What do you see when you think of this phrase: Earning Credit? What about this one: Favor? I think most people would

agree that people like receiving the praise of other people. Most of us would agree that we like earning credit for our per-

formance, abilities, and track record. I also think we would agree that trying to earn too often crosses a dangerous line in

our relationships.

When we only see people through the lens of what they earn it can damage relationships. However, it is far worse when

this thinking crosses over into our relationship with the Lord. If our flesh causes us to attempt to earn standing before the

Lord we can go to dangerous places. Trying to earn standing is like trying to earn salvation or holiness.

At the very beginning of the birth narrative of Jesus, the angel Gabriel ensures Mary knows a couple of things:

1. God welcomes her into his plan by giving her a task.

2. God will be with her, so she doesn’t have to settle in fear.

3. She is favored, she has found grace.

Notice that she doesn’t earn any of this. She has found favor. God didn’t owe it to

her. While Mary’s character is certainly a tool that God use through-

out her life, her character is still flawed because she was still human.

Mary needed the favor of God. So do we. Mary needed the help of

God. So do we. She was not super-human or super-natural. We

aren’t either. That’s really good news!

We believe that 2020 will be a great year in the mission of making disciples! I want to encourage you to pray specifically

for the Lord to use our efforts in His mission this next year. If you are looking for an intentional plan for growing as a disci-

ple of Jesus, here is the plan for our discipleship training as we prepare for the new year. We would love for you to join us

in these practices.

1. Memorize 2 Chronicles 7:14

2. Read one chapter of God’s Word every day.

3. Read "Prayer: The Timeless Secret of High Impact Leaders” by Dave Earley

4. Meet with a discipleship group. This consists of 3 to 5 individuals who can support one another and hold each other

accountable in following Jesus.

5. Ask a neighbor if you can pray with them. Don’t just say you will pray for them, but pray WITH them.

6. Spend focused. time in prayer and solitude with God. Ask Him for guidance on what He wants to accomplish through

you in 2020.
