ebrating Memorial Day and honor our

fallen military at various hospice loca-

tions in Wake County on Friday, May

27th and on Monday, May 30th. we will

honor those who gave all with our 24th

annual wreath laying ceremony at the

Capitol Grounds in Raleigh. Lt. Gen.

Robert Ruark (USMC) will be our

guest speaker.

are making all of these activities and

events a huge success for the people

of this community and the Tar Heel

Detachment. It was great to have Kirt

Cross from the Wounded Warrior Bat-

talion East, Camp Lejeune as our

guest speaker at our meeting. Another

great turnout at the meeting—34 Ma-

A s I mentioned in the April Scut-

tlebutt article we were gearing

up for a lot of events in May. But I

didn’t thoroughly realize just how

packed the month will be. It is truly

going to be an exciting month for all

concerned.

However, before I go further, I wish

to express a big Thank You to those

that made the breakfast fundraiser a

success. Especially a big thanks to Ed

Gleason, Phil Hemming, Suellen

Beaulieu, Walt Atkinson, John Staley,

Angel Menendez and Juan Munoz for

leading the way. They accounted for

over 80% of the funds raised.

Congratulations to our Capitol City

Young Marines and the staff lead by

Doug Smith for the completion of the

13 week basic training culminating

with the graduation ceremony held

April 18th. A highlight of the evening

was the presence of former Young

Marine Emily Rando who the week

before graduated from Parris Island

#1 in the Battalion. It was a pleasure

to make her the first to become a

member of the Tar Heel Detachment

under the new guidelines set by the

League National Headquarters for ac-

tive duty Marines. During the month

of May we will honor 14 new Eagle

Scouts at their Court of Honor. We

will present the sword to top graduat-

ing Marine at the NC State NROTC

graduation ceremony. We will pre-

sent awards to members of the Cary

High NJROTC at their annual ban-

quet. We will also present the top

graduating senior with a $1,000 schol-

arship.

W e have all seen the pictures of the

perfectly aligned white tombstones

that spread over the many acres of

land sprawling out around the Arlington House

in Virginia. Many

of us hve had the

privilege to visit

this hallowed

ground. The first

large observance

of Decoration Day

was held on the

veranda of the Ar-

lington House following the American civil war.

The graves of fallen civil war veterans would be

decorated with flowers to remember their sacri-

fice. After World War II that day became known

as Memorial Day. There are many observances

around the country as we remember those brave

patriots. Many of these ceremonies take place at

momuments, memorials and in cemeteries.

Our great nation stands year after year because

of the brave mem and women who are willing to

lay everything on the line to protect it. Many of

those brave souls will make the ultimate sacrifice

to protect our freedoms and the American way of

life. A recent article I was reading showed that

number to be around 1,345,000 men and women

who have given their lives in the defense of our

country since 1776.

As Memorial Day approaches again this year we

should remember their sacrifice and the families

that were left behind. Therefore we pray:

Supreme Commandant, in whose hands are the

living and dead, we give honor to all who have

given their lives in the service of our country to

safeguard the United States of America. Grant

our mercy and the light of your presence, that the

good work you have begun in them be perfected

and continued in us. We also ask that you com-

fort those who are left here on earth in their ab-

sence. Amen.

Young Marine Alumni Earns "Chesty" Puller Re-

cruit Company Honor Graduate Award

T he Tar Heel Detachment #733 who supports the Capital

City Young Marines of Raleigh, North Carolina, would

like to announce the April 2016 graduation of Emily

Rando from United States Marine Corps recruit training at Parris

Island.

Rando graduated from 4th Recruit

Training Battalion (Oscar Company,

Platoon 2012), which boasts all-female

recruits and is run by female drill in-

structors and officers. Each of the

three companies within 4th Recruit

Training Battalion - November, Oscar,

and Papa - typically houses two 50-60 recruit platoons.

Rando earned Honor Graduate for her company. She was pro-

moted to PFC and presented the 'Chesty' Puller Recruit Company

Honor Graduate Award. This prestigious award is associated

with Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller, the most decorated Marine

in U.S. history, and is only given to the top male and top female

of each graduating class.

