THOUGHTS . . . From Father Francis
Today is the Sixth Sunday of East-er. Friendship is dependent upon faithfulness. In today’s Gospel nar-rative Our Lord reminds us that our friendship with Him depends on that simple point of being faith-ful. Some days it is easy; others it is more difficult. Adoration, Rosary,
Confession and Mass are the links to that faithful-ness. Let these things lead us to the joy that the Lord promises to those who embrace them.
As a Christian Community we pray for our relatives and friends who are sick especially:
Pauline Ausman, Howard Blaylock, Philo-mena Bonacci, Clare Brown, Helen Burns, Patricia Churchill, Joan Cona, Ron Coppo-la, Fr. Francis Cornely, Joseph Costa, Me-
ghan Cunane, Pat Cunane, Bill D’Amico, Erin D’Avanzo, Mary DeSandro, Danielle Dobitsch, Pearl Doran, Chris Drago, Bernadette Flowers, James Giblin, Jr., John Horan, Anne Laird, Dee Lucci, Dan Murphy, John Murphy, Tony O’Hara, Rosalie Orlando, Dominic Rosini, Matthew Tomaini, Jimmy Vaccaro, Kim Varrasse, Patty Winter.

Prayer to St. Michael – St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in this day of battle.
Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into
hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

MAY “DID YOU KNOW” Corner
Mary… Queen of May
The origins of the May Crowning are hard to pin-point, although devotion to our Blessed Mother Mary originates in the earliest days of the church. Con-cerning the significance of the month of May, toward the end of the 18th century, Father Latomia of the Ro-man College of the Society of Jesus (in Rome) institut-
ed the practice of dedicating this month to our Blessed Mother. His desire was to promote devotion to Mary among the students as a way to counteract infidelity and immorality. From Rose, the May devo-tion spread throughout the Jesuit colleges, and even-tually throughout the whole church. Pope Pius VII in 1815 granted a partial indulgence for participat-ing in either a public or private devotion honoring Mary during the month of May; Pope Pius IX made the indulgence plenary in 1859. (This particular in-dulgence is no longer listed in the present Enchiridi-on of Indulgences. May probably seemed most appropriate because the liturgical calendars, former and present, mark several feast days honoring our Blessed Mother: Our Lady, Queen of Apostles (the Saturday follow-ing the Ascension); Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament (May 13); Our Lady of Fatima (May 13); Mary, Help of Christians (May 24); Mary, Medi-atrix of All Graces (May 31); and the Visitation (May 31). The May devotions also were energized by the four authenticated apparitions of our Blessed Moth-er. In 1830, Mary appeared to St. Catherine La-boure and instructed her to have the Miraculous Medal struck with the inscription, “Mary, conceived without sin, pray for who have recourse to thee.” In 1846, she appeared to the children of LaSalette, France, and tearfully lamented the lax practice of the faith. In 1858, she appeared to St. Bernadette at Lourdes, identifying herself as the “Immaculate Conception.” Finally she appeared to the three chil-dren at Fatima May 13, 1917, where she instructed the people to pray the rosary daily for peace.
Regarding the crowning, the image of Mary (as well as Jesus) wearing a gold crown is found in the earliest forms of iconography, especially in the Eastern Churches. In the West, the pious practice of publicly crowning an image of the Blessed Mother gained popularity in the 19th centu-ry. In Rome, the image known as Salus Populi Rom-ani – of our Blessed Mother holding the Child Jesus – is enshrined at the basilica of St. Mary Major. Tradition holds that St. Luke painted the image. Pope Clement VIII (1592-1604) added two crowns to the icon, which were at some point later lost. Never-theless, on August 15, 1838, the Feast of the Assump-tion, Pope Gregory XVI with great solemnity, again added the crowns, and thereupon the practice of crowning the image of the Blessed Mother became popular, especially during the month of May. In more recent times, Pope Paul VI, in his “Letter on the Occasion of the First of May” (April 30, 1965), noted not only the venerable tradition of May devotions to Mary, but also their importance: “It is precisely because the month of May is a pow-erful incentive to more fervent and trusting prayer, and because during it our petitions find their way more easily to the compassionate heart of Our Blessed Lady, that it has been a custom dear to Our Predecessors to choose this month dedicated to Mary for inviting the Christian people to offer up public prayers, whenever the needs of the Church demanded it, or whenever danger hovered menac-ingly over the world.” The Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship, to help celebrate the Marian Year declared by Pope St. John Paul II in 1987 to prepare for the new millen-nium, issued a ritual, Order of Crowning an Image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which captures the sig-nificance of this pious practice: “The queen symbol was attributed to Mary because she was a perfect follower of Christ, who is the absolute ‘crown’ of creation. She is the Mother of the Son of God, who is the messianic King. Mary is the Mother of Christ, the Word Incarnate… she listened to God’s Word and kept it in her heart; she remained steadfastly in close union with her Son, all the way to the foot of the Cross; she persevered in prayer with the Church. Thus, in an eminent way, she won the ‘crown of righteousness,’ ‘the crown of life,’ ‘the crown of glory’ that is promised to those who follow Christ.”

Icon of the Blessed Virgin – The Statue of Our Lady of the Eucharist and Grace adorns the front of
our Main Church Altar. Daily visits are encouraged for her grace and intercession.
Parking Zone – Please do not park in the “fire zone” along the side of the Church. While it is a quick way to exit after Mass, it is also dangerous if an emer-gency were to arise and the Fire/Rescue Department would come in response to an emergency and have difficulty gaining access to the situation.
First Communion – Over the past two Saturdays many of our children have received their First Holy Communion. Know that I am most grateful to the parents and catechists that prepared them for this special day. May the grace of this Sacrament be deepened each week in their lives as they join the rest of the Parish community at Sunday Mass.
Ascension Thursday – Thursday of this week is the Holy Day of the Ascension. The Mass times are as follows: Vigil - 7:00pm; 8:00 & 10:00am and 7:00pm on the actual day.
Monday, May 7 Chaplet of Divine Mercy – 7:45 a.m. (C) Rosary & Chaplet of Divine Mercy – 7:00 p.m. (Chapel) Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament – 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Chapel)
Tuesday, May 8 Chaplet of Divine Mercy – 7:45 a.m. (C) Caring & Sharing – 7:30 p.m. (OR)
Wednesday, May 9 Chaplet of Divine Mercy – 7:45 a.m. (C) Bible Study – 9:00 a.m. (PC)
Thursday, May 10 – Ascension Thursday Bible Study – 7:00 p.m. (PC)
Friday, May 11 Chaplet of Divine Mercy – 7:45 a.m. (C)

LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR For almost 150 years, the Little Sisters of the Poor have been privileged to serve and care for the elderly poor of Philadelphia in the same Charism of their Foundress, St. Jeanne Jugan, who took in an elderly blind and paralyzed beggar woman off the streets of France in 1839. Their apostolate includes begging and personally assisting the dying and re-verberates around the world in 31 countries with 180 Homes for the elderly poor. They profess a fourth vow of Hospitality that imprints their very lives through simplicity and humility with the intent of their vocation – “Making the Elderly Happy is Everything.” JJ The Little Sisters of the Poor will be visiting St. Thomas the Apostle on the weekend of May 19/20. Your support is greatly appreciated and is God’s tangible providential assistance to the poor.
