A Note from Fr. Ray
Practicing Spiritual Communion
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we have not been
able to gather as a parish around the Lord’s Altar and
receive Holy Communion since the middle of
March. In light of this, I once again write about
practicing Spiritual Communion. “Spiritual
Communion” is an act to which the saints have given
a consistent witness.
Spiritual Communion is a traditional practice of
expressing to the Lord our longing for Him and our
desire for him to enter our hearts.
St. Teresa of Avila (1515 – 82) said “when you do
not receive Communion and you do not attend
Mass, you can make a Spiritual Communion, which
is a most beneficial practice by it the love of God will
be greatly impressed on you.”
Receiving Holy Communion spiritually or physically
is an act of worship of God. In doing so, we are
called to conform our lives to Christ. By our lives we
can worship and live in communion with Jesus.
May God Bless You,
Fr. Ray
Welcome to Our
Lady of Mercy! We welcome you to enjoy this

Raymond Smialowski when Mass resumes, and to
register. Registration can be completed by stopping by
the parish office, filling out the short form on the front
page of our bulletin, or completing a short registration
form which can be found on our home page at
www.olmct.org under the heading “New to Our
Parish?” Please return the form to the office by
dropping it off at the Parish Office, the collection basket,
or mailing it to 19 S. Canal St., Plainville.

Loved Items from the Fair-Trade Sale CREA, who holds sales of fair-trade items at our parish has heard from
their artists and providers that they are in desperate situations, as
their opportunities for sales has dried up, due to the pandemic. The family of a woman in Guatemala, who makes jewelry, has no means to feed her family. To help support her and others that are assisted through CREA, please
contact Sr. Ruth at [email protected]. Your donation can save lives and give hope. As well, CREA has fair trade
chocolate, coffee, and olive oil in stock, ready for purchase.
St. Joseph Cemetery News We recently posted a notice in our parish cemetery
announcing that over grown shrubs will be removed by cemetery personel beginning June 1, 2020. An
overgrown bush is one that has grown higher than the monument that marks the graves of loved ones. If you would like to retain the bushes that may be present on the burial site of loved ones, please trim them so that
they are no higher than the accompanying monument. Please understand that there is a great need to maintain
our parish cemetery well.
In addition, glass vases, containers, wire fencing around monuments are not allowed in our cemetery. Such glass
objects and fencing are a potential danger to our personel, particularly when the lawn is being mowed.
Wire fencing can get caught in lawn mowing machinery
and cause mishaps and injuries.
We respectfully ask that you remove all of these items before June 1, 2020. After that date the cemetery staff
will be removing these items from the grave plots in the cemetery. We ask that you ONLY plant flowers 8”
from the base of the monument. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
Your Generosity is Overwhelming! We can’t thank you enough! Your donations are
enabling us to reach out to parishioners via Social Media, this Bulletin and Phone Calls. Did you get your phone call yet? If not, maybe we do not have
your correct phone number. Please call the office at 860.747.6825 to update your new phone number and/or your email address. Thank You again for
your unselfishness and fortitude in giving.
Need Some Inspiration? Head on over to the Holy Family Website at
https://www.holyfamilyretreat.org/homily-video-library and soak in the LOVE that they have to offer. If you are feeling like you have to get out of the house, you are more than
welcome to walk on their trails which spread out over 48 wooded acres, walk and pray the labyrinth, or pray the outdoor stations of the
cross. They will keep you up-to-date with news, events and opportunities available to nurture your faith as a follower on Facebook or Twitter. They look forward to supporting
your spiritual journey and seeing you on campus at one of their upcoming programs or
retreats.
Food Pantry Collection We are still collecting for the Plainville Food Pantry if you feel you want to give back to the community and God in some way. We invite you to leave nonperishable items in the Gathering Space any time during the week. Dale checks every other day to see if items have been donated.
He is able to bring it directly to the Pantry. For the month of May, 30 pounds were donated. Remember personal care items along with cleaning supplies are
always needed also.
Five Reasons Catholics Honor Mary in May By MARGE FENELON.
