Whenyoulaugh,hormonescalledcatecholaminesreleaseendorphins.Theseendorphinsmakeusfeelmorehappyandrelaxed.Everytimewelaugh,werelievestress,reduceanxietyandincreaseourstoreofpersonalenergy.Thepsychologicalandphysiologicalbenefitsoflaughterhelpuscopewithourownillnessesorcrankiness;italsohelpsusbettertoleratecrankybehaviorinthosearoundus.

Spring into Health and Fitness

Just20-30minutesofcardioadayhelpskeepthefataway.Examplesofcardioincludeusingatreadmill,walkingthepatharoundthelake,Nu-Steprecumbentcross-trainer,bikeriding,takingthestairs,Latindance,andaquaticclasses.

Walkingimprovescardiovascularhealth,balance,andmaintainsstrengthinyourquadriceps,thelargestmusclegroupinyourlegs.Awonderfulguidetobeginyourcardioprogramis“A12-WeekGuidetoHealthyWalking.”CopiesareavailableintheFitnessCenterlocatedintheCitrusBuilding as well as on page 6 of this issue of Village Life.

For those of you looking to boost your bonedensitywithexercise,liftweights.AccordingtoStevenMasley,MD,bonelosscanhavedebilitatingconsequencesasbonescanweakenovertime.CopiesofDr.Masley’sarticleareavailableintheFitnessCenter.

Beforestartinganewcardioprogramorweight-trainingprogram,agoodstarttopreventinginjuriesistolearnhowtousetheFitnessCenterequipment.Orientations are held Monday through Fridayfrom1:00p.m.to4:00p.m.Call386-775-3840ext.1250tosetupanappointmenttolearntousethemachines.

As you spring into health and fitness,rememberto have fun in fitness.YogainthePark,DOGA-YogawithDogs,andWii Bowling are fun,activewaystoincorporatelow-impactexerciseandgreatsocialization.YogaintheParkisthe last Tuesday ofthemonthat9:15a.m.inthePavilion,pendingweathertemperature.DOGA-YogawithDogs(bringyourdogorcomewithout)isthelastWednesdayofeverymonthat2:00p.m.inthePavilion.JoinmeandJacklinPrescottforthislow-impactfitnessprogram.OurWiiBowlingisofferedbothstandingandsitting(yes,sitting)attheFitness Center on Tuesdays and Fridays at2:00p.m.Wiibowlingisasuperfun,competitiveprogramthatcanalsoimproveyourhandandeyecoordination.

Onafinalnote,makesuretostayactive.Whether indoors or outdoors, there is alwayssomethingtobedoing.Themoreactiveyouare,thehappieryouwillbe.Trytofindatleastonefitnessclassaweektoattend,getyourcardioindaily,anddon’tbeafraidtoliftweights.

SallyHardyhasstudiedandmemorizedthehistoryandtechniquesofTaiChifor15yearsandreferstoitasgentle,relaxing,graceful,amovingmeditationresemblingdance.

SallyhasparticipatedinthedowntownOrlandoYMCA'sTaiChiclasses.ShehasalsobenefitedfromthebalanceenhancementclassesattheFourTownsYMCAinDeltona.Thereshecompletedthree12-weekTaiChisessionsexplaining,“Iwantedtomemorizeandlearnit.”MorrisSullivan,awell-knownTaiChiexpert,whotaughtatFourTownsandatJohnKnoxVillage,instructedSally.In2016,Sallyhadahipreplacementandpost-surgery,shecitesTaiChiashelpingherfocusonbalancingandturning.

Talina,ourJohnKnoxVillageFitnessCoordinator,askedSallytoteachTaiChi.WhileSallyiscarefultoexplainthatsheisnotacertifiedinstructor,shedoesfeel“verycomfy”doingit.Sally’sinnovationshaveincorporatedtheeightformsormovementsofTaiChiintoone20-minuteclass.Sheincorporatessoftmusicinherclasses;studentsarestanding,movementsareslow and easy and do not stress the body.Shedoesnotincludebalancingononefootorkicksandemphasizesthat students should concentratetostayfocusedonbalance.Sally feels it is very importantforallpeople to stop and focusbeforemakingturningmovements.

