzy, Katarzyna Burdzy, Anna Richardson and AniaTumiel performed a sweet number choreographed byKasia Avila to "Sloneczko." This Fashion Show wouldnot be complete without these little sunshines.

T h e nthe HHPDCompany dancers, Elise Schall, Gigi Aggozino, and Ashley Udaykee, directed by Liz Dynowski, performed an exciting jazz dance to "Fireworks",celebrating the 4th of July.

No MKACG Fashion Show is completewithout the wacky and wild performance ofEd Muszalski, Walter Dynowski, JohnFrankowicz, and Stanley Dron, who donnedtheir "Itzy Bitzy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka-Dot Bikinis" and danced on stage to raisefunds for scholarships for our Polish-Americanteens. These wonderfully funny fellows, had everyone in the audience cheering with delight attheir humorous antics.

The afternoon's show ended with a finale featuring the 2012 Cinderella Sylvia Kupiec andand Prince Charming Paul Cwyl, along with candidates dressed up to the nines in fashionsfrom Christina's Bridal and ABA Tuxedo, as they danced the night away to "Summer Nights."

Edward Muszalski, MKACG President, thanked everyone for making the event such ahuge success. He appreciated all the hard work done by all the committee members: HalinaAvila & Bonnie Zawora, Chairwomen; Model Co-ordinators Halina Avila, Bonnie Zawora &Gabby Zuk; Reservations - Walter and Liz Dynowski with Stanley Dron & Angie Muszalski;Raffles - Mary Brzezniak, Veronica Crouchelli, Diane Cortesi, Stan & Mary Dron, JohnFrankowicz, Vickie Kroplewski, Danielle Kroplewski, Krystyna Lech, Anita Richardson, JolaStanek, Danuta Stypula & Gabriela Zuk. Program Book and Stage Manager - Monica Pazdiora;and Fashion Show Choreographers Liz Dynowski and Kasia Avila. You did a great job!

After all that fun, even more excitement was in store as guests won prizes and moneyraffles. Prizes were donated by many organizations, businesses, and PRCUA members. Themonetary donations and gifts are greatly appreciated.

The 41th Cinderella and Prince Charming Ball will be held on Saturday November 19, 2012at the Lexington House in Hickory Hills. Dyngus Day Celebration at PRCUA Society #1031Dyngus Day Celebration at PRCUA Society #1031By Jennifer Henning

On Monday April 9, 2012, PRCUASociety #1031 celebrated Dyngus Dayfestivities in LaPorte, Indiana. FinancialSecretary Jennifer Henning invitedPRCUA President Drobot to attend thisyear’s celebration and he took her up onthe offer.

Dyngus Day is a post Lenten bash. It isa Polish-American tradition that is alwaysheld on the day after Easter. In La Porte, itis a day to show Polish pride, flirt withpussywillows and listen to Polka music.

This is also a day to savor the best Polishdishes and enjoy a few beverages. The

history of Dyngus Day holds that on Easter Monday, boys would sprinkle the girls with waterand tap them with pussywillows. On Easter Tuesday, the girls would return the favor.

LaPorte held its 25th annual Dyngus Day celebration and PRCUA President Joseph A.Drobot Jr. and his lovely wife, Judy, were guests of Society #1031. Approximately ten othertaverns and clubs also participated in the event. The city's local bus service provided free ridesfor patrons to visit every establishment. Each establishment provided a Polish dish, variousdrink specials and music entertainment.

The visit of Pres. & Mrs. Drobot began at PRCUA Society #1031 Club. They dined on PolishChicken Goulash prepared by Society #1031's very own Club manager, Arlene Phillips. Society#1031's Sergeant-at-Arms Norman Lott and Financial Secretary Jennifer Henning escorted Mr.and Mrs. Drobot to visit PNA Lodge #1120 in LaPorte. The group visited with many members. They also visited Polish Falcons Nest #564. The Drobots agreed that it was very nice to meetwith other members of local Polishclubs. The PRCUA group waswarmly welcomed everywhere.

Mr. and Mrs. Drobot met andspoke with many PRCUA members, including those pictured to the rightand Soc. #1031 Secretary Sandi Lottand members Rick and Lori Lambert.

The visit ended much too soon. The Drobots agreed to join us againnext year on April 1 for Dyngus Dayand April Fool's Day all wrapped upin one celebration! We look forward tocelebrating again next year with Mr.and Mrs. Drobot.

