Robert Louis Stevenson was famous for writing adventure books like Treasure Island. But in 1886, he wrote a very serious novel – Jekyll and Hyde. In it, he explored the odd combination of good and evil in one person – how someone can have both high aspirations and yet do horrendous things. The existence of evil and cruelty made Stevenson begin to wonder if God really exists. All of his doubts converged when he visited a leper colony on the Hawaiian Island of Molokai. He wrote that it was “a pitiful place to visit, a hell to dwell in.” Stevenson wondered how God could allow such pain and suffering. He may have given in to despair had he not encountered a group of Christian disciples – led by Father Damien de Veuster – who were caring for the sick. The compassion of this community deeply affected Stevenson, who later helped to promote Saint Damien’s cause for sainthood! Our readings this weekend remind us how hideous leprosy can be. In addition to the physical grotesqueness, lepers had to alert others by identifying themselves as “unclean,” thus cutting them off from all social interaction. When Jesus healed the leper He not only healed the man’s skin but He also restored his relationships in the community.

Thankfully, we now have medicines that effectively treat leprosy. Nevertheless, there can exist within each of us an internal disfigurement. Stevenson acknowledged it when he described how the hideous Mr. Hyde lurked within the noble Dr. Jekyll. Lent, which begins on Wednesday, is an invitation to look within and seek renewal by rooting out all that is hideous. I encourage every parishioner to practice the Lenten disciplines of attending daily Mass and praying the Stations of the Cross on Fridays. I ask you to examine your conscience nightly and to Confess your sins weekly. These are good disciplines that can make us strong disciples…and strengthen our community.