Fitness Classes Improve Quality of Life

Thisadviceisinstrumentalinpreventingfalls.Inwinter,SallyteachesoutdoorsatthePavilion,butmovesclassesinsidewhentemperaturesfallbelow60degreesorthesummerheatbecomesuncomfortable.

Likeotherexerciseenthusiasts,Sallyfeelshavingapositiveattitude,recognizingandworkingaroundyourlimitations,stayingmotivatedtomove,andenjoyingthecamaraderieinclassesareimportant.She agrees that these things along with goodgenesaddtoourlongevity.

MondaythroughThursdaymornings,SallyandMiles,herhusband,enjoyLatindanceclassestogetherfor30minuteswithTalina.SallydescribesTalinaasunderstanding and gentle and having greatrapportwithresidents.Sallyalsotakeslinedancingonceaweekwith Barbara May and their group, The Starlighters,entertainforJohnKnoxVillageeventsandforresidentsresidinginOakViewSuitesandMajesticOaksatJohnKnoxVillage.

CelestineFisherfeelsmuchhealthiersincemovingtoJohnKnoxVillagefouryearsago.Atthetime,sheworeabrace-likevest,wasexhausted,inpain,andoccasionallybedridden.Afterhavingkyphoplastytostrengthen her spine, she enrolled in the FitnessCenter’sexerciseprograms.Celestineraved, “Talina, our Fitness Coordinator, addresses the needs of individuals and those ofouragegroup,andthecamaraderieinourgroupisastonishing!”

Alongwithabout30others,CelestineattendstheAdvancedSeniorFitnessProgramthreetimesaweek,whichisdesignedfortotalbodymaintenance.Shealsoattendsalessdemandingclasstwiceaweek.Shestressed,“Nomachinesareusedintheseclasses.Iusethree-poundweightsalongwithwooden

dowelsandrubber-likebandsforresistancetraining.NowIwalkaroundthepond,navigatemultipleflightsofstairsfromourapartment,usenohelpingdevicesandIamthrivingontheexercise.LifeisbetterandIfeelfiveyearsyounger!”

Fiveyearsago,IdecidedtotakeadvantageofJohnKnox’sofferingofon-sitepianolessons.DuringmyfirstinterviewwithCharlaineFree,ourpianoteacher,sheaskedmewhatsongIwouldliketolearntoplayandIsaid“Stardust.”Now,thankstoCharlaine,lessons,practice,andadesiretofulfilladream,IcanplayStardust.Youmightevenrecognizeit!IlovemusicandnowIamabletoenjoyplayingotherfavoritesongsandameversogratefulthatItookthatfirststeptofulfilladream.

Duringher15yearsteachingatJohnKnoxVillage,Charlaine Freehastaught30residents.ShealsoteachesprivatelyandatStetsonUniversity.Shewilltellyouthatsheenjoysteachingmaturestudentsbecausetheybringaknowledgeoflifeandmusicfromadifferentera;theyareachangefromthetediousgrading/judgingofmoreintensestudents.Sheenjoysagoodlaughwithherstudentswhichis,indeed,thebestmedicine.

Polly Fordwasre-introducedtopianolessonsalittleoverfiveyearsago.Pollytooklessonsasachildandplayedoccasionallyasanadult.EdKristofikurgedPollytotakeadvantageofthelessonsofferedbyCharlaine.Pollysaystherewasaninstantconnectionandthatconnectionhasopenedanentirelynewrealmofmusicforherandhasallowedhertoplaypiecesthatshehadonlydreamedofplaying.Charlaine’steachinghasbeensupportiveandsheknowswhentopushandwhentotakeabreak.

Ed KristofikwasthecatalystingettingCharlainetoresumeon-sitelessonsafterabriefhiatus.Edstartedhislessonsasanewstudentsixyearsago.Edfeelsbrainexerciseisaby-productoflearningandplayingamusicalinstrument.Havingmorepersonaltimeavailabletopracticeandenjoythelessonsandmusichasbeenveryrewarding.

Getting to Know You

FourteennewresidentsattendedthesecondGettingtoKnowYouSocialforSinglesandCaregiverswhichwasheldonJanuary22.AnnGillis,JeanCrowleyandCynthiaDavieorganizedthedinnerandveteranresidentsAnnDecou,JeannineRodriquez,BarbaraBradley,DebraSheffield,RitaBrownandGitaDoshivolunteeredtoassistwithcheck-inandescortinggueststotheirassignedtables.

