How does INPEX engage in New Technologies ?

Introduction

• Technologies are becoming more crucial for upstream oil companies to be competitive under the low oil price environment.

• Missions of INPEX engineers and geoscientists are:

– Provide the best fit for the purpose technologies or solutions to the INPEX assets (short-term objective)

– Develop Core Technical Competencies to create new business opportunities (mid to long-term objective)


Short-term Objective: Provision of Best Solutions

• Primary objective of existing projects is to bring production from the oil and gas fields in a manner that is cost-effective, safe and environmentally friendly.

• To achieve this objective, basically the cost effective and field-proven technologies are preferred rather than new and less matured technologies.

• New technologies are applied when existing technologies do not satisfy the requirements of the assets, or they are recognized to add value to the assets and INPEX.

• Ingenuity and introduction of state of art technologies from inside and outside E&P industry are required in various technical areas because of uniqueness of each asset and the current severer business environment.

• 2013 Technology Roadmap has been formulated to develop INPEX Technical Core Competencies.

• The Roadmap translates our business need into specific targets for technology acquisition or development.

• Multi-divisional Task force generated for each focused technical theme.

Technology Roadmap for the Next Period

• The technology roadmap for the next period is under discussions considering the changes of E&P business environment and INPEX projects:

– Low oil price

– IT innovation: IoT, Big Data, AI

– Emerging technologies: Nano-technology, innovative chemicals etc. mainly for EOR

– Renewable energy

– Commencement of production operations of the Ichthys LNG project – “lean” as a key word


Summary

• INPEX engineers and geoscientists have two missions: 1) provide the best solutions to the assets, and 2) develop technical core competency.

• To satisfy the requirements from our assets under the current difficult business environment, ingenuity and proactive introduction of state of art technologies are required: the field management of the Ichthys LNG project presented as an example.

• To develop technical core competencies, INPEX Technology Roadmap was formulated in 2013, in which 5-focused technical themes were selected.

• Multi-divisional task force team was generated for each theme, achieving good outcomes. Each theme is being reviewed in terms of maturities of technologies, human resources and management skill as an operator.

• The technology roadmap for the next period is under discussions considering the significant change in business environment.
