IV. The Son of God and His ministry to His disciples - 13:1-16:33

A. the ministry of Christ as He washes the disciples’ feet - 13:1-17

1. Jesus loved His disciples to the very end - 13:1-4

a. Jesus knew that His hour had come - 13:1

this came at the time of the Passover the time was coming for Christ to leave this world

Jesus was going to return to heaven - John 14:2 the time was coming for Christ to return to the Father

Christ loved His own who were in the world Jesus would command them to love with His love - John 13:34-35

Christ loved His own until the end Jesus would later pray for His followers - John 17:9-19

b. Jesus knew that Judas would betray Him - 13:2

Jesus and the disciples finished eating the supper

none of the disciples had volunteered to wash their feet - John 13:12 Jesus knew what the devil had put in the heart of Judas

Satan took complete control of Judas a short time later - John 13:27 Jesus knew that Judas was going to betray Him

Jesus had predicted this much earlier - John 6:70-71

c. Jesus knew that He would return to the Father - 13:3

Jesus knew that all things were given into His hands Jesus knew that He had come from God Jesus knew that He would return to God

Jesus would tell the disciples He was returning to the Father - John 16:28

a. Jesus began to wash the feet of the disciples - 13:5

Jesus poured water and began to wash the feet of the disciples service to one another is best learned by example - John 13:15

Jesus then wiped their feet with the towel He had taken Jesus was willing to humble Himself like Mary - John 12:3

b. Jesus prepared to wash the feet of Peter - 13:6

Jesus came to Peter as He was washing their feet

Peter was usually the spokesman for the disciples - Matt. 16:13-16 Peter asked Jesus if he was going to wash his feet

Peter had sat through the meal like the other disciples - John 13:2

c. Jesus said that Peter would understand later - 13:7

Jesus told Peter he did not know what Jesus was doing now Peter was being taught to have spiritual understanding - Matt. 16:22-23

Peter needed the Holy Spirit to teach Him - John 14:26 Peter needed the Spirit to give him understanding - I Cor. 2:12-13

Jesus told Peter that he would understand later Peter would later understand the need for spiritual cleansing - I John 1:7-9

Peter needed Jesus to open his understanding - Luke 24:45

d. Jesus said it was necessary to wash the feet of Peter - 13:8

Peter said Jesus would never wash his feet Peter was embarrassed for not serving Christ - John 13:13-14

Peter heard what would happen if his feet were not washed Peter did not know what he would do that night - Luke 22:31-34

Peter heard that he would have no part with Christ there is no fellowship without cleansing - I John 1:5-9

e. Jesus heard Peter ask to be washed all over - 13:9

Peter immediately changed his words

Peter wanted to be used by Christ - Luke 5:8-11 Peter was ready to have his whole body washed

Peter greatly loved Christ and wanted to serve Him - John 21:17

3. Jesus explained that He was their Master and served them - 13:10-13

a. Jesus said that those who are washed only need their feet washed - 13:10

Jesus said those who are washed only need to be cleansed confession of sins (cleansing) is needed daily - I John 1:9

Jesus said those who are washed are entirely clean Christ saved us through the washing of regeneration - Titus 3:5

Christ puts righteousness to our account - Rom. 4:3,4,5,6,8,10,11,22,23,24 Paul learned that salvation (washing) is only needed once -Acts 22:16

Jesus said that there was one who was not clean Judas would soon be possessed by Satan himself - John 13:26

b. Jesus said that they were not all clean - 13:11

Jesus knew that Judas would betray Him

Jesus would tell the disciples one would betray Him - John 13:21 Jesus would tell Judas to do what he had to do - John 13:27

Jesus knew that Judas had never believed in Him Jesus fully understood the character of Judas - John 6:70

c. Jesus finished washing their feet and then took His place again - 13:12

Jesus then finished washing the feet of the disciples

Jesus wanted them to think as they watched Him - John 13:15-17 Jesus then put his outer garments back on

Jesus had laid aside these garments earlier - John 13:4 Jesus went and sat back down where he had been seated Jesus had earlier left the table and gotten a towel - John 13:4

Jesus asked the disciples if they knew what He had just done Jesus continually asked questions to test their understanding - John 6:6

d. Jesus said that they called Him “Teacher and Lord” - 13:13

Jesus said that they called Him “Teacher” Jesus often invited people to learn from Him - Matt. 11:29

Jesus said that they called Him “Lord” to call a person Lord also meant one was to obey - Luke 6:46