Those games pushed four teams into theB-Division Playoff. In the first game, theNibblers outscored the EC Aces by 2 and, inthe other Semi-Final, Flexeon beat St. Rita's#2. In another great duel, a beat-up Nibblersteam had just enough against Flexeon.Smooth shooting Rick Kolze took home theMVP rolling cooler bag, while John Suski,JD Fabian, Jimmy Michaels, Pat Dermeyer, and Bartek Kwasniewski took home the All Star gym bags.

After all those preliminary and first roundplayoff games, four teams advanced to the ASemi-Finals: St. Stan's #3, Ph.D.s, Mr. Peter'sBoys and Society #162. Ph.D.s overcame St.Stan's # 3 in a passionate battle. PoundtownExpress defeated Mr. Peter's who had animpressive 3-1 run in the Tournament with the

infusion of some youth this year. Watch out, next year in NY! In the finals, Society #162's Poundtown Express beat the Ph.D.s in a great

seesaw game. The Poundtown Express was led by big 3-balls from slickshooting Dan Budzyn, the overall Tournament MVP. Charles Hutson, MarkGrkinich, John Lukowski, Danny Newell, Mike Belczak, VinceKazmierczak and Gary Kazmierczak were the A-Division All Stars.

At night, the atmosphere turned calmerand more sophisticated as the teams enjoyeda beautiful banquet and awards ceremony atthe Lost Marsh Golf Course Banquet Facility. The Poundtown Express and their beautifulcompanions “cleaned up” wonderfully afterthe Championship only an hour earlier. St.Rita's brought their sport coats. Entertainment was provided by Ph.D. guardand wounded warrior, Dave Padilla. Dancing was held to a minimum, mostlikely due to everyone’s soreness after the games. But the pinnacle of theevening was ourPresident's impassionedquestion: What do thecommercial insurancecompanies provide for youin terms of fraternalism? Many first-time as well asthirty-time Tournamentcompatriots understoodvery well exactly what hemeant.

The Tournament Committee would like to thank all the players and fans(including our good friends from Pittsburgh) for participating, as well as thegreat support from PRCUA Resident VP Anna Sokolowski and her PRCUAExecutive Assistant Mary Jane Robles. We also would like to thank our localpartners Lisa Kusiak, Dave Padilla, Hammond Councilman Mark Kalwinski, the East Chicago Goodfellows Club, the Lost Marsh Banquet Center, CristianFlores, the Bishop Noll Girls Basketball Team, Bishop Noll Institute and St.Stan's Grade School.

Personally, I would like to thank all the "Aces" who stepped up to help, including the #1 Ace, my wife, Cathy. The people who took on large roles

included Ralph Flores, Tom Stibich, Tom 'TC' Carr,Tony Rodriquez, Jerry Stafford, Cristian Flores, KevinKnight, John Lukowski, Stacey Zurek, Teddy Flores,Wally Kasprzycki and David Kesic.

- By Richard Sobilo, Tourney ChairmanThe PRCUA thanks Richard Sobilo for doing an

excellent job in chairing this successful and enjoyable 78thPRCUA National Basketball tourney.

On Friday March 23rd, well over 100athletes descended on Hammond, Indiana forthe 78th Annual PRCUA National BasketballTournament with visions of fun, camaraderieand glory in their sights. Mr. Peter's Boysfrom Buffalo, NY logged the most travelmiles, but we appreciate all the out-of-townteams that participated. It was a greatweekend with wonderful representation fromour President Joseph Drobot, Res. V.P. AnnaSokolowski, V.P.Bob Bielenda and Secretary-Treasurer Jim Robaczewski.

The weekend started out withfraternalism at the Hospitality Room atthe East Chicago Goodfellows Club onFriday. With the backdrop of the NCAABasketball Tournament on the TVs,everyone had fun seeing old friends whowere very soon to become ardentcombatants.

The games started at 8 a.m. on Saturdaywith all teams separated into four 3-teamdivisions - Osajda, Drobot, Dykla and Ozog. The Nibblers grabbed the Number 1 seed fromthe Osajda Division, while Ph.D.s and Mr.

Peter's Boysbattled throughthe Drobot and Dykla Divisions on top, respectively. Rounding out the positional playwas Flexeon grabbing the highest seed in theOzog Division. The runner-ups in each divisionwere also placed into the A-Playoff first round.

Four teams advanced to C-Division Playoff. In the first round, St. Stan's #1edged St. Stan's #2. In the other first round game, St. Rita's #2 beat the upstartsCioteczny from East Chicago. Ciotecznyconsisted of players from former YouthDivision Teams who played the last timeSociety #413 ran the Tourney in 2009. It alsoincluded one girl playing in the Men'sDivision, Elena Sobilo, who held her own with

t h eb o y sagainst the men. In the Championship ofthe C Division, St. Stan's #1 held off St.Rita's #2. Travis Harvey captured MVPhonors in the C Division. Max Hojnacki,Jeff Levangie, Keith Kujawski and WillKasprzycki were the All Stars.