Eachnewresidentwasassignedaspecialtableassignmentatcheck-in,whenasmallstickerwasplacedonthebackoftheirhandwhichcorrespondedwiththeirassignedtable.

Regrets.Weallhavethem.Haveyoueverwishedyouhadnotreconnectedwiththatoldflame?Well,someonedid.Andwhataboutthedateyoupassedonorthesnideremarkyouwishyouhadn’tmade?GitaDoshicollectedtheanonymousregretsfromattendeeswhentheycheckedinandCynthiaDavie,displayingherusualgoodhumor,readthecommentsafterdinner.Humorousorserious,thebriefexerciseevokedafewchuckles. Attendeesquicklygotintothespiritwithpersonalintroductionsandsharingofwheretheycamefrom,wheretheylive,activitiestheyenjoy,howlongtheyhavebeenlivingatJohnKnoxVillage,etc.Thenewestresidentinattendancewasjustfourdays.

PhyllisDalegotthepartystartedwitharousingsinging of Getting to Know You.Amoviemusicaltrivia“NamethatTune”wasenjoyedafteradeliciousItaliansamplerdinner.Phyllisalsoprovidedsomeinterestingcommentaryaboutthemovies.

TheeveningclosedwithafewbarsofHappy Trails, anoldRoyRogersandDaleEvansstandard.Afittingwaytopartcompany!

TheannualFLiCRAmeetingwasheldintheBarkerCenteronJanuary8.Thisyear’sguestspeaker,BennettNapier,provided an update on last year’s state legislative session in TallahasseeaswellasthebackgroundonnationalandstateassociationsthatarelobbyingonbehalfofFlorida’sseniors.

NapierexplainedthatsincethepassingofFloridaStatute651in1990,therehasbeensomeformofreformforContinuingCareRetirementCommunities(CCRC)everyyearwiththeexceptionof2016,2017and2018.AbillsponsoredbyFloridaStateSenatorsTomLeeandJamesGrantalongwithFloridaHouseRepresentativeSeanShawcameclosetopassingin2018,butdidnotmakeittotheHousefloordespitebeingpassedatthecommitteelevel.

SenatorsTomLeeandKathleenPassidomoalongwithStateRepresentativeClayYarboroughwillbesponsoringasimilarbillthisyearwhichseekstocloseloopholesinpreviouslegislation, provide for early warnings and triggers for CCRCsthatmaybeexperiencingissues,provideforgreatertransparencyintheoperationofCCRCsaswellasprovidegreaterresidentprotections.AccordingtoNapier,thisisthemostcomprehensiveCCRCbillsincetheearly1990s.TheproposedbillhasaddedperformancemetricsforCCRCswhichallowfortheOfficeofInsuranceRegulationtostepinwithcorrectiveactionplansshouldaCCRCnotmeetthemetrics.

A Community of Happy Families

Barbara BradleyIhadbeenvisitingmyson-in-law’smother,LizMooney,atJohnKnoxVillageforanumberofyears.Ialwayshadagoodtimehereandfeltverywelcome.Onewinter,IdecidedmytownhouseinHarrisburg,Pennsylvania,wastoocoldanditwastimetosellandmoveon.Myfirstthoughtwasaranch-stylehouse,butthatwouldmeananothermovelateronwhenIcouldnolongerstaybymyself.SoIlookedatCCRCs,butnoneofthemallowedfencedbackyardsforpetsoradogdoorforSweetie.Wewouldhavetowalkonicysidewalksandriskfallsforbothofus.OK,let’snotthinkaboutitanymore.Thenextwintermydaughter,son-in-lawandIheadedtoJohnKnoxVillageforChristmastovisitLiz.Itwas80degreesandsunnywithlotsofshadytreestowalkunder.WhatmorecouldIwant!