Jesus said that they were right Jesus said they were to follow the example of their Teacher - John 13:14

Peter said later that he had learned from Jesus’ example - I Pet. 2:21 5

4. Jesus said He gave them an example of serving one another - 13:14-17

a. Jesus said that they also ought to wash each others’ feet - 13:14

Christ is the Lord and Teacher every mature disciple will be like his teacher - Luke 6:40

Christ had washed the feet of the disciples the disciples saw the actions of Christ - John 13:4-5

Christ had shown them they were to serve one another we are to serve one another in love - Gal. 5:13

b. Jesus said that He had given them an example - 13:15

Christ gave the disciples an example to follow

we are to follow the example and pattern of Christ - Heb. 8:5 we are to do this because He gave us a better example - Heb. 8:6

Christ said we should do as He has done we are to follow in His steps - I Pet. 2:21

c. Jesus said the servant is not greater than the lord - 13:16

Christ said the servant is not greater than his master

Christ had called the disciples to be His servants - John 15:15 Christ said obedience changes servants into friends - John 15:14-15

Christ now calls us His brethren- John 20:17 Christ is not ashamed to call all the sanctified His brethren - Heb. 2:11

Christ said the one who is sent is not greater than the sender the one who sends is the one with authority - Luke 7:8

Christ said that He had been sent by the Father - John 6:38 Christ said that He now sends us - John 20:21; Matt. 28:18-20

d. Jesus said they were both to know and to do - 13:17

Christ said we are to know and understand these things

we are to know what Christ teaches - II Tim. 2:15 we are to understand what Christ teaches - Luke 24:27, 32, 45

we are to obey what Christ teaches - James 1:22 Christ said we will be happy if we will do these things

we are to obey Christ not just know what He said - John 15:14 we are to love one another as Christ loved us - John 13:34-35 we will be filled with joy and peace as we obey - Phil. 4:4-9

B. the ministry of Christ as He predicts His betrayal - 13:18-38

1. Jesus predicted that one would lift up his heel against Jesus - 13:18-21

a. Jesus said that one disciple would turn against Him - 13:18

Jesus spoke of what one disciple would do Jesus knew what Judas was going to do - John 18:2

Jesus knew the disciples that He had chosen Christ chose the twelve to be with Him - Mark 3:13-14 Christ chose the eleven to also be fruitful - John 15:16

Christ also chose them to do greater works - John 14:12 Jesus knew that one disciples would fulfill the Scripture

the prophecy about Judas is in Psalm 41:9 Jesus knew that one would turn against Him

Jesus even knew when Judas would betray Him - Matt. 26:46

b. Jesus was telling the disciples this in advance - 13:19

Jesus told the other disciples before it happened Jesus told the disciples many things in advance - Matt. 17:9

Jesus said this would cause them to believe Jesus did what He did to cause the disciples to believe - John 2:11

c. Jesus knew that the others would receive Him - 13:20

Jesus said that those who receive them receive Him

those who would accept them would accept Jesus - Luke 10:8-10 those who would hate them hated Jesus first - John 15:18

Jesus said that those who receive Him receive the Father those who receive Jesus also received the Father - John 14:8-11

those who hated Jesus also hated the Father - John 15:23

d. Jesus said that one of them would betray Him - 13:21

Jesus was then troubled in spirit Christ later experienced great agony - Luke 22:43-44 Jesus then told them exactly what would happen

Christ predicted His betrayal - John 13:26-27 Jesus said that one of them would betray Him

Christ knew what Judas would do - John 19:2

2. Jesus heard the disciples ask if they would betray Him - 13:22-26

a. the disciples did not know about whom Jesus was talking - 13:22

the disciples all looked at each other the disciples did not know which one Christ meant

the disciples wondered about themselves not Judas - Matt. 26:22

b. the disciple Jesus loved was sitting next to Him - 13:23

one of the disciples was leaning against Jesus John never uses his own name but calls himself the disciple Jesus loved

one of the disciples knew that He was loved by Jesus John used the same title for himself the next day - John 19:26

c. the disciple Jesus loved received a message from Peter - 13:24

Peter wanted to know whom Jesus was talking about

Peter was the one who usually did the talking - Matt. 16:16; 17:4 Peter signaled to John to ask Jesus their question the other disciples did not ask Christ - Luke 22:23

the other disciples had their attention on something else - Luke 22:24 Peter wanted John to ask who would betray Jesus Peter later learned what he would do - Luke 22:31-32

