THE ACADEMIC PROCESSIONThe centuries-old pageantry of the academic procession comes from ancient tradition, rooted in the early universities. The solemn procession before you is the college’s way of giving depth and distinction to the commencement of these men and women.

Academic caps, gowns and hoods date back to the twelfth century, developing gradually from the long flowing robes that the teachers wore to protect themselves from the cold of the medieval buildings. Since the scholars of the time were usually clerics, their robes differed little from those used by the church orders. Slowly, certain styles were designated for the universities and these, with minor modifications, are the costumes worn today. Hoods were originally fashioned after the monk’s cowl; the mortarboard cap, with its tassels, evolved from the skull caps of the scholar-monks.

In France, where the degree program probably began, wearing the cap and gown marked the for- mal admission of the “licentiate” to the body of masters. In our country, caps and gowns have been used since colonial times. Columbia University, or King’s College as it was then called, began this custom at an early date. New York University, the University of Pennsylvania and others followed, and in 1894 a com- mission representing the leading American colleges met to discuss academic ceremonies. A year later, the intercollegiate code was adopted. Today, more than 700 colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Turkey and others follow this code. Standard styles in caps, gowns, and hoods for Doctors, Masters and Bachelors were established.

In recent years, distinctively colored gowns have been authorized for specific schools. For example, the Columbia gown is slate gray, the New York University gown is violet, the Yale gown is blue, the Harvard is crimson and The City University of New York gown is navy blue. The hoods worn over the shoulders and down the backs of the members of faculty reveal the degrees and institutions of the wearers. The velvet binding or edging is distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains. The silk lining of the hood is in the color or colors of the institution granting the degree. The shortest hood is the Bachelor’s; the longest and broadest is the Doctor’s; and the Master’s is midway between these in size. In the colors of the colleges, there is much duplication and it would be useless to identify them. However, there is a standard color for the subject and the degree, indicated by the velvet edging which shows in front and over the shoulders, and the most common of these are given below:

THE MACE

The mace, a traditional part of every academic ceremony, is a heavy staff used as a symbol of authority. It is carried by the leader of the procession, who is referred to as the Mace Bearer or the Grand Marshal.

In early Roman days the mace, carried by officers called lictors, consisted of a bundle of rods known as fasces that showed the authority of the magistrates. In medieval times, the mace was wielded in legislative assemblies to protect officials.

In the United States House of Representatives the mace is about three feet long, made of ebony rods with a band of silver. A silver globe stands on a protruding rod, and a silver eagle with wings outspread sits on top of the globe.

The John Jay College mace was created in 1968 by Anthony T. Muratore, a student and police detective. It is 29 inches long, in blue and gold, and bears the seal of the College and the seal of The City University

of New York at its pinnacle.

THE HONORARY DEGREESJohn Jay College of Criminal Justice honors two distinguished individuals who have enlightened society by their commitment to the principles of academic excellence and understanding for all.

KIMBERLÉ WILLIAMS CRENSHAW

Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw is the embodiment of a fierce advocate for justice. A Distinguished Professor at the UCLA School of Law and a Professor at Columbia Law School, Crenshaw is an American civil rights advocate and a leading scholar of critical race theory.

A graduate of Cornell University who holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School and an LL.M. from the University of Wisconsin Law School, in 1996 Crenshaw co-founded the African American Policy Forum, a nonprofit information clearinghouse that seeks to build bridges between scholarly research and public discourse in addressing inequality and discrimination, and advancing and expanding racial justice, gender equality, and the indivisibility of all human rights, both in the United States and internationally.

Crenshaw introduced the theory of intersectionality to feminist theory in the 1980’s, based on her realization that the gender aspect of race was extremely underdeveloped. Intersectional theory explores how overlapping or intersecting social identities, particularly minority identities, relate to systems and structures of oppression or discrimination. Crenshaw noted that antidiscrimination laws consider gender and race separately, and thus African-American women and other women of color experience overlapping forms of discrimination. In 2011, while on the faculty of Columbia Law School, she founded the Center for Intersectionality and Social Policy Studies, which she also serves as director. Internationally renowned for her work in civil rights law and critical race theory, Crenshaw’s contributions to legal scholarship have changed the landscape of law school curriculum for the better.

