PRAYER WITHOUT GOD

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CO-PRESIDENTS

GOD TALK SESSIONS

A Series on God for Skeptics and BelieversWith Rabbi Rosenbaum after Shabbat services, 12:15 PM-12:45 PM

Session One: April 14Prayer Without GodHow discussing the purpose of prayer without referencing God can actually lead us to an understanding of God.

Sessions 2 & 3: May 5 & August 4Topics to be announcedJoin us for a stimulating series!

Spring is a time for renewal. Many of us greet the season by preparing our homes for Pesach, guests and celebrating traditions, while expressing our gratitude for our freedom and remembering

those who still struggle. At the sign of those first blooms on the cherry blossom trees, we are heartened anew by the blessings that abound in our community of Herzl-Ner Tamid.

As this article goes to print, members of our tireless search committee will be deciding on a recommendation to hire an assistant rabbi. The competition for the few available candidates is fierce, but regardless of whether we successfully hire a new assistant rabbi or not, our congregation continues to grow in strength and mitzvot.

The number of social action events alone highlights the compassion and kindness in our community. Over 20 volunteers regularly tutor at Leschi Elementary where your generosity is also providing healthy snacks and school supplies for vulnerable children. Members have stepped up in record numbers to serve meals at the Men’s Emergency Shelter and we look forward to spring projects that include providing birthday parties for homeless children and helping at Eastside Baby Corner (see page 4). A special thanks to the Social Action Committee for their work on these activities, and to Julie Ellenhorn and David Isenberg for stepping up to chair this busy committee.

Our Mitzvah Corps, under the steady hand of Judy Ziedman, continues to provide meals to those in need. Our morning minyan is renowned as a place of healing for those who want to daven kaddish in community or just start their day in prayer.

Our religious school continues to thrive, with our teens heading to LA this month as the culmination of a year of preparation and study. Many thanks to Gwenn and Dean Polik and Valerie Polack z”l for making this unique program possible through their generous donations.

Upon hearing the news that our beloved Rabbi Rosenbaum, who has served us so nobly and compassionately these last 17 years, will be taking his much-deserved retirement July 31, 2019; we are sure that you join us wishing him well, while knowing we will miss his leadership dearly. Let’s spend the next year letting him know how much we appreciate his work and contributions to our community. The Board of Directors is working on a succession plan for the Senior Rabbi position, which we will share over the next few months. There will be opportunities for your input as the search commences; stay tuned for ways to join the dialogue.

We look forward to seeing each of you at the Volunteer Appreciation & Annual Meeting on Tuesday May 15th (see page 5) when we will hear from representatives of Leschi Elementary and Congregations for the Homeless. We will also celebrate our volunteer efforts with a complimentary dinner followed by a brief annual meeting where we will vote on a new slate of officers and next year’s budget.

A MESSAGE FROM RABBI ROSENBAUM

Every year, Nance Adler at JDS invites me to give one of the series of God Talks to her eighth graders. It occurred to me that this would be a valuable experience for adults, too. So, at Shabbat services on

April 14, May 5, and August 4, I will be giving a series of three God Talks after services.

Here is how it will work. Services will go from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM without a dvar Torah. At noon, we’ll have 15 minutes to get our food at the Kiddush table and come back to our seats for a 30 minute study session on God. “Prayer Without God” will be the April 14 topic.

So, why would I choose to begin a series of God Talks with a session entitled “Prayer Without God”? My experience has taught me that when speaking about prayer, strange as it may seem, discussing God is best left to the end. In fact, it can be very useful to imagine what the experience of saying the words of the prayerbook might be like if we were to temporarily remove God from the picture. After all, today we are very familiar with spiritual practices that do not depend on God at all, like yoga and meditation.

These practices have well defined goals. They relieve stress, they center us, and they help us to experience our day less impulsively, more mindfully. Ask a meditator what she hopes to achieve and she will tell you how useful her spiritual practice is. But ask ‘is what use is daily prayer?’ and many of us will draw a blank.