Jean Crowley & Hugh WestonOurparentsmovedtoJKVinthe'80sandlivedhereuntiltheypassedawayinthe'90s.My brother Hugh and his wife, Claire, lived in CocoaBeach,Florida,andoftendroveovertocheckonMomandDadtobesuretheyhadthecareandsupportpromised.BothHughandClairewereimpressed!IlivedinnorthernNewEngland.WheneverIvisited,acottagewasatmydisposal.Aftermyhusbandpassed,IsoldourpropertyandheadedtoJohnKnoxafteradetourtoCocoaBeachfortwoyears.ConnieLloydkeptmeup-to-dateonavailablecottages;andwhenoneIlikedwasemptyin2010,Ijumpedonit.Ayearlatermybrotherfollowedandchosea3rdfloorapartment.AftereightyearsinmycottageonFlorabundaCircle,Idecidedtomovetoanapartmenttobeclosertomostoftheactivities.IcanhonestlystatethattheyearsIhavelivedatJKVhavebeensomeofthemostcontentandactiveyearsofmylife.Ihavegoodfriends,awonderfulsupportsystem,andabrotherandsister-in-lawnearby.Ittrulyisa‘WonderfulLife,’ifyouembraceit.Asothershavesaid,“Ifeelsafe,financiallysecure,andfortunatetobeaJKVresident.”

Pat Collins My husband Glenn and I were part of a very slow andstaggeredfamilymigrationtoJohnKnoxVillage.MysisterJoanneandherhusbandEdMolloywerethefirsttoarrive.In2014,andafteragreatdealofresearchonotherCCRCs,theyfellinlovewithJKV.Oneevening,whilediningattheBayRestaurant,JoanneandEdoverheadanothercouple(JimandDorothyNiesen)talkingaboutgrowingupinWilkinsburg,Pennsylvania–whereJoannewasfrom.AlittlegenealogicaldiggingprovedthatJim’sgrandmotherandourgrandmotherweresisters.ThisserendipitousmomentwasreportedintheDecember/January2014/2015JohnKnoxVillageLifemagazine.OnAprilFool’sDay2017,GlennandImovedintoJohnKnox.Wehaveonlyoneregret:wewishwehadmovedinsooner!Sadly,Joanne,Ed,Dorothy,andJimhaveallpassedaway.ThatleavesjustGlennandme,butoneofmycousinsisonmarketing’smailinglist,soit’sonlyamatteroftime!

Jane PikulaAfterGregandImovedtoFloridain1996,mymomshowedusabrochureshereceivedaboutJohnKnoxVillage.Wewerebothimpressedandintrigued.When preparing to retire, we visited several senior communities,bothrentalandlifecare.AfterourtourofJKV,weweresold,asnothinginFloridawascomparableincostoramenitiesoffered.Beforeretiring,IhadwantedMomtomovetoahomethatwouldbewithinwalkingdistanceofourhouse,asIdon’tdrive,butMomdidnotwanttoleaveherhome.IthoughtthatifwebothmovedtoJohnKnoxVillagewewouldfindhomesthatwouldbecloseenoughtoeachotherthatwecouldwalktowithnoproblem.Asitturnedout,ourcottagesareatwo-minutewalkapart,andIcanvisitMomanytimeIwant.Ialsoknewthatshewouldbeingoodhandsshouldsheeverneedextrahelp.Indeed,afterherlasthospitalization,shetookadvantageofJKV’sHomeHealthservices,andthatenabledhertogetbackonherfeetmorequickly.MommovedintohercottageinNovemberof2012andwemovedintooursthatDecember.InowhavethepeaceofmindknowingthatMomissafeandsecureinhercottage,andIcangettherequicklyifsheneedsme.Momhas often said that we are very fortunate to be abletoliveinacommunityasbeautifulandvibrantasourVillage,andmyhusbandandIagreethatchoosingJKVisoneofthebestdecisionswehaveevermade.

Continuing our series, “The Land Around Us,”wewillvisitanareatoournorththismonth:DeLeonSpringsandLakeWoodruff.Accordingtoanthropologists,thelandhasalonghistorygoingbacktowhentheTimucuanIndianslivedalongtheSt.JohnsRiverinalargesettlementatwhatisnowDeLeonSprings.Theyleftshellmoundsbehindfromsnails,whichwereamajorfoodsupply.Later,earlysettlersusedtheseshellsforsomeofthefirstroads.

