“Through words and concepts we are
now continually tempted to think of
things as being simpler than they are.”

• (Boris) London’s high streets are the lifeblood of the city and at
the heart of the communities they serve
• It is hoped the project will mirror the success of Exhibition Road
•What ‘success’ is that?
• Hundreds of safety railings have been removed as ‘unnecessary
obstructions’ that leave pedestrians feeling ‘penned in’
•Cyclists have complained they have nowhere to park their bikes
•That’s supposed to make it more safe?
• The eastbound traffic lane in Parkway will be removed
•What does that mean for cycle access?
• A flower stand and newsagent will be taken away
•“All very nice, but we got our wedding flowers from that stand!”

The biggest mistake is that we called it a ‘Shared Space’
It used to be an over-engineered concrete monstrosity
Miles better - 100% - than it was before
The area around the fountains is fantastic
Footfall increased ten-fold!
Such a great improvement - looks fantastic
More space given back to the people for them to enjoy
So much better… more pleasant… less clutter… clean
Much better for children
Feels a lot safer and is a lot cleaner
New ‘illuminations’ are great
Nobody would want it to go back to how it was

“People either confer use on streets and spaces and make them successes – or else
withhold use and doom them to failure.”