"The 'Chesty' Puller Recruit Company Honor Graduate Award,"

writes the Marine Corps Association, "is presented to the Marine

of each graduating company who demonstrated the highest po-

tential for future leadership and responsibility in the Marine

Corps."

"The Young Marines gave me a skill set to help me not only with

my Marine Corps career," said Rando, "but my future."

Rando was with the Capitol City Young Marines for less than

two years before graduating but quickly became an integral and

well-liked leader. She truly set an example for all others to fol-

low by her selflessness. Though she could have finished mile

runs first, she was often found near the back motivating those

who were struggling. We are extremely proud of Rando and

thankful that the Young Marines program

could prepare her in some small way for the

honorable path she has chosen.

Upon graduation, she returned to Raleigh

where she was recognized at a Young Ma-

rines ceremony where Commandant John

Dilday presented her with the Detachment's

first Active Duty Membership.

An Army officer sums up what makes

(Excerpt from DEATH GROUND: TODAY’S AMERICAN INFANTRY IN BATTLE)

W hat makes Marine infantry special? Asking the question that misses the most fundamental point

about the United States Marine Corps. In the Marines, every-

one–sergeant, mechanic, cannoneer, supply man, clerk, aviator, cook–

is a rifleman first. The entire Corps, all 170,000 or so on the active

rolls, plus the reserves, are all infantry. All speak the language of the

rifle and bayonet, of muddy boots and long, hot marches. It’s never us

and them, only us. That is the secret of the Corps.”

“If Army infantry amounts to a stern monastic order standing apart, on

the edge of the wider secular soldier world, Marine infantry more re-

sembles the central totem worshipped by the entire tribe. Marines

have specialized, as have all modern military organizations. And de-

spite the all-too-real rigors of boot camp, annual rifle qualification,

and high physical standards, a Marine aircraft crew chief or radio re-

pairman wouldn’t make a good 0311 on a squad assault. But those

Marine technical types know that they serve the humble grunt, the

man who will look the enemy in the eye within close to belly-ripping

range. Moreover, all Marines think of themselves as grunts at heart,

just a bit out of practice at the moment. That connection creates a

great strength throughout the Corps.”

“It explains why Marine commanders rou-

tinely, even casually, combine widely dis-

parate kinds of capabilities into small

units….Marines send junior officers and

NCOs out from their line rifle companies

and expect results. They get them, too.”

“Even a single Marine has on call the firepower of the air wing, the

Navy, and all of the United States. Or at least he thinks he does. A

Marine acts accordingly. He is expected to take charge, to improvise,

to adapt, to overcome. A Marine gets by with ancient aircraft (the

ratty C-46E Frog, for example), hand-me-down weapons (such as the

old M-60 tanks used in the Gulf War), and whatever else he can bum

off the Army or cajole out of the Navy. Marines get the job done re-

gardless, because they are Marines. They make a virtue out of neces-

sity. The men, not the gear, make the difference. Now and again, the

Marines want to send men, not bullets.”

“This leads to a self-assurance that sometimes comes across as disre-

gard for detailed staff-college quality planning and short shrift for

high-level supervision. Senior Army officers in particular sometimes

find the Marines amateurish, cavalier, and overly trusting in just wad-

ing in and letting the junior leaders sort it out. In the extreme, a few

soldiers have looked at the Corps as some weird, inferior, ersatz

ground war establishment, a bad knockoff of the real thing. ‘A small,

bitched-up army talking Navy lingo,’ opined Army Brigadier General

Frank Armstrong in one of the most brutal inter-service assessments.

That was going too far. But deep down, many Army professionals

tend to wonder about the Marines. Grab a defended beach? Definite-

ly. Seize a hill? Sure, if you don’t mind paying a little. But take

charge of a really big land operation? Not if we can help it.”

