BOTOX is a procedure designed to temporarily remove wrinkles on a person’s face. It primarily targets frown lines, wrinkles between the eyebrows and lines on the forehead. It can also reduce the appearance of crow’s feet around the eyes. Over 11.8 million patients have received BOTOX treatments to date.

The repeated contraction of muscles when a person makes facial expressions is the cause of wrinkles. As people get older, they experience cellular changes, collagen depletion, and hormonal imbalances, which can also lead to wrinkles. Additionally, with age comes increased skin damage from sun exposure, smoking, etc.

The medication used in BOTOX is known as botulinum toxin A. While this substance is technically a toxin, it was found to be effective in weakening muscles and was approved by the FDA to treat wrinkles between the eyebrows. The minimal amount of the toxin used for cosmetic treatments seldom leads to complications.

When a person makes facial expressions, it causes the tightening of several muscles in the face. During a treatment, BOTOX is used to make it so the muscles relax and don’t contract, thereby diminishing wrinkles.

You should also warn your doctor of any problems with swallowing, previous facial procedures and all other medical conditions. Pregnant women should not receive BOTOX.

BOTOX involves a few tiny injections directly into facial muscles. Therefore, the procedure itself only takes about 10 minutes, and is followed by little to no recovery time. Known as a “lunchtime” procedure, it can be administered at any time throughout the day, and patients can return to work immediately.
