THE GOOD NEWSDear Friends,

This weekend Queen of Heaven Parish celebrates our patronal feast, The Queenship of Mary! What an awesome title for Mary, the mother of Jesus, the mother of the Church, and our mother. How did this Marian title come to be and what does it mean for us?

Marian titles have developed over the long history of the Church. I believe there are more than 100 titles for Mary. But one title in particular – Queen – encapsulates them all. The earliest record of the queenship title are said to have originated with the Church Father St. Ephrem in the 4th century, when he referred to Mary as “Lady” and “Queen.” Scripturally, the queen image of Mary is described by John in the Book of Revelation with great awe: “And a great sign appeared in heaven: A

woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” Scholars believe the twelve stars on her crown represent the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles. In Jewish culture it would have been expected to call the mother of the king – queen. Mary shares in reigning in heaven with Jesus her son as Queen of Heaven because of her nature here on earth as his mother, the mother of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

So how does Mary exercise this queenship title? By watching over us, her children. Children who turn to her in prayer, to thank her or to ask her for her motherly protection and her heavenly help, perhaps after having lost our way, or when we are oppressed by suffering or anguish in this life. In serenity or in life’s darkness let us address Mary, entrusting ourselves to her continuous intercession so that she may obtain for us from her Son every grace and mercy we need for our pilgrimage through this world.

The devotion to Our Lady is an important element of the spiritual life. Think of the Assumption and the Coronation in the glorious mysteries of the Rosary. In our prayers let us not fail to address her with trust. Mary will not fail to intercede for us with her Son. Looking at her, let us imitate her faith, her full availability to God’s plan of love, her generous acceptance of Jesus. Let us learn how to live from Mary. Mary is the Queen of Heaven who is close to God, but she is also the mother who is close to each one of us, who loves us, and listens to our voice. St. Maximilian Kolbe whose feast is the Vigil of the Assumption (August 14) said this about loving Mary. “Never be afraid of loving the Blessed Virgin too much. You can never love her more than Jesus did.” So, friends, with great joy we raise our minds and hearts on this our patronal feast and ask the Queen of Heaven to wrap her mantle of protection over this great parish. May we always be a beacon of light in a world troubled by stormy seas. Amen.

Hail Holy Queen, pray for us!

Best,Steve D

KIDS’ BULLETINThe Kids’ Bulletin can (again) be picked up in the Gathering Space before or after Mass for all children to take home with them. We are also posting a link to the Kids’ Bulletin every week on our website for families who are not physically attending

Mass yet to download and print out at home. The link will be on our main webpage each weekend at www.queenofheavenparish.org.

FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTION STARTING SEPTEMBER 2020

Please join our First Saturday Devotion each month starting September 5, 2020, at the 8:30 a.m. Mass, followed by the Rosary prayed before the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Confessions will be offered after Mass.

In 1925, our Blessed Mother Mary said to Sister Lucia, “I promise to assist at the hour of death with all the graces necessary for salvation, all those whom on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, go to Confession and receive Holy Communion, recite the Rosary, and keep me company for a quarter of an hour while meditation on the mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.”

PRO-LIFE NEWS

A Perfect Gift – Part 3PerfectionMany parents want perfect children, and our culture is obsessed with superficial perfection. Photos are airbrushed, and social media depicts seemingly perfect lives. However, God calls us to seek perfection not in

appearance or abilities, but in love.

Christians know what perfect love looks like – Jesus offering himself on the Cross. Love in a family where one member has a serious disability may look unappealing from the outside. Indeed, love in any family is messy; there are faces to wipe and sacrifices to make. It’s natural to fear that such sacrifices will require too much, but this is where the deep mystery of sacrificial love becomes apparent.

In our family, we have found that our hearts, rather than being weighed down, have become larger. Caring for Charlie has given us more patience, more compassion, and more love for others – especially those on the outskirts of society, whom Pope Francis so often calls us to care for.

AUGUST 22-23, 2020Catholic schools make a profound impact on a child’s life and now, more than ever, children need the faith and values present in our Catholic schools. You can help provide more opportunities for students to obtain a Catholic education. This weekend, a special appeal, the Faith and Values Appeal for Education, will be held across the diocese to raise funds to help provide tuition assistance to needy students and their families right here in our diocese. Please be generous in your support of Catholic school students. Envelopes for this special appeal are included with your parish envelopes. You can make a secure donation online at www.CatholicCommunity.org/education or call Karen Joyce at 800-869-6525, ext. 1910.

ST. FRANCIS DE SALES – ROSARY FOR OUR NATION

Our country needs so many prayers right now – from the damages done by COVID-19, the riots and the lootings, the division among people. We have so much to pray for! For nine Tuesday evenings beginning September 1st at 6:00 p.m., St. Francis de Sales (4019 Manchester Road, Akron, OH) will have a public recitation of the Rosary and private prayers specifically for the healing of our country. Be assured social distancing requirements are in place. And please join us for our 6:30 p.m. Mass following the Rosary.

BAPTISM CLASSESThe Diocese of Cleveland requires that parents of children to be baptized receive instruction regarding the nature of the Sacrament and what role they, as first instructors in the faith for their children, will play in their child’s faith formation. Normally our parish offers quarterly in-person classroom instructions to meet this requirement. Due to the meeting restrictions that we’re following, these classes have been temporarily halted. If you are planning to have your child baptized between now and the end of the year and have not attended one of the instruction classes in the past five years please contact Deacon Steve at [email protected] or the parish office at [email protected] to make other arrangements. Thank you, Deacon Steve.