“Anyone who has watched an amphibious landing unfold would be

careful with that kind of thinking. The Marines actually have a lot in

common with their elite Army infantry brothers, if not with all the

various Army headquarters and service echelons. True, Marine orders

do tend to be, well…brief. But so do those of the airborne, the air

assault, the light-fighters, and the Rangers, for the same good reason:

Hard, realistic training teaches soldiers how to fight by doing, over

and over, so they need not keep writing about it, regurgitating basics

every time. More enlightened soldiers consider that goodness.

A three-inch thick order, a big CP, and lots of meeting do not

victory make. The Marines consciously reject all that.”

“A Corps infused with a rifleman ethos has few barriers to intra-

service cooperation. The Army talks a great deal about com-

bined arms and does it down to about battalion level, often with

great wailing and gnashing of the teeth. Marines do it all the

way down to the individual Marine. Soldiers have defined mili-

tary occupational specialties and guard their prerogatives like a

union shop stewards. Finance clerks don’t do machine guns.

Mechanics skip foot marches to fix trucks. Intell analysts work

in air-conditioned trailers; they don’t patrol.

Marines, though, are just Marines. They all consider themselves

trigger pullers. They even like it, as might be expected of an

elite body.

A s I write this note for the May Scuttlebutt ! The 1st week-end of the month is coming to a close and some of us must

return to work again. By the time you read this we will have had our meeting and you will be reading this and other articles put together by our Editor and Past Commandant Suellen Beaulieu. The Golden Corral Breakfast Fund Raiser is in the books. I was out of town and was not able to attend, but know all who went had a Great Time. This will be a busy month for our Detachment between Eagle Courts of Honor , Fund Raiser at the Walmart in Fuquay Varina and our, “ Special Yearly Wreath Lying at the Capital “, where we will hang out with our Friends, as well as Honoring our Brothers and Sisters in Arms who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we have and enjoy to this Day. Frank Mansfield is doing better and at this time not sure h e will be able to attend the Wreath Laying, but then we have a whole month ahead and I hope things change and he will be able to attend. John and Gayle are gearing up for the Spring Picnic on Saturday May14 starting at 1600. They are both Great Host and Hostess to each of us! I just received my part time assignment at the PNC Arena and found I will have to be thinking of all of you as I am working from 1500 till Midnight that day. I will be calling and asking for your help on May 28th to work at our WalMart Fund Raiser from 1000 till approximately 1600. Setup will be from 0930 to 1000. This is the Saturday before Memorial Day. Monday May 30th is Memorial Day invite your friends , relatives and neighbors to attend the Ceremony. As for us Marine Corps Leaguers it is, “ ALL HANDS ON DECK “ !! Setup Starts at 0930 with ceremony starting at 1100 till Approximately 1200 , Luncheon to follow. If your a New member you can wear something Marine and join us! Wearing the Red Cover you are considered in Uniform. For those members who have the white short sleeve shirts you can wear your USMC ribbons and badges or Only MCL ribbons. Commandant Dilday authorized the short sleeves versus the Red Blazers due to the anticipated warm weather. Have your friends and family bring camp chairs to sit on. The Capital City Young Marines will be walking around the crowd distributing MCL Roses and collecting donations. We can always count on our Young Marines the same way they can count on us being there for them. Again this year we will have a booth with free giveaways! If you have USMC items you wish to part with bring them. Just let me know in advance so I will know how much space we will need. Walter always does a ”Great Job“! He could sure use more help, especially pass-ing out information on the MCL and getting complete contact information from those Marines that are interested in what we are doing. 2nd NC Regimental Drill Competition in Charlotte. The

Squad Drill Team was young and did their best and showed

great effort and heart. The Color Guard was impressive among

many other very outstanding Color Guard teams and brought a

Minutes May 4, 2016

Opening ceremony was held at 1903 hours at the Christ the King Lutheran Church in Cary, NC. The meeting was conducted by

Commandant John Dilday. There were 34 in attendance

Recognition of Guests. The Commandant welcomed all members and wished them a great new year. He recognized the follow-

ing guests: Major Kirk Cross, Gerald Smith and Alfred Peavy.

