Jesus and the Bible

January 25 & 26 - USA to the Holy Land Your pilgrimage begins as you depart the USA on an overnight flight. Youwill be welcomed to the Holy Land by our airport representative andtransfer to your hotel where you will enjoy dinner before resting.

January 27 - Caesarea Maritima, Mt. Carmel, Megiddo, Nazareth,Mount of PrecipiceJourney to Caesarea by the Sea and stand in the place where it is

believed Paul addressed King Herod and Festus (Acts 25, 26). This portcity reveals many extensive remains of the theater and other sites, including a Roman aqueduct along the Mediterranean shore. Continueon your journey to Mt. Carmel where Elijah defeated the prophets of Baal(1 Kings 18). Biblically, Mt. Carmel is referenced most often as a symbolof beauty and fertility.  To be given the "splendor of Carmel" was to beblessed indeed (Isa 35:2). Travel the ancient caravan route to TelMegiddo where 20 different cities lie superimposed upon each other.Visit Nazareth, the boyhood home of Jesus (Matthew 2: 23) and theMount of Precipice, where Luke describes how Jesus was rejected bythose in the synagogue after He taught them. Filled with anger they “ledHim unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they mightcast Him down headlong” (Luke 4: 29).

January 28 - The GalileeThis morning, pray and sing hymns as you cross the waters of the Seaof Galilee by boat. See a 2,000 year-old sailing vessel that wasdiscovered and preserved at kibbutz Nof Ginosar. This is a rare find ofthe kind of boat Jesus and the disciples would have used to cross thesea and fish. Visit the Church of the Fish and the Loaves, at Tabgha, thetraditional location for the feeding of the 5000 (Luke 9:10-17). At theMount of Beatitudes read the sermon on the mount (Matt. 5-7). Next, travel to Capernaum, the center of Jesus’ ministry. Walk the streets ofChorazim, listed as a "city of woe" by Jesus (Matthew 11). Not far awayis Bethsaida where Jesus chose five of His disciples (Matt. 4: 18-21;John 1: 39-51). End your day remembering Jesus' Baptism at the JordanRiver.

January 29 - Tel Dan, Caesarea Philippi, Mt. Hermon, Golan Heights Visit the ancient remains of Tel Dan and the altar built by King JeroboamI (I Kings 12:25-30). Journey to Caesarea Philippi, where Jesus traveledwith His disciples and where nearby Peter made his great confession toJesus, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matt. 16:16). SeeMount Hermon and travel through the Golan Heights and betterunderstand their strategic importance to the security of Israel.

January 30 - Masada, Qumran, Jericho Enjoy a visit to Masada, the spectacular mountaintop fortress built by

Herod and famous as the last stronghold of the Jewish rebellion againstthe Romans. Ride the cable car to the top to explore the fortress. Peer

down upon the remains of the Roman camps and siege ramp below. Onthe way back to Jerusalem, stop at the shores of the Dead Sea, thelowest spot on earth, where those who desire may take a quick dip inthe mineral-laden waters. Visit Qumran, site of the Dead Sea Scrolldiscovery, to discuss the mysterious community of Essenes who oncelived on the shores of the Dead Sea. From Jericho, you can see thetraditional site of the Temptation of Jesus (Matt. 4: 1-11). Even today, the road from Jericho to Jerusalem twists for miles as it climbs frombelow sea level into the Judean mountains. Jesus traveled the nearbyRoman road, the setting of His parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-36).

January 31 - Bethlehem, Mount of Olives, Palm Sunday Walk, IsraelMuseum In Bethlehem visit the cave where Jesus was born and the church thathas been constructed on the site (Matthew 1: 18-25; Luke 2: 1-7).Nearby, you will view Shepherds’ Field where the Good News was firstheard. Stand atop the Mount of Olives as Jesus did and enjoy aremarkable view of the "Golden City" of Jerusalem. Forty days after Hisresurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven from the Mount of Olives (Acts1: 9 - 12). Walk the Palm Sunday Road down the Mount of Olives, stopping enroute at Dominus Flevit Church, a great view and excellentplace to sing. Understand better the Jerusalem of Jesus’ day with a lookat the First Century Model of the City of Jerusalem, now housed at theIsrael Museum. The museum itself houses 10,000 years ofarcheological artifacts. Also visit the Shrine of the Book, where the Bookof Isaiah, discovered among the Dead Sea Scrolls, is displayed.

I am excited about the pilgrimage planned forJanuary, 2016 with friends from across theFlorida Conference and beyond. We will walk the shores of the Sea of Galilee, study the scriptures in the synagogue inCapernaum, pray on the Mount of Beatitudes, and renew our baptisms at the JordanRiver. We will then make our way to Bethlehem, and conclude our time together in Jerusalem, where we will enter the Old City and follow theWay of the Cross. I invite pastors, teachers, and members of ourchurches to join us in this profound experience oftravel, study, worship and fellowship. There isno way to adequately describe the power of theHoly Land for a disciple of Jesus Christ. Here you will rediscover the reality of thegarden, the cross, the empty tomb and the RisenLord. I hope you will make this pilgrimage with us in2016!