Peter thought he could never do such a thing - Luke 22:33-34 Peter found out how weak we are in ourselves - John 18:25-27

d. the disciple Jesus loved asked who would betray Him - 13:25

John then asked Jesus a direct question

the disciples wondered who would do such a thing - Luke 22:23 John asked who would betray the Lord

none of the disciples seemed to understand the answer of Jesus - John 13:28-29

e. the disciple Jesus loved had his question answered - 13:26

Jesus said He would give the person a piece of bread the person would dip at the same time as Christ - Mark 14:20 Jesus then dipped the bread and gave it to Judas Iscariot

Judas also asked if he was the one who would betray Christ - Matt. 26:23-25 Judas was the son of Simon

3. Jesus told Judas to do what he did quickly - 13:27-30

a. Judas had Satan enter into him - 13:27

Judas became possessed by Satan his life was spiritually empty - Matt. 12:43-45

Judas then had Christ speak to him Jesus knew what Judas was going to do - John 6:71 Judas was told to do what he had to do quickly

Judas knew exactly where he would find Christ - John 19:2-3

b. Judas was going to do something the disciples did not understand - 13:28

the disciples did not realize what Judas was going to do the disciples heard but they didn’t hear - Luke 22:21-24

the disciples did not realize what Jesus had just shown about Judas Jesus treated Judas with respect right to the end - Matt. 26:50

the other disciples never suspected Judas - Matt. 26:22

c. Judas was the one who served as treasurer - 13:29

the disciples knew that Judas carried the money bag Christ gave Judas the opportunity to know his own character - John 12:4-6

the disciples thought Jesus had told him to buy something Christ gave different responsibilities to various disciples - Luke 22:7-13

the disciples thought he might be getting things for the feast this happened the night of the Passover - Matt. 26:19-21

the disciples thought he might be giving something to the poor Christ had a great concern for the poor - Matt.19:21; Luke 4:18

d. Judas then went out immediately - 13:30

Judas received the piece of bread

Jesus gave Judas the piece of bread - John 13:26 Judas immediately left the upper room

then Jesus gave some of His most important teachings - John 13:31-16:33 Judas went out into the night

men use darkness to cover their evil actions - John 3:19 this was both physical and spiritual darkness - I John 1:6

spiritual darkness is great darkness - Matt. 6:23 the spiritually blind cannot lead - Luke 6:39

4. Jesus gave a new commandment to the disciples - 13:31-35

a. Jesus said He would be glorified - 13:31-32

Jesus waited until Judas went out Jesus told the disciples that the Son of man was glorified

Jesus would soon sit at the right hand of the Father - Heb. 12:2 Jesus said that God would be glorified in Him Jesus also brought glory to the Father - John 17:4

Jesus said that the Father would also glorify Him the Father is the One who glorified the Son - John 17:2

Jesus said the Father would glorify Him Jesus would be exalted by the Father - Phil. 2:9-11

b. Jesus told the disciples He would be leaving them - 13:33

Jesus said He would only be with them a little while longer

the time would soon come when they would not see Him - John 16:16 Jesus said that the disciples would seek Him

Jesus also explained what He meant - John 16:19-23 Jesus said that He was now telling them what He told the Jews

Jesus had told the Jews they would seek Him and not find Him - John 7:34 Jesus said the disciples could not come where he was going

Jesus would soon return to the Father - John 16:28 Jesus was going to prepare a place for them - John 14:2

c. Jesus gave the disciples a new commandment - 13:34-35

Jesus gave the disciples a new commandment

this commandment was repeated again by Christ - John 15:12 this love is described for us in I Corinthians 13:4-8a

Jesus said the new commandment was to love one another the commandment summarizes the entire New Testament - I John 4:10-11

(the statement “love one another” appears a dozen times in the New Testament) Jesus said they were to love one another as He loved them

this love requires that we understand Christ’s love for us - I John 3:16 this love requires actions and not just words - I John 3:18

this love comes from God - I John 4:7-10 this love gives us boldness in the day of judgment - I John 4:17

this love takes away fear - I John 4:18 this love will produce oneness in Christians - John 17:20-23

5. Jesus predicted that Peter would deny Him - 13:36-38

a. Peter asked Jesus why he could not go with Him - 13:36

Peter asked Jesus where He was going Peter had a great desire to be with Jesus - Mark 14:29

Peter heard he could not follow Jesus where He was going right then Jesus said the sheep of His flock would be scattered that night - Matt. 26:31