It has been a long-standing Catholic tradition to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in May. In most Catholic
churches (and even in many Catholic homes), a “May Altar” is erected with a statue or picture of Mary,
flowers, and perhaps candles. The altar stands from May 1 to 31 as a reminder of Mary’s importance in the life of
the Church and in our own lives as well. Additionally, many Catholic churches and families hold a “May Crowning,” presenting Mary with a crown made
of blossoms or other hand-crafted materials to signify her queenship as the mother of Christ, the King. I’ve even
![Page 5: John Patrick Publishing · 5/17/2020 · join us. Please plan to stay in your cars or near your cars in the parking lot during the crowning. The crowning will include singing some](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022071217/604c41b975ef053f8f041e0b/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
seen some crowns made of glistening metal and synthetic jewels.
Why May? It was during the Middle Ages (11th century) that the
idea of giving the month of May to Mary began with an old tradition, the “30-Day Devotion to Mary”, which was originally held August 15 to September 14. During the month, special devotions to Mary were organized, and this custom, which began in Italy eventually spread
elsewhere. Catholics do not worship Mary, we honor, or venerate, her as Jesus’ mother – we have adapted the early Greek and Roman customs of honoring important women in their religions by honoring the most important woman in our religion: Mary. Fine. That is why Catholics in general honor Mary during May. Here are five reasons why it makes sense to honor her this month. 1. Mary is Jesus’ mother. She is the instrument of the Incarnation and her yes, or fiat, made it possible for our Lord to become the God-Man who was Crucified for our salvation. 2. She is the first and most perfect disciple. Mary was the first to hear the Good News, and the first to follow Christ. Her entire life was devoted to him and assisting him, in whatever way she could, to carry on his mission. Unaffected by Original Sin, she was able to perfectly open herself to God’s will. 3. She is our mom. No, really. She is. To put it simply, she’s our mother because we are all members of the Body of Christ. Since she gave birth to that Body, then she’s our mother, too. At the moment she gave her fiat, she became our mother in the order of grace. She may not have given birth to us physically, but she certainly has given birth to us spiritually. 4. She loves you more than you can ever imagine. If she did not, would she have endured the horror of seeing her Son tortured, scourged, crowned with thorns, carry the Cross to Calvary, and die a gruesome death on it? She did it for you, for all of us, because she understood that Jesus’ Passion and Crucifixion was the only way to your (our) salvation. She loves you like no human mother ever could. 5. Mary is advocate, helper, benefactress and mediatrix. Her job, so to speak, began at the moment she conceived Jesus in her womb and continues until this day. What is more, it will continue for all eternity. As the first and
most perfect disciple, she is devoted to accompanying him and continuing her saving office by interceding for us so
that we may receive the gifts of eternal salvation. She is at work 24/7/365/forever, for whatever we need, whenever
we need it. For all these reasons and more, Mary deserves honor, not
only during the month of May, but always.

HOW TO INTERPRET THE MOTHER OF PERPETUAL HELP ICON.
Our Mother of Perpetual Help is a Byzantine icon that is believed to have its origin sometime during the 13th -15th century. The icon is known for being miraculous; over the centuries countless healings and special graces
have been attributed to it, so much so that the image has been honored and venerated by many Popes.
The miraculous icon is painted on wood and measures
about 20″ in height (54 x 41.5 centimeters) and depicts
the Virgin Mary, under the title “Mother of God,” holding the Child Jesus.
MOTHER OF PERPETUAL HELP ICON: HOW TO INTERPRET
1: Greek Characters: Largest and near the top of the
icon, we see the Greek letters ΜΡ θΥ = Mother of God; over the angel on the right is inscribed - O AP M = the Archangel Michael; over the angel on the left is O AP I
O = the Archangel Gabriel
2: Mary’s Star: Reminds us she is the dawn announcing the coming of Jesus. It symbolizes the role of Mary in
the mystery of Christ and the Church. The star indicates that she is the one who will lead us to Christ.
3: Mary’s Eyes: Mary’s eyes are filled with compassion and love, are fixed on us, her children on earth. She is our source of constant comfort and hope. Her eyes draw
all who look into her face toward the mystery of Redemption which she holds in her arms.
4: Archangel Michael: He is holding a lance, a pole with a sponge, and a vessel of vinegar. These prefigure scenes from Jesus’ crucifixion. The Archangel’s veiled
hands inculcate reverence for holy things.
5: Archangel Gabriel: Gabriel is holding a cross and nails, the very instruments of the coming death that has driven the boy Jesus to His mother’s safe embrace. His
veiled hands inculcate reverence for holy things.
6: Mary’s Cloak: The colors of Mary’s cloak symbolize both her virginity (red) and motherhood (blue). These
are also the colors of royalty.
