8. [Hotels] Lot of 17 bound volumes of Western Hotel magazines: Guest; Western Guest; Front; La Diligencia. Seattle: Western Hotels, Inc., 1951 - 1980. Each volume bound in black buckram. All in near fine or better condition. With the color illustrated covers bound in. These trade journals are from the library of J. William "Bill" Keithan, Jr. Keithan was a WW II veteran, a Cornell Hotel School graduate, and a 33 year employee of Western Hotels (now Westin Hotels). He ultimately became Senior Vice President in charge of design and construction of hotels around the world. Upon retirement from Western he consulted on hotel projects and also taught at Cornell University Hotel School and served as the interim dean. These trade journals include articles on hotel service, Western employees, new hotels in the Western chain, amusing hotel anecdotes, hotel renovations, hotel coffee shops and restaurants and their chefs, hospitality tips and techniques, catering, hotel quizzes, a Western Hotels photo contest, hotel themed cartoons, and much more. The 1962 issue of Western Guest is particularly interesting, as it has great articles and photos of the Seattle World's Fair. The Western Hotel chain was formed in 1930 by a couple of Seattle hotel men who decided to band together to deal with the effects of the Depression which were already beginning to make a mark...they started with just a handful of properties but soon had 16. By the early 1960s the company had become Western Hotels International and managed many outstanding hotels here in the US and abroad, including the Plaza and the Savoy Plaza in New York, in addition to many of the better hotels in Washington and Oregon, including the Olympic and the Benjamin Franklin in Seattle and the Benson in Portland.

The dynamic President of Western Hotels, Eddie Carlson was instrumental in securing Seattle's bid to host the 1962 World's Fair...he later went on to be President of United Air Lines when UAL acquired the chain in 1970. These journals have much information and personal details about all the great Western Hotels, including the food they served and the people who provided all the service. Western Hotels became Westin Hotels in 1981, and was later acquired by Marriott International. $500.00