Peter heard he would follow Christ at a later time Peter did not fear death at a later time - Acts 12:3-11

b. Peter said that he would lay down his life for Jesus - 13:37

Peter asked why he could not follow Christ

Peter was sure that he would stand firm - Mark 14:31 Peter said that he would lay down his life for Christ

Peter said he would die before he would deny - Matt. 26:34 Peter was depending on his own strength - John 15:5

c. Peter was told he would deny Jesus three times - 13:38

Jesus asked Peter if he would really lay down his life

Christ told Peter that Satan wanted to sift him like wheat - Luke 22:31 Christ knew Peter would sleep instead of pray - Luke 22:45-46

Christ knew Peter would be strong when he was next to Christ - John 18:10-11 Christ knew that Peter and the others would flee that night - Mark 9:50

Christ knew Peter would follow Him at a distance - Luke 22:54 Christ knew Peter would sit down among the enemies - Luke 22:55 Christ knew that Peter would deny Him three times - Luke 23:56-60 Christ knew that Peter would remember and weep - Luke 22:61-62

Christ knew that Peter would decide to go back to fishing - John 21:3 Christ knew that He would restore Peter - John 21:15-17

Christ knew that Peter would one day really lay down his life - John 21:18-19 Jesus told Peter that he would not lay down his life that night Peter was told what he would really do that night - Mark 14:26-31

C. The ministry of Christ as He comforts His disciples - 14:1-31

1. Jesus explained that He was going to prepare a place in heaven - 14:1-4

a. Jesus told the disciples that they did not need to be troubled - 14:1

Jesus told the disciples not to be troubled

Jesus is the Prince of Peace - Isaiah 9:6-7 Jesus wants us to experience peace - John 14:26

Jesus says we can have peace because He has overcome the world - John 16:33 we are to replace our troubled thoughts with God’s thoughts - Phil. 4:4-9

Jesus reminded the disciples that they believed in God the Father had given witness of Christ - John 5:37-38 Jesus encouraged the disciples to believe in Him

Jesus told them why they could believe in Him - John 14:11-12

b. Jesus told the disciples that He would prepare a place for them - 14:2

Jesus said there were many mansions in His Father’s house heaven is where the throne of God is - Col. 3:1

Jesus said He would have told them if that was not a fact Jesus wanted the disciples to know about the future - John 14:29

Jesus said that He was going to prepare a place for them heaven is a prepared place for a prepared people - Rev. 21:1-8

c. Jesus said He would take them to that place - 14:3

Jesus said that He would come again

this coming will cause Christians to be changed - I Cor. 15:51-54 Jesus said that He would take the disciples to Himself

this coming will be for Christians at the Rapture - I Thess. 4:13-18 Jesus said that the disciples would be with Him

this coming means we will be with the Lord forever - I Thess. 4:17-18

d. Jesus said they knew where He was going - 14:4

Jesus said that they knew the way to where He was going Jesus told them that He is the way to heaven - John 14:6

2. Jesus answered the question of Thomas - John 14:5-7

a. Jesus was told the disciples did not know the way to the Father - 14:5

Thomas told Jesus they did not know where He was going the disciples continued to question what Jesus meant - John 16:17

Thomas told Jesus they wanted to know the way to where He was going Jesus would be lifted up so that He could be the way - John 3:15-16

b. Jesus said that He is the way to the Father - 14:6

(Three things Adam lost when he sinned) Adam lost his way - He listened to Satan

Adam and Eve listened to Satan - Gen. 3:4-6 Adam lost the truth - He accepted the lie of Satan

Satan is the Father of lies - John 8:44 Adam lost his life - He experienced spiritual death

Adam experienced separation from God when he sinned - Gen. 2:17; 3:8

Jesus said that He is the way this is the sixth “I AM” in the book of John

Jesus reconciled us to God - II Cor. 5:18 Jesus said that He is the truth

Jesus is the truth that sets us free - John 8:32, 36 those who know the truth hear Christ - John 18:37-38

Jesus said that He is the life Jesus came to give us abundant life - John 10:11 Jesus is the resurrection and the life - John 11:25

Jesus said He was the only way to come to the Father Jesus is the door by which we enter in - John 10:9

Jesus is the only One who can save - Acts 4:12

c. Jesus said that they knew the Father and had seen Him - 14:7

Jesus said that if they knew Him they also knew the Father Jesus said that He and the Father are One - John 10:30

Jesus said that from this time they now knew the Father Jesus revealed the Father to us - John 1:14
