RESEARCH My research and teaching focuses on engineering as an innovation in P-16 education, policy of P-16 STEM education particularly pertaining to women and underrepresented minorities, engineering ‘habits of mind’, particulalry problem solving and empathy and care, efficacy of problem-based learning environments in engineering and engineering in the “wild” – researching how practicing engineers solve problems compared to problem solving techniques taught at university. In addition, I research the use of cyberphysical systems (3D printing and robotics) in K-12 Education.

TEACHING / ADVISING / MENTORSHIPEXPERIENCE

I have taught in higher education environments for over 15 years. I have taught courses in education: educational technology and advanced research methods. I have taught courses in engineering: first-year engineering, cognitive engineering, Engineering education policy, and product design and development. At Purdue, Texas A&M and University of Missorui, I have started and directed the UPRISE (Undergraduate Pre-College Research in STEM Education) Academy, in which I mentor and provide undergraduate students with research, service and industry experiences. Over the last seven years, UPRISE employed over 50 students from 15 disciplines to support research projects. The work is focused on: (1) Research in early STEM education; (2) Product development of educational manipulatives and toys and (3) Outreach into schools, daycares, teacher professional development sessions and conferences. Undergraduate students have been co-authors on two journal publications, 10 proceedings paper sand over 10 presentations. Ph.D. and M.S. thesis committees chaired Masters (Chaired – Thesis option): 9 Masters (Chaired – non-thesis option): 7 Ph.D. (Chair/Co-Chair): 12 Ph.D. (On committee): 14 (including 1 in Canada; 4 in Malaysia) Postdoctoral scholars mentored: 9

Short courses and workshops taught Over 75 professional development workshops for teachers, counselors and school administrators on STEM education, recruitment and career counseling
