Why study Economics?
▪ You want to understand how markets, governments, businesses, societies, and other
organizations work, interact, and decide while facing limited resources.

unemployment, health care, education, and many more.

Our Master’s degree program in Economics
▪ Offers students advanced training in modern economic theories and empirical methods
▪ Teaches the tools needed to conduct practically relevant, applied research in public- and
private-sector companies
Graduates of our Master’s degree program
▪ Have a strong quantitative background and are able to complete new tasks quickly and
independently
▪ Can apply their expert knowledge professionally and solve problems in their field(s) of
expertise
▪ Are able to successfully apply quantitative methods in order to address topical research
questions in economics and beyond

Our Master’s degree program in Economics is designed to prepare graduates for a
wide range of professional careers, for example in
▪ The analytical department of a savings and credit institutions, an investment bank or a
multinational company in Austria and beyond
▪ An EU, OECD, or UNO committee or international organization
▪ The Austrian National Bank (OeNB) or the European Central Bank (ECB)
▪ Economic research institutions in Austria and abroad (e.g. IHS or WIFO)
▪ Universities or universities of applied sciences
▪ Federal and state administration offices (e.g. spatial planning or the Ministry of Finance)
▪ Financial and economic data providers (e.g. Bloomberg or Reuters)

▪ As a policy advisor in the Ministry of Finance, you advice the Austrian government about
tax reforms. In your Master program in Economics, you have studied optimal taxation and
the way the Austrian tax system is organized.
▪ As an economist at the European Central Bank (ECB), you develop projections about
economic growth and inflation in the Euro Area using econometric models or theoretical
simulations. The ECB’s interest rate decisions will be (partly) based on your research.
▪ As an interest and exchange rate expert of a big Austrian bank, you forecast interest and
exchange rate developments in the Euro Area and advise private or corporate customers.

Our program prepares students for challenging tasks in banks, private companies,
public administration offices, and academia.
Students can specialize in various fields of economics, such as

Courses are held in English (Level B2) by experts in the respective fields.
Our graduates are eligible to enroll in the JKU’s PhD program in Economics, offered
jointly with the University of Innsbruck

SPACE FOR ECONOMICS.ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS.
▪ Students with a Bachelor’s degree (or “Diplom”) in Business and Economics (WiWi)
from JKU can enter our Master’s degree program without further conditions.
▪ Students with a Bachelor’s degree from another Austrian or international university,
university of applied sciences or other institution of higher education can enter our
Master’s degree program under the following conditions:
1. Their Bachelor’s degree is from an accredited institution of higher education.
2. Their Bachelor’s degree contained a minimum number of ECTS in Economics.
▪ Students with a Bachelor’s degree in Science, Mathematics or Statistics can enter
the Master’s degree program in Economics, if their program contained a minimum
number of ECTS in Mathematics and Statistics.

admission requirements to the Master’s degree program in Economics.

SPACE FOR ECONOMICS.MASTER THESIS.
▪ Master Thesis (20 ECTS)▪ Students write a thesis on a topic covered in the fields of Methods in Economics, Economic
Theory, or Advanced Topics in Economics to prove that they are able to independently use
methods and practices to conduct scientific research in economics.
▪ Supervisors are usually lecturers of courses in the Master’s program.
▪ The completion of the thesis should be manageable within 6 months.
▪ To choose a topic at least 24 ECTS of the compulsory courses have to be completed.
▪ Master Thesis Colloquium (3 ECTS)▪ Aims at the individual supervision of the thesis project and its progress.
▪ Master Thesis Seminar (1 ECTS)▪ Students present their thesis project twice – in an early and an advanced stage – to get
feedback from other students in the seminar.