Inthe1760sand'70s,EnglishnaturalistsJohnandWilliamBartramtraveledtheSt.JohnsRiver.Theirwrittendescriptionspaintavividpictureoftheareaatthattime.SomefiftyyearslaterwhentheUnitedStatesacquiredFloridafromSpain,theterritorywasopenedtosettlers.In1823,MajorJosephWoodruffpurchased2,020acresofland,thenknownasSpringGarden,surroundingwhatisnowDeLeonSprings.Hehadpartofthelandclearedforaplantation.HiswifeJaneHarrisWoodrufftoldinherjournalofthemanyhardshipsencounteredwhilelivingat“SpringGardenPlantation”wheretheygrewcotton,corn,riceandsugarcane.In1828,afteratriptoCharleston,MajorWoodruffdiedand

thefamilyceasedtoliveinFlorida.Theplantation was burned to the ground during theSecondSeminoleWar.ItwasrebuiltanddestroyedagainduringtheCivilWar.TodaySpring Garden Road winds its way through thepresent-dayarea,areminderofpasttimes.

ThenameDeLeonSpringswasfirstusedinthelate1880swhen,withthecomingoftherailroad,theareabecameawinterresort.Thespringwasproclaimeda“FountainofYouth”withthewatermaintainingaconstanttemperatureof76degrees.

Inthe1920s,ahotelnamedthePonceDeLeonSpringsInnwasbuilt.For30yearsthe inn and surrounding grounds and swimmingpoolwereatouristattraction.Notstandingthetestoftime,theinnwasdemolishedinthe1950s.

Thelandremainedinprivateownershipuntil1982whenDeLeonSpringsbecameastatepark.Intheearly1900s,asugarmillpoweredbytheflowofspringwaterwasrebuiltandawheelwasattached.Afteramajorrenovationin1999,somepartsstilldatetotheearliertime.

Doug ChurchwasborninSt.Louis,Missouri,andmovedtoWallingford,Pennsylvania,in1960.HegraduatedfromPennStatewithaBachelorofScienceinLandscapeArchitecture.HiscareerbeganinCenterville,Delaware,followedby12yearsinLancaster,Pennsylvania,wherehebecameamasterlandplannerandlearnedsiteengineering.DougmovedwithhisfamilytoHiltonHeadIslandin1984andstartedhisdesign/buildlandscapeconstructioncompanyin1987.Heisstillpracticingtherepart-timeforafewofhisbestclients.Doughasonedaughter,twosons,astepson,andsixgrandchildren.Heisveryinvolvedingenealogy,thehistoryattachedtoit,andenjoysallthingsscientific.

Dot Andres isa"JerseyGirl"born,raisedandeducatedinnorthernNewJersey.ShemovedtoJohnKnoxVillagefromPennington,NewJersey.DotandherlatehusbandChethavebeen"snowbirds"spendingwintersinNewSmyrnaBeachsince1990.AfterattendingRutgers(DouglasCollege)andPrincetonUniversity,DotbeganhercareerwiththeNewJerseyDepartmentofTransportation.Sheretired,after26years,asChiefEngineerofMaintenance—RoadsandBridges.ShehasbeenfortunatetohavetraveledextensivelythroughEuropeandthewesternUnitedStates.Shelovessports,outdooractivitiesandreading.Shevolunteers as a park ranger during the winter monthsatCanaveralSeashoreParkinNewSmyrnaBeach.Dothasadaughter,son,fivegrandkids,andagreat-grandchildscatteredfromFloridatoOregon.ShebelievesherdecisiontomovetoJKVwasagreatone!

Martha Easter wasborninAlabama,abovetheTennesseeRiver.DuringWorldWarIIsheandhersisterweresenttopickcottononalocalfarm.Laborwasscarceandcottonneededtobepicked.Theirfather said he didn’t have a son to send to the war butcottonwasneededforuniformsandhehaddaughterstopickit.Itwasafunexerciseforthegirlsandtheymadeonedollarforeveryhundredpoundstheypicked.AftergraduatingfromAlabamaPolytechnicInstitute(Auburn)in1950withadegreeinHomeEconomics,Marthadevotedherentireworkingcareertopromotingconsumerproductsinvariousbusinesses.In1960,heremployer“loaned”hertotheU.S.GovernmenttosupervisetheKitchenof Today at the World Trade Fair in Zagreb, Croatia, Yugoslavia.Thishelpedsparkalife-longdesireforinternationalvisits.Forpleasure,MarthahastraveledallovertheworldincludingvisitstoPeru,China,Jordan,Egypt,Ukraine,Russia,Britain,aswellastheUnitedStates.ItwasatriptoBoliviaandresultingaltitudesicknessthatreducedherabilitytotravel.Martha’shobbiesincludebridge,genealogy,needleworkandreading.

