JOHN 1:9-18• The true light, which gives light to everyone, was

coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth…

JOHN 1:9-18• (John bore witness about him, and cried out,

"This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.'") For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.

Elton John"I think Jesus was a compassionate,

super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems. On the

cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be

loving and forgiving

WOULD BE ALL THAT DIFFERENT FROM ME.

UnknownI’ve discovered that the less some people know about Christ the more they like Him. The baby in

the manger touches even the most cynical soul who has long since given up on religion. The secularist who is bent on reforming society quotes selected

verses from the Sermon on the Mount with reverence. And the religious types use Him as their example of humility, sacrifice, and basic goodness. He is worthy to be spoken about in hushed tones.

He is, say some, the first among equals. Yet in all this He is often dammed by faint praise

JOHN 1:14a• And the Word became flesh and dwelt among

us,…

Page 8: JOHN 1:9-18

MacArthurHe entered the realm of those who are time and space creatures and experienced life as it is for those He created.

Philippians 2:5-8

• –Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

JOHN 6:38• For I have come down from heaven, not to do

my own will but the will of him who sent me.

Page 11: JOHN 1:9-18

LucadoHe looks anything but a king. His face is prunish and red. His cry, though strong and healthy, is still the helpless and piercing cry of a baby. And he is absolutely dependent upon Mary for his well-being…This baby had overlooked the universe. These rags keeping him warm were the robes of eternity. His golden throne room had been abandoned in favor of a dirty sheep pen. And worshipping angels had been replaced with kind but bewildered shepherds

Page 12: JOHN 1:9-18

Luke 1:35• And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit

will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God

Page 13: JOHN 1:9-18

Luke 2:4-7• And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the

town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn

JOHN 1:18• No one has ever seen God; the only God, who

is at the Father’s side, he has made him known

Page 17: JOHN 1:9-18

JOHN 6:46• not that anyone has seen the Father except he

who is from God; he has seen the Father

Page 18: JOHN 1:9-18

Exodus 33:18-20• Moses said, "Please show me your glory." And

he said, "I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name 'The LORD.' And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. But," he said, "you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live."

Page 19: JOHN 1:9-18

JOHN 14:9• Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so

long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

Page 20: JOHN 1:9-18

JOHN 1:16• For from his fullness we have all received,

grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ

Page 21: JOHN 1:9-18

Acts 13:38-39• – Let it be known to you therefore, brothers,

that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses

Page 22: JOHN 1:9-18

Galatians 2:16• yet we know that a person is not justified by

works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified

Page 23: JOHN 1:9-18

Hebrews 10:1,3• For since the law has but a shadow of the

good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near… But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year

Page 24: JOHN 1:9-18

Galatians 3:24• Therefore the Law has become our tutor to

lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. (NASB)

Page 25: JOHN 1:9-18

John 8:31-32• So Jesus said to the Jews who had

believed him, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

H. Ironside• Grace is the very opposite of merit…

Grace is not only undeserved favor, but it is favor shown to the one who has deserved the very opposite.

Page 27: JOHN 1:9-18

Ephesians 2:8-9• For by grace you have been saved

through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