So, what are the goals of prayer? How might saying the specific words of our prayer book be useful to us in the way we experience our day? Come on April 14, and we will talk about that! And, we may just find that answering this question will lead us to a deeper understanding of God. Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum

BAR MITZVAHEveryone is invited to share services and the kiddush following the Bar Mitzvah

David Rosenberg is the son of Rivka and Mickael Rosenberg and the brother of Miryam and Eliorah. His grandparents are Leon and Sylvie Rosenberg of Paris and Guy and Martine Marandel of Paris. David is thrilled to have his grandfather Leon, from France, joining the

celebration of his Bar Mitzvah. He is in 7th grade at Highland Middle School and loves music, singing and karate. He is a sensitive person and one of his goals is to make people smile.

He was really glad when he succeeded in this goal while he was playing music at the Caroline Kline Galland Home for the elders. We wish for him to continue in this way.

David Kohorn is the son of Michele and Adam Kohorn and the younger brother of Danielle. He is the grandson of Batya and Josef Ref of Scottsdale, AZ, Louise Kohorn of New York City, NY and Zwi Kohorn of Brookline, MA. David attended The Jewish Day School from preschool

through 5th grade and is currently a 7th grader at Pacific Cascade Middle School. David spends much of his free time playing soccer for the Issaquah Gunners. He also enjoys skiing, camping and reading as well as intense game of Rummikub with family. David has volunteered at Eastside Baby Corner, sorting through donated clothing and filling clothing orders for children in need and plans to continue volunteering there regularly.

Social Action Updates

Matanot La’evyonim: The Purim Mitzvah of Gifts for the PoorIn celebration of Purim, HNT members donated $1,525 to Jewish Family Service’s Emergency Services Fund. This fund helps vulnerable individuals and families achieve stability through funds for housing retention.

A huge thank you and yashar koach to Janet Gray for taking the initiative to collect funds in person at the Purim Shpiel. She reached out to folks in her friendly yet focused way and talked about the mitzvah of helping those less fortunate during this festive holiday.

Despite competition from hamentashen enthusiasts, she managed to collect $788 of our total, mostly in small increments. It demonstrates how passion, commitment and walking the talk herself over many years inspires others to help a little, or a little more. Thank you to all who contributed!

THE FOURTH ANNUAL BECOMING A LEADER TRIP TO CSS “According to the effort is the reward.”-Ethics of our Ancestors, Pirkei Avot 5:26

The b’nai mitzvah year at HNT is an individualized experience. Each student is unique and brings their own set of gifts and talents to the bimah (alter). At FRS teachers differentiated their instruction to meet each student according to their ability. The quote above from Pirkei Avot teaches us the more we put effort into the process, the greater the reward.

This philosophy of hard work pays off permeates our attempt to teach the next generation with vigor and grit. The fourth annual Becoming a Leader Trip August 21-23, 2018 at Camp Solomon Schechter is an ideal opportunity for middle school students to get out of their comfort zones and challenge themselves to exert their greatest potential.

The effort one puts into the b’nai mitzvah experience brings a great reward of satisfaction and by being immersed in the b’nai mitzvah journey on the trip, students enrich their understanding of the process by working together and bonding as a group. The trip is geared toward 6th through 8th grade students from HNT and beyond. The trip focuses on the b’nai mitzvah journey, both before and after, and how it relates to the coming of age experience on a personal level.

For students about to become a b’nai mitzvah and also for students who have already experienced this meaningful rite of passage, this trip is an opportunity to combine Judaism, ecology, and leadership in the beautiful Pacific Northwest at CSS. Alumni of the trip from previous years are encouraged to participate again to deepen their understanding and experience of leadership and ecology in a Jewish context.

The leadership opportunities for all the students on this trip are tremendous. The trip marks a transition in our student’s educational journey and we’re looking forward to your participation!

Students in high school and in our Madrichim and Masa programs are also encouraged to go on this trip to develop their own leadership potential. High school students can acquire 24 hours of volunteer time if they participate as youth leaders in the trip.

The cost of the trip is $340 for middle and high school students which includes transportation, meals, ropes course experience, lake programming, and lodging at CSS. In addition, we will participate in an outdoor adventure experience with Compass Outdoor Adventures the first day of our journey. Drop off is at HNT at 8:00 AM on August 21 and pick up is at HNT on August 23 at 5:00 PM. Please contact Dr. Eliyahu Krigel at [email protected] for more information about this trip.