Joe CotiebecameamechanicalengineeraftercompletingaMaster’sdegreeinAppliedScience.Hiscareerbeganillustratingmaintenancemanualsandlaterdesigninghardwareforradarsystems;theseexperiencesledtohisinterestinart.Joeworksinacrylics,andhispicturesrangefrombirdstolandscapestoabstracts.

In1970,heandhiswifeRobintransferredfromNewYorktoFloridawherehetooknightclassesfortwoyearsattheNortonGalleryinPalmBeach.TheythensettledinPalmCoastfor17yearswhereJoecreatedmanypaintingsforhisfriends.JoeandRobinmovedtoJohnKnoxin2017.Joe,who also builds furniture, volunteers to repair and build whatever is needed at the JKVHobby/Fix-ItShop.RobinandJoearealsoactiveintheJKVVesperChoirandtheStetsonUniversityChoralUnion.JoeisalsoamemberoftheJKVMen’sChorus.

Why does Dave Joybuildmodelships?Asa youngster during WWII, he and his friends madewind-uprubberbandairplanesoutoftissuepaperandbalsawood.Thisbuildinginteresttookalonghiatuswhenhediscoveredsports,girls,andultimately,hiswifeBarbaraandtheirfamilylifeinConnecticut.UponretirementfromStanleyTools,hebeganbuildinglargemodelships.In2012,theJoysmovedtoJohnKnoxVillage.In2014,Davebeganbuildingagain.

Inhiscottage,hecurrentlyhas16shipsencasedinhigh-gradeacryliccaseswhichhealsomakes.Heworksonhisshipsin“fitsandstarts,”dependinguponhismotivation.Davesays,“ComingtoJohnKnoxisthebestmoveIevermadeinmylife!”

To say Sally Fausnight works with a needle is anunderstatement.Atagefive,Sallylearnedtoknitathermother’sknee.Atagenine,herbabysittertaughtherhowtocrochet“aroundtheedgesofhankies”andSallysaysthatshedidnotevenknowthenamesoftheskillsthatshewaslearning.SheattendedtheWilliamsSchoolofNeedleArtinMassachusetts.Eventually,shetaughtclassesinyarnandneedleworkinAkron,Ohio,andbecameadistrictandregionalmanagerforcompaniesspecializinginneedlepoint,crocheting,knittingandallareasofneedlework.Switchingcareers,she owned and ran a sign shop in Longwood, Floridamakingtrafficsignsforthelasttwenty-fiveyears.Threeofherpiecesofneedleartarefeaturedinthisdisplay.

SallyknewimmediatelythatshemadetherightdecisionwhenshemovedtoJohnKnoxfromLongwoodfouryearsago.Sallyinvitesanyone who wants to learn needlework to give heracall.

Don Kehoe decidedtotakeafewartclasseswhen, due to surgery on his knees, he was sidelinedfromhisgolfgame.Havingneverpainted,heatfirstworkedwithoils.Hisnextexperimentswereinacrylic,charcoalsandpastels.Althoughhenolongerpaints,hehasmanyworkswithvividcolorsondisplayinhishome. In New York and on his own at 16, he wrote a letter to the Long Island Daily Press asking iftheycouldgivehimajob.Anavidlearner,hebeganhiscareerasacopyboyat60centsperhourandcloselyobservedthestaffwritersandeditors.HethenworkedatAllstatewhilefreelancingfornewspapers.Ultimately,thisledtoawritingcareerasthe sports writer for Newsday and as a freelancerfortheNew York Times during footballseasons.DonandhiswifeLindahavelivedatJohnKnoxfor14months.TheyvisitedmanyretirementplacesandfinallymovedherefromBluffton,SouthCarolina.Donsays,“LifeatJKVismuchbetterthanweeverexpected,andweloveithere.”