Roll Call of Officers: PRESENT except as noted: John Dilday, Commandant; Bruce Goeden, Sr. Vice Commandant; Jr. Vice Commandant, Tyrone Ashe; Judge Advocate,

Applications for new members. There were two applications for membership: Bryan Daniels and Kevin Kosuda. The paymas-

ter reported that he had completed applications and DD 214 and membership payment for both applicants. A motion was

made by Earl Linthicum and seconded by Suellen Beaulieu to accept Marine Daniels and Kosuda as members into the de-

tachment. Motion carried. Inductions of the new members will be held next month.

Meeting Protocol. DVC John Staley reminded the Detachment of the protocol of the MCL conduct of meetings and other basic

information.

Major KirK Cross, XO of the Wounded Warrior East Battalion Camp LeJeune spoke to the detachment about the Bn. Mission:

welfare of the troops and their families. Major Cross told of the unit’s organization and Chain of Command and encourage

members to visit.

Minutes of Previous Meeting: The minutes of 6 April, 2016 were published in the April Scuttlebutt. A motion was made by

Mike Snyder and seconded by Randel Rempfer to accept the April minutes. Motion passed.

Budget Presentation. Budget and Finance Committee John Staley presented the detachment’s 2016-17 budget. A motion to

accept the budget was made by Mitzi Manning and seconded by James White. Motion passed

Reports: Paymaster: report was submitted and approved pending audit by voice vote. Balance check book is $2966.41, CD Bal-

ance $2134.86, total available $4951.27. Motion to approve paymasters report as presented subject to audit was made by

Suellen Beaulieu and seconded by John Staley to accept the report subject to audit. Motion approved.

ated on April 18th. Wake Co vet council legislative liason keeps us informed about the latest on Capitol Hill. One con-

cern for future retirees is that some Congress are trying to change the benefit package of retirees. Big concern.

tachment. Total to the detachment $89.00

Eagle Scouts: David Gardener Eagle COH’s held since beginning of the year is 14. We will have 14 during the month of

May.

Pistol Shoot: Toby Roberts reported that there were 11 members/family/friends at the pistol shoot in April. The next pistol

shoot is May 18th. All are welcome.



Unfinished Business: Update on Memorial Day. Tyrone Ashe reports that planning for the event is in place. Set up to start at 9:30 AM and the

program to begin at 11 AM. Toby Roberts was able to secure Lt Gen Robert Ruark from the Pentagon as our guest

speaker. Since Tabacco Road is undergoing renovations, the detachment looked at two other locations for the Memorial

Day Luncheon. After discussion, a motion was made by Suellen Beaulieu and seconded by James White to have our

luncheon at Hibernian Irish Pub in Raleigh. Motion carried.

Pistol Raffle. Earl Linthicum reports that the tickets sales are progressing along. Announced that the pistol and gift certifi-

cate have been paid off. All sales here forward will be available to support the programs we support.

Breakfast fundraiser was held at the Golden Corral in Fuquay on April 23rd . The profit from the Community Breakfast

was $1245.00

We are still looking for help of a few Marines to assist as Color Guard at Memorial Day Celebration on May 27th at vari-

ous Hospice Wake County facilities. Please participate and answer the call when our Commandant calls.

NC Department State Convention to be held June 10th-12th in Gastonia with banquet on Saturday evening June 11th. All

are invited to attend

Thanks to the efforts of James White, there will be a fundraiser at City BBQ in Cary on May 19th all day long. Those

who wish to participate should hand in their fundraising coupon (or electronic form on their phone) to the cashier. The

Detachment will receive 25% of the proceeds of the cost of the meals tallied. City BBQ in Cary is located at 1305 Kil-

daire Farm Road. If you need a form, copy it from the Scuttlebutt or contact John Dilday, Commandant.

Rose Fund raiser will be held at the Walmart in Fuquay Varina on May 28th from 9:30AM until 4:00PM Volunteers needed.
