Using Your Own Skills• This is not a game where you push buttons

or click on dialogue boxes to get extra “skill levels”

• A! the skills you have in SL are your own - these are the ones you’ll need to “get a job” in SL

• Be warned: working in SL is hard, as hard as working in RL! Some people, viewing SL as pure entertainment, are not into “work”

3

Types of JobsThis classification depends mostly on what RL skills you’re using:

• none at all

• related to the SL environment (the 3D virtual world)

• related to SL’s own economy & society

Unskilled Jobs• Dancers

• Models

• Shop AssistantsThese are offered on the Classified section of the forums, or on in-world events; you can also try to ask business owners for opportunities.

Skilled Jobs• All of these are very creative in

nature and need talent

• You will have to learn a specific tool - either in-world or off-world

• They will take time to master, and competition is currently very high

• Specialize on niches instead!6

Page 7: Jobs in Second Life

Builders• Uses an in-world tool, designed for

amateurs• Architects: build homes• Furniture designers, weapons, vehicles, jewelry/

shoes/hair, miscelaneous objects• Artists

• Relatively easy to master, very hard to find a niche to compete

7

Texturizers• Natural partners of builders

• Textures need an external tool, and are quite hard to do properly

• Most builders use “stock textures”; texturizers are more often hired for specialized work (eg. a specific, themed building)

8

Clothiers• “Specialized” texturizer (same external

tools, different techniques)• Use readily-available templates• Clothes and Skins need skill to create (and

not merely reproduce), but they sell very well

• Very hard to do “seamless clothes” which are the only ones that sell for a good price

• New brands should specialize on a particular style

9

Scripters• Just uses in-world tool, easy to learn

for a programmer• Traditionally, you sell scripted objects,

not the scripts themselves - thus, partnership with a builder is important

• Expert scripters concentrate in large-scale projects and on reducing lag

10

Animators• Created with an off-world tool:

Poser (not too difficult to learn)• Animations sell very well, almost

no competition, always in great demand

• Very complex and detailed dance animations need a studio (with motion capturing devices)

11

Event Hosters• Needs only “organizing” and “communication” skills (no technical skills required)

• Creativity in attracting and entertaining people (over and over again) is important

• Usually, event hosters are not paid (you need to find sponsors or other ways to get money)

• DJs, weddings: types of event hosters that are very well paid

Real estate agent• One of the best ways of making

money and providing additional services to customers

• Needs large amounts of money to start, a thorough knowledge of the market, high availability (> 12 h./day)

• Cartellized environment - either you’ll play by the rules of the rest of the cartel, or you’ll be boycotted

Speculator• On the money exchanges: http://

www.slexchange.com or http://www.ige.com

• On stock markets• Investing in Ginko Finantials• Needs a certain amount of money (and time) to make a serious profit; does not need any communication skills (no talking to people in-world)

14

Mall/Island Owner• Needs a very large space to

operate• Focus is on value-added service

beyond land sales/rents• Event hosting to attract business

to the whole group• Almost all real estate agents are

in this business as well15

Other Jobs...• Creativity and imagination is the

key to success• Explore niches that nobody is in• Word-of-mouth is the best way to