7: Mary’s Hands & Arms: Mary’s hands and arms hold Jesus in a manner that indicates she is presenting Him to us. Her flat pointing right hand points directly into the
heart of the Christ Child, up to the Cross the angel is holding. Her left-hand position, along with the view of the right hand, is one of presenting the Child to those
who stand before the icon as she says: “Receive the Word of God.”
8: The Face of Jesus: The Christ Child looks out beyond the instruments of His passion to our future redemption.
While Jesus’ body is that of a child, His face is more mature, symbolizing wisdom beyond His years.
9. Jesus’ Hands: The joining of his hands with his mother’s signify the perfect conformity of Mary’s will
with Her Son’s, and that together with Him, she participated in the work of the Redemption.
10: Jesus’ Clothes: His green tunic symbolizes His humanity and creation. The red sash around His waist symbolizes the Blood of Christ shed for our salvation.
The gold cloak is symbolic of the Resurrection. Together, the colors of the garments are a statement of the Incarnation, Passion, Death and Resurrection of
Christ.
11. Mary’s Face & Mouth: The smallness of her mouth teaches us to be silent before the presence of God.
12. Jesus’ Feet & Sandals: The falling sandal informs us that He became human like us in all things but sin.
Showing his heel is from the promise of God in the book of Genesis 3:15: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall
bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
13. The Gold Background: The gold background represents heaven and the divine light of the
Resurrection shining through the garments of Jesus and

THE ASCENSION OF JESUS CHRIST
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;
and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the
earth." And when he had said this, as they were looking on,
he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went,
behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into
heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into
heaven." Acts of the Apostles 1:8-11
The Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ is described in the above passage from the Acts of the Apostles, and is
also noted in Mark 16:19 and Luke 24:50-53. Jesus refers to his Ascension in the Gospel of John when he tells
Mary Magdalene, "Stop holding on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father, but go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father,
to my God and your God" (John 20:17). Before his Ascension, Christ spent forty days teaching the Apostles and disciples about the Kingdom of God (Acts 1:3). The
Lord informed them that they would receive power from the Holy Spirit to be his witnesses to the ends of the
earth (Acts 1:8). The Ascension occurred at Bethany on the Mount of Olives (Luke 19:29). Christ's work of
redemption has become known as the Paschal Mystery of Christ and was accomplished principally by his Passion,
death, Resurrection, and Glorious Ascension into Heaven. The Paschal Mystery of Christ constitutes one
action for the salvation of mankind, for Jesus “was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for
our justification” (Romans 4:25).
Jesus Christ made multiple appearances in several locations to his disciples for forty days following
his Resurrection. For example, Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene in Jerusalem (Matthew 28:9-10, Mark
16:9, John 20:14-17), to two disciples on the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-32), to Simon Peter (Luke 24:34,
First Corinthians 15:5), to his disciples in the evening of that first day (John 20:19), and a week later to Thomas and the disciples (John 20:26). He appeared to James
(First Corinthians 15:7), and to Peter and the Apostles in Galilee (Matthew 28:16-20, John 21:1).
At the same time, Christ Jesus appeared to his disciples
even after his Ascension into Heaven. Stephen saw Jesus
"standing at the right hand of God" prior to his martyrdom (Acts 7:55). Saul experienced Conversion on the road to Damascus when he was blinded by a bright light and told "I am Jesus whom you are persecuting" (Acts 9:3-5). The Lord Jesus appeared to Ananias in Damascus, instructing him to baptize Saul of Tarsus (Acts 9:10-19). The "Spirit of Jesus" redirected Paul, Silas, Timothy, and Luke on the second missionary
journey towards Troas, where they boarded a ship for Macedonia, the first recorded introduction of
Christianity into Europe (Acts 16:7-10). The Lord reassured Paul to stay in Corinth after he had baptized
Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue (Acts 18:9). Jesus actually appeared to Paul in the Temple of Jerusalem (Acts 22:17-18)! The Lord stood by Paul in Jerusalem
and advised him that he was to "bear witness" to Him in Rome (Acts 23:11). His final appearance in Scripture was
to John on the island of Patmos in the Book of Revelation (1:10-1:20).
His glorious Ascension signified the completion of his time on earth, which is celebrated by the Church forty
days after the Resurrection and ten days before the Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit. Our Lord Jesus
Christ gave us hope by promising that "when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also" (John
14:3).
