ROTOMATHS COMPETITION The annual Rotomaths competition was held at the Rotorua Girls High School Arena last Tuesday, September 3. This year, we had 6 dedicated teams of year 7’s and 8’s. These students practiced steadily throughout Term 3 during lunchtimes and the results paid off. The competition was tough, nonetheless, 5 of our 6 teams placed in the top 2 in their respective categories: The winning Year 7 Team was by represented by Lachlan Hogan, Nyla Fulo, Nath Ihita, Ben Breeze. The team of Joseph Carter, Annabelle Hogan, Mickey Wu, and Demi Yang placed 2nd. The third Year 7 team was made up of Anthony Montero, Harrison Roberts-Brake, Luca Finlayson and Ava Tremain. The Year 8 Team, represented by Aaron Muchirahondo, Mitchell Russell, Robert KC Khatri and Zach Hall, placed 1st, while the other two Year 8 teams composed of Anita Huang, Alannah Nielson, Morgan Maccormick, Ben Clarke and Gargi Vaidya, Lily Kautz, Kasey Hall, Oscar Westra placed 2nd equal. Congratulations to these students, for their hard work and dedication and well done on another successful year at the Rotomaths. Special thank you to our Year 12 student helpers on the day as well. Ann Wang and Renee Pingol Teachers in charge of Rotomaths

BAY OF PLENTY MATHSMIND COMPETITION

On 23nd August we took 16 Year 9 and 10 students over to Trident High School in Whakatane for the annual MathsMind competition. We were up against the top junior mathematicians from over 20 schools from all around the Bay of Plenty. First up to compete were our two year 10 teams made up of Veronica Chen, Madison King, Jaenelle Whittaker, & Megan Williams in one team and Daniel Butterworth, Leo Schweizer, Danyon Wang, & Ivan Zaw in the other. Both teams performed strongly with our boys feeling a little unlucky to miss out on a placing. Our Year 9 teams were up next with Nishali Patel, Hannah Seo, Lauren Stephens, & Sakie Sudo in one team and Max Peterson, Ranithu Sendiv Rodrigo, Renzo Umadhay, & Raphael Wang in the other. Both Year 9 teams also competed strongly with Max, Ranithu, Renzo, and Raphael taking out 3rd place. With all of our teams placing high in the competition it was exciting to be awarded the Henry Dixon Cup which is given to the top school with less than 1000 students from Year 9-13. Our students had worked hard in preparation for this competition and it was great to see them all do so well against strong teams from other schools. JUNIOR FOOTBALL SEASON COMPLETE After another long season, through Terms 2 and 3, the Rotorua Junior Football competitions came to a close this weekend, with varying degrees of success for John Paul College teams. In the 11/12th Grade competitions, JPC Lions had a great season and fought with great passion and sportsmanship. Sometimes against the odds, they produced wonderful performances and had an excellent experience along the way. Although positions are not published for this grade, it was clearly evident that the skills of the team developed week on week and some of these students can now have AIMS to look forward to next year. In the 13/14th Grade this year, we had three teams competing for the same title in the JPC Jaguars, JPC Eagles and JPC Kestrels. The JPC Jaguars were a team solely comprised of 13th grade players and fought hard throughout the season against older and bigger players. On many occasions there were excellent, skillful displays from the team and we wish them well at AIMS this week. The JPC Eagles were determined underdogs all season, but that didn’t stop them from having a great time along the way. Though they took some heavy defeats, they turned up week in week out, rain or shine, and put on a game. When their first win came late in the season, it was hard to know who was more euphoric: the players or the parents on the sideline. Our best showing in this grade though, was the JPC Kestrels, who finished a close second in this group. A mixed boy/girl team, they played some great football and gave their coach lots to be thankful for. Some great skills, as well as hard work and determination gave this team the finish they deserved and with a little bit of luck, who knows what could have been. The JPC Jets were our success story this year, as they took the 15th/16th Grade Championship undefeated. That is not to say there were not some difficult games, but they triumphed throughout and enjoyed an excellent season. They are an extremely talented bunch of boys and they are ready to begin their journey into the reckoning for our senior 1st XI Boys’ Football team in 2020. This has been part of a long-term plan in which they have come to dominate the local scene under the guidance of their coach Jason Trask. Much thanks must go to the coaches, managers, parents and supporters who have helped them through a long year – as teacher in charge, it is with great appreciation and open arms that I accept their generosity in making this happen for our children. I would particularly like to thank the following:

JPC Lions – Rich Logan

JPC Jaguars – Harry Van der Merwe, Marcus Tavendale

JPC Kestrels – Ben Page

JPC Eagles – Kieran Davidson, Caleb Copeland, Oliver Smyth and the Parent Army of supporters

JPC Jets – Jason Trask

Without your help and support, such a large sporting code could not succeed at John Paul College and so I am very grateful and appreciative of your efforts, time and patience. I hope that you can enjoy some of your Saturday time again.

HOCKEY

Congratulations to our 1st X1 boys’ hockey team, winners of the Hockey NZ Woolaston Trophy, held last week in Rotorua. The boys were undefeated, racking up big scores over the week. A fitting finish for the season for many of the players who have played their last game in JPC colours. Congratulations to Neil Watson and Fiona MacGregor, the coaches of the team. Neil and Fiona have both given long service to JPC hockey. The 1st X1 girls’ team finished 8th in the Jenny Hair Cup in Palmerston North. Thanks to the work of Michelle Aulding, Mikayla Wepa, the two coaches and manager, Pip Negus. Thanks to the five volunteers, Neil Watson, Fiona Macgregor, MIchelle Aulding, Mikayla Wepa and Pip Negus giving their time and in most cases using their annual leave to coach and manage the teams over the five or six days. I wish to acknowledge the hours and hours you have given to support sport in John Paul College and specifically hockey. It is very much appreciated! The 6 aside girls’ team is at AIMS this week. We wish them all the best in the girls competition. Reminder there will be two games this Saturday for our secondary girls against a visiting touring team. The JPC 2 girls will play at 12.30pm with the second game time to be finalised for the JPC 1 team. The Intermediate hockey is near its completion. We are waiting to hear what is happening with the last two days of competition. TIC Barb Northey

8-15 SEPTEMBER IS CARITAS' SOCIAL JUSTICE WEEK During this week the Catholic community focus is on the needs of those who require our Solidarity. The theme this year is fairness in an unfair world. This year our Faith in Action students have been supporting Love Soup who work tirelessly with the displaced and marginalised community in Rotorua. John Paul College will be supporting Love Soup by collecting clean, used or new toilet bags and hygiene products. These will be distributed to individuals and families, who may have no home, or have just moved into a home. We would love your support. We will drop these care packages to Love Soup for distribution. You may drop your items at the student counter. Examples are soap, body wash, toothpaste shampoo etc. Thank you for your ongoing support for our Social Justice initiatives this year. Veronica Aislabie TIC Caritas