Bob Gerhardt,whogrewupinPhiladelphia,wasintroducedtoartatanearlyagebecausehisauntwasawatercolorist.Afterjoiningthe business world, he began taking adult educationclassesinartbutfoundthathedidnothavethetimetopursuethisinterest.AfterretiringtoTheVillagesin2005,hemetanartteacherwhointroducedhimtocoloredpencilsandgraphite.Hethentriedpastels.Hiscollectionofworksincludesthesemediums,althoughhepreferspastelsbecauseoftheirbrightness.Bobparticularlyenjoysdoingportraits.Inthisgallery,Bobfeaturesaportraitoffriends,agrandmotherandhergrandchild. AgraduateoftheCornellSchoolofBusiness,Bob and his wife JoAnne worked in their financialplanningbusinessinPhiladelphiaandChestertown,Maryland.TheyhavelivedatJohnKnoxforfouryearsandareverycontent.DuringthistimeBobhasalsoservedontheResidents’Council.

Bill Paxton’steacherstoldhismotherthathewasartisticallytalentedwhileattendinggradeschoolinPittsburgh.Sheimmediatelyenrolledhiminartclasses.However,youngBillwasnotinterestedatthattimeanddidnotpursueart.WhenheandhiswifeRuthretiredtoSavannahLakesVillage,SouthCarolina,BillagaintookartclassesattheVillage’sartcenter.Exploringmediums,hedecidedthathelikedacrylicsbecause“Ifyoumessup,youcandooverthetop!”

BillgraduatedfromCarnegieMellonUniversitywithaBachelorofScienceinMechanicalEngineeringandfromKentStatewithamaster’sdegreeinbusiness.After42years,heretiredasthevice-presidentofengineeringforanOhiocompanythatmanufacturesheavyequipmentforthesteelindustry.HeandRuthhavetraveledextensively,andhisrealisticart,whichisdisplayedthroughouttheirhome,includespicturesofYellowstone,SmokyMountainsNationalPark,JacksonHole,theGrandCanyonandmanymore.TheymovedtoJohnKnoxinOctober2017tobeclosertotheirchildren.

Recently,Village Life’sownresidenteditor,LouiseCaccamise,wasawardedtheWilliamJ."Bill"DreggorsAwardbytheWestVolusiaHistoricalSociety.

Theaward,namedafterthehistoricalsociety’sfounder,wascreatedtohonorsomeonewhosebodyofworkfortheWestVolusiaHistoricalSocietyexceedednormalcontributionsandvolunteering.Sinceitsinception,therehavebeenonlyfiverecipients.

Besides being the resident editor of Village Life, Louise volunteers withthepubliclibraryandtheWestVolusiaHistoricalSociety.Sheservedaspresidentofthesocietyin2002,wastheboardsecretaryformanyyearsandcurrentlyservesasamemberofthehistoricalsociety’sboard in addition to serving on its libraryandmuseumcommittees.

Over the years, Louise has written three books pertaining to West Volusiahistory.In1999shewroteEcho’s of Yesterday: A History of the DeLand Area Public Library, 1912-1995;andin2003shepublished The Minutes and Memorials of the Old Settlers of DeLand, Florida, 1882-1926.Hermostrecentbook,Memory Lane,publishedin2013,tracesthehistoryofDeLandstreetnames.Memory Lane is in itssecondprinting. Rosemarygaveherfirstrecitalatage eight wearing anoutfitmadebyherpianistmotherwho started her onpiano.BorninMiami,Oklahoma,Rosemarycomesfromamusicalfamily.OfHungariandescent,shesaidhernameisproperlypronounced“malo–cha-i.”

She began studying the violin when a localmusicstore

advertised30freeviolinlessons.Herparentssentforasmall,fineviolinfromNew York City and arranged for her to studyinTulsa,Oklahoma.Untilshewas16,Rosemarywasdriven200milesroundtripforlessonsinTulsawhichshecontinuedthroughouthighschool.Afterhighschool,sheattendedtheConservatoryofMusicinKansasCity,Missouri,wheresheearnedherBachelorandMastersDegreesinPerformance.“MyfirstjobwaswiththeKansasCityPhilharmonicandIearnedmoneyplayingconcert,radio,andshow‘gigs’,allofwhichweregreatlearningexperiences.Summers,Istudiedwiththerenownedteacherandviolinist,JosefGingold.”

