    Etymology

In his 1986 Indian Names in Michigan,Virgil Vogel explained when KalamazooCounty was formed on July 30, 1830, itwas allegedly named from the Indianname of the river, Ke-kanaamazoo,the boiling pot. In the 1821 Treatyof Chicago, the village of Match-e-benarh-she-wish, was described as at thehead of the Kekalamazoo river.

Vogel suggests that the word may befrom the Miami, because of the Vogelcites Father Chrysostam Verwyst stat-ing the name Kalamazoo comes fromOjibwe as a corruption of Kikanam-soso meaning it smokes, or he istroubled with smoke and pronouncedkee-kah-nah-mo-zo or kee-kau-nau-mo-zo. Vogel also cites William R.Gerard as concurring in this opinion, that Kalamazoo is a slight alterationof older Ojibwe kikalmoza, meaning

    he is inconvenienced by smoke.