One comment heard from severalTournament veterans was about the overallquality of the teams participating. Any one ofprobably six teams could have won theTournament. One example of the competitivenature of the weekend was the EC Aces whofinished 1-3, losing by a sum of 9 total pointsincluding an overtime loss. This made the firstround match-ups in the A Playoff crucial, withthe winners moving on and the losers moving to the B-Division. St. Stan's # 3

beat the Nibblers, then the Ph.D.s edgedthe EC Aces in overtime, in a battle thatsaw several weekend warriors go down.In the bottom of the bracket, Mr. Peter'stook St. Rita's # 1 and PoundtownExpress upset Flexeon by three points,

one of the teams thought to be a favorite.

Patriotyzm Jana Paw³a IIw pracy doktorskiej Jana Jaworskiego

- Ubieg³y rok by³ szczêœliwy dla pana. W Polskim Uniwersytecie wLondynie obroni³ pan pracê doktorsk¹. Temat dysertacji: “Podstawypatriotyzmu Jana Paw³a II”.

Praca moja by³aho³dem z racji beatyfikacji papie¿a, a obrona odby³a siê w paŸdzierniku 2011r., który to jest miesi¹cem rocznicy wyboru Papie¿a-Polaka Jana Paw³a II.Cieszê siê, ¿e pisz¹c tê pracê nie tylko sam siê wzbogaci³em duchowo, aletak¿e przybli¿y³em naszym rodakom zagadnienie patriotyzmu.

- Dlaczego zainteresowa³ siê pan szczególnie patriotyzmem papie¿a?- Po pierwsze dlatego, ¿e w tysi¹cletnich dziejach Polski i naszego

narodu nie by³o Papie¿a-Polaka. Jeœli nasz rodak by³ nastêpc¹ Piotra, tooznacza³o dwie rzeczy: Polska da³a Koœcio³owi Powszechnemu cz³owieka,niezwykle mocno zakorzenionego w “nasz” model prze¿ywania wiary,“nasze” - tak bogate cierpienia - dzieje zbawienia. Jan Pawe³ II wniós³ topolskie doœwiadczenie Chrystusa do wspólnoty innych kultur i narodów.

A potem o wolnoœæ dlasiebie i innych wytrwale siê upominaæ. A jednak sta³o siê.

- Ciekaw jestem, jakie w¹tki pana pracy szczególnie interesowa³ypromotora i recenzentów?

- W planie mojej pracy przedstawi³em g³ówne elementy nauki Papie¿a.Jan Pawe³ II - stan badañ nad problematyk¹ patriotyzmu i nacjonalizmu.

nad Wis³¹.

narodowych dziejów, do piêkna jêzyka polskiego, do bogactwa kulturyPolaków, do ojczystej ziemi. Rdzeniem tejkultury by³ dla Papie¿a Chrystus i Jego Ewangelia. S¹dzê, ¿e trzeba do takiejperspektywy patriotyzmu wracaæ tak¿e dziœ, by w epoce globalizmu takczêsto bezwzglêdnie niszcz¹cej mniejsze narody, ocaliæ w³asn¹ to¿samoœæ -trzeba pielêgnowaæ kulturê ducha.

To prawda o czym pan mówi podkreœlaj¹c moj¹dotychczasow¹ dzia³alnoœæ. Co do upowszechnienia mojej pracy doktorskiej,to chcê poinformowaæ, ¿e w Lublinie ju¿ wkrótce uka¿e siê moja ksi¹¿ka,wydana przez wydawnictwo Norbertinum, ze s³owem wstêpnym MetropolityKrakowskiego kardyna³a Stanis³awa Dziwisza. Jestem wdziêczny izaszczycony tym s³owem najbli¿szego wspó³pracownika Jana Paw³a II.

Pragnê jeszcze podkreœliæ, ¿e ktokolwiek z Polonii robi coœ dobrego, czyosi¹ga jakis cel swego ¿ycia, staje siê radoœci¹ ca³ej wspólnoty. Cieszê siê, ¿eprzybli¿y³em rodakom patriotyzm B³ogos³awionego Jana Paw³a II Wielkiego.

- Œciskam d³oñ, raz jeszcze gratulujê. Czekamy na ksi¹¿kê.rozmawia³: Janusz Kopeæ, luty 2012