Her work has been published in the Harvard Law Review, the National Black Law Journal, the Stanford Law Review and the Southern California Law Review, and her scholarship continues to invigorate such areas of study such as law and society, political science, criminal justice, and gender studies, among others. She is the author or editor of numerous seminal works in her field, including Critical Race Theory: The Key Writings That Formed the Movement (1996), Reaffirming Racism: The Faulty Logic of Colorblindness, Remedy and Diversity (2013), and the forthcoming Black Girls Matter: Pushed Out, Over Policed and Under Protected.

Crenshaw assisted the legal team representing Anita Hill at the U.S. Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and her scholarly work has been cited as influential in the drafting of the Constitution of South Africa. Her numerous professional accolades and honors include the Outstanding Scholar Award from the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation, a Fulbright Chair for Latin America in Brazil, an in-residence fellowship at the Center of Advanced Behavioral Studies at Stanford University, and in 2015, Ms. Magazine’s “No. 1 Most Inspiring Feminist” award.

Crenshaw’s critical thinking and cutting-edge scholarship have helped our nation and our college community grapple with overlapping issues of social identity, race and gender, and their relationship to dominant social and political structures. For her continuing contributions that have helped to make the United States a richer, more vibrant and more just place, John Jay College of Criminal Justice confers upon Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw the degree of Doctor of Civil Law, honoris causa.

EVE ENSLERDoctor of Letters

Playwright, author and activist Eve Ensler is a hero, icon and friend to those who want to have a personal and political impact on stopping violence against women and girls in the global arena. She has dedicated her body of work to the issue of gender justice and, like all great champions of justice, Ensler consistently links oppression to poverty, lack of civil rights, war and desecration of the environment.

Ensler earned her bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College in Vermont, where she first emerged as a militant feminist. It would be 20 years later that she took the world by storm with her critically lauded and award-winning play “The Vagina Monologues,” which she first performed in a small theater in lower Manhattan in 1996. The play earned her the Obie Award for Best New Play and a Guggenheim Fellowship Award in Playwriting. Ensler’s work moved from the small stage to local stages all over the country and, ultimately to the world stage, with performances in 48 languages in more than 140 countries.

Ensler, whose literary output includes dozens of plays, books and films, used the experience of performing “The Vagina Monologues” to create V-Day, a global activist movement to stop violence against women and girls. V-Day raises funds — more than $100 million to date — and awareness through annual benefit productions of Ensler’s signature work.

Since 1998, the year she also founded V-Day, Ms. Ensler has led a writing group at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women, which was portrayed in the documentary “What I Want My Words to Do to You.” In 2012, she helped create One Billion Rising, a global protest campaign to end violence, and promote justice and gender equality for women, while exposing the culture of violence that grants impunity to perpetrators all over the world.

Her memoir In the Body of the World, published in 2013, is the very definition of how the personal is always political. The work has been hailed as “a ravishing book of revelation and healing, lashing truths and deep emotion, courage and perseverance, compassion and generosity.”

Ensler’s literary output and tenacious activism earned her the Isabelle Stevenson Award at the 2011 Tony Awards, which recognizes an individual from the theater community who has made a substantial contribution of volunteered time and effort on behalf of humanitarian, social service, or charitable organizations. She has also been honored by such organizations as the Women’s Prison Association, Planned Parenthood, and Amnesty International, and in 2011 she was named as one of Newsweek magazine’s “150 Women Who Changed the World.” She embodies Margaret Mead’s famous assertion that one person can make a difference.

Eve Ensler serves as an inspiring role model for John Jay students, many of whom wonder if it is possible for their voices to be heard, their experiences to be validated, their life missions for justice to be actualized. For her groundbreaking efforts as a writer and activist in the effort to rein in gender-based violence, John Jay College of Criminal Justice confers upon Eve Ensler the degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA NATIONAL ANTHEM

O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,

What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming,

Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight

O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,

O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