RosemarytookherfirsttriptoNewYorkCityforanauditionwiththeBaltimoreSymphony,washired,andgainedmoreexperience.“IwasconcernedthatImightnotbeabletosupportmyselfperformingandlefttheorchestraforan assistantship at the University of Illinoisforeducationalcredits.Iaccepted

ateachingpositioninPoncaCity,Oklahoma,planningtostayayear,butfoundthestudents’progresssoexcitingthatIremained.Also,IwentforayeartoCambridge,England,onateacher’sexchangebeforereturningtoOklahoma.”

RosemaryreceivedaninvitationfromDr.JosephMaddytoteachattheNationalMusicCampafterheheardherstudentsplay.Later,Dr.MaddyopenedtheprestigiousInterlochenArtsAcademy,ahighschoolwinterboardingfacility,wheresheremainedyearround.Rosemarytaughtviolin,coachedchambermusic,andwasthecoordinatorofstringsfortheacademy.Besidesteaching,RosemarywasbusyperformingasamemberoftheInterlochenStringQuartet,TheLittleSymphonyOrchestraofChicago,theNorthwoodOrchestra,severalBachFestivals,andothers.

In2007theycametoJohnKnoxVillageandenjoyedswimmingandgolfinguntilMaryJanebecameillandwastransferredtoMajesticOakswhereRosemaryvisitshereverymorning.

TheDeLandHighSchoolAvanteGardeDancerswerealsoonhandtohelpthestaffincelebratingthemilestoneday.

Mrs.Threlkeldcanoftenbefoundinherroomgracefullyapplyinghermakeup,combingherhairorputtingonherpearls.Rarelydoessheleaveherroomwithoutlookingherbest.

Mrs. Threlkeld is a graceful woman full of wisdom, integrity, and character!

Maddie Miller said she is aseven-year-oldYorkieandPomeranianmix.HerMomPhyllistakesMaddietoDOGAexerciseatthePavilion,butMaddiewouldrather sneak out to go into theBiedermann’shousenextdoor.Oneluckydayshe found a dog bone and broughtithometoenjoy.

ButtercupcametoPhyllisandLarryMillerfiveyearsagoafterLarrywasbrowsingapetrescuewebsiteandfoundapictureofthehandsomekitty.HetoldPhyllis,“Iwantthatcat.”RescuepromisedButtercupcouldbereturnedifhedidn’tgetalongwithMaddie.ButtercuptoldmethefirstdayhewaswiththeMillershejumpedfromtheirsecond-floorrailingtothefirstfloorbuttheykepthimanyway.Sometimelastyearhelearnedhowtogetuponthetoiletseattopracticehis“aim”.

Buttons Bourgoin had been visitingMookieScapicchiohereatJKVforaboutthreeyearswhenMomRhoda,DadBill,andshedecidedtomovein.Buttonssaysshe’sarescuedten-year-oldChihuahuamixandhasbeenlivingwithMomandDadforaboutsixyears.Shesometimesgetsstubborn during her walks and plants her feet so she canbecarriedhome.

MaryHoilestalkedtomeoverthephonebecauseCalliePisveryshyandhidesfromvisitors.ThePinhernamestandsforPOOF;shedisappearsinapoofwhenthedoorbellrings.MaryandPaulineLackiesayCallieisthemostlovingcattheyhaveeverhad.She’sbetweenoneandthreeyearsold;Calliewasfoundpregnant and was fostered at SpringOaksAnimalCareCenteruntil she had her babies and wasspayed.MaryandPaulinevisitedSpringOakstotellthemthey were going to be bringing a newkittytotheclinicwhentheyfoundone,andtheywenthomewithCallieP.She’sstillgettingusedtohernewhomesinceshe’sonlybeenthereafewmonths,but every day she spends a little moretimewithhernewmomsand plays with her toys instead ofhiding.MaybemymomandIwillseeherinthewindowsomemorning,whenshegetsbrave.
