There has often been violence bet!een the multinational companies and theindigenous people !ho have had their lives brutally impacted by the oilindustry. Just in the last fe! !eeks, a brave 8cuadorian huar leader, JosZCsidro Tendet4a /nt[n, !as found dead, tortured, and buried in suspiciouscircumstances mere days before he !as scheduled to travel to Iima, Peru forclimate talks. e had been a leader in the struggle to rein in mining and oilcompanies that threaten so much of his native 8cuador.8cuadorian President 6afael 0orrea has sometimes been praised andsometimes castigated for his stance on the /ma4on rainforest, most recentlye9ploiting the natural resources of the region by signing permits for oil drillingin one of the most bio diverse regions on the planet. Dn the other hand, hehas also made statements opposing 0hevron in the nearly t!enty year saga of

8cuadorian villagers against the oil giant over the clean"up of contaminatedareas.
