Jobs: King of the Geeks
(A Notable Entrepreneur)
The Legend• A regular, “Beethoven of
Business,” Steve Jobs is the Charismatic CEO of Apple Computers, and a wildly successful entrepreneur with a net worth of more than $5 Billion.
• Jobs is a radical and innovative leader who has revolutionized many industries.
In the Beginning…
• Steve got his start in technology at Rice University in Portland, but dropped out after only a year to take a job at Atari™.
• It was there that he met fellow electronics enthusiast, and friend Steve Wozniak.
The Big Apple• Wozniak had previously
developed a better personal computer, but had been turned down by several companies when he tried to find a producer.
• Jobs convinced Wozniak to leave his job at Atari, and start Apple computers with him in the family garage.
Great Success!
• The fledgling company grew quickly, making both of them millionaires many times over.
• In 1986, Jobs forfeited his job as CEO at Apple to found NeXT computing, another electronics firm.
Side Projects
• In 1986, Jobs bought the small computer graphics firm, Pixar, off of Lucasfilm for a paltry $10 Million.
• The small company went on to great success, having produced nine major motion pictures, grossing several billion dollars.
Return to Apple
• NeXT Computing was bought out by Apple in 1996 for $448 million, with Jobs coming back as CEO.
• The company had been struggling for some time, but under the new (old) management, the company flourished once again.
Even Greater Success!
• Jobs brought the world a multitude of innovative products, each of which left the competition struggling to keep up.
• In 2006, Disney bought out Pixar for $7.6 Billion, making Jobs their biggest shareholder by far, with 7.2% of the company’s stock.
