Understanding the “WHY/What/How” of ASD

Chromosomal Genetics

Autism Genome Project - Global 5 yr collaboration

*130 scientists in 50 institutions in 19 countries, $20 million

*DNA samples from 1,600 families

*Estimates 100 genes could be involved

The analysis also uncovered a link between autism and the deletion in part

of a gene known as neurexin 1, one of a family of genes important in

communication between neurons in the brain.

Inclusive Education Programs at Ontario Colleges

Prepare for your future with an Inclusive Education programThe idea of attending college can be intimidating when you have a developmental disability, intellectual disability or other learning challenges. Inclusive Education programs (also known as Community Integration through Co-operative Education programs) at Ontario colleges give you the opportunity to experience college life and pursue postsecondary education, with courses tailored to meet your individual needs. You will learn the skills you need to be independent in your community and find employment in your chosen field.http://www.ontariocolleges.ca/SearchResults/EDUCATION-COMMUNITY-SOCIAL-SERVICES-INCLUSIVE-EDUCATION/_/N-lqjs

Inclusive Education Programs at Ontario Colleges

Inclusive Education CoursesAll Inclusive Education programs have a set of core courses, focusing on skills like communication, human relations, computer literacy, and life skills. On top of these, you can select courses in a specific area that interests you, such as Culinary Management, Law and Security, Office Administration, Social Service Work and more. The areas will vary from college to college, depending on the types of programs they offer, so make sure you check to see what’s available before you apply.Inclusive Education students will have access to a learning facilitator for both in-class support and tutoring outside of the classroom. Many programs also offer a field placement to help students develop skills for future employment.

Inclusive Education Programs at Ontario Colleges

General Inclusive Education Program RequirementsInclusive Education programs require an OSSD or equivalent, or Mature Student status.Once your application is received, colleges will send a follow-up package with specific program requirements. These requirements will vary from college to college, but might include a written letter outlining your need for a modified program curriculum, or references from teachers, employers or counselors who can speak to your level of independence in learning and working.Colleges may also request that you participate in an interview to discuss your personal goals and how an Inclusive Education program can help you.

Inclusive Education Programs at Ontario Colleges

Inclusive Education - Job and Salary OutcomesGraduates of Inclusive Education programs will have a variety of employment opportunities, depending on the area they have chosen to study. For example, students who focused on Law and Security may find work as a security officer, while those who chose Office Administration could get a job as an office assistant.Because of the diversity of fields and job offerings, salaries are difficult to predict. Most graduates will begin in entry-level positions, and can expect their salary to increase with experience & responsibility.

Our specialized recruitment, onboarding, and management processes create an environment where our employees’ greatest strengths can emerge; setting the tone for exceptional attention to detail, problem solving, and innovation. Ask us about our Dandelion Management Model.Whether you’re an employer looking to access this talent pool, a person on the spectrum looking for work, or a community organization, we’re looking forward to working with you.

A dandelion is only a weed in an environment where it is not welcomed. If the dandelion is in an environment where it is welcomed, valued, and nurtured, it turns into an herb. People with autism often struggle to feel welcome in the labor market. Specialisterne strives to create an environment where each individual can thrive and provides support both for the individual and the employer to maintain this comfort zone.

We’d really like to get to know you, so that when we have jobs we’re recruiting for we have a deep understanding of the strengths and capabilities represented in our community. Tell us about yourself. What are your interests? What kinds of jobs do you see yourself doing? When we have a position that looks like it may be similar to what you’re looking for, we’ll reach out to you and let you know. Then we’ll ask you come to one of our workshops.See current opportunities here.See upcoming workshops and events here.

EMPLOYMENT DISCOVERY WORKSHOPSIn partnership with our friends at Autism Ontario, Specialisterne Canada is running a series of employment discovery workshops throughout the province. These are half day sessions that provide a fun, interactive and creative experience out of which each participant will receive a profile that can help them prepare for future employment opportunities.Deepening our understanding of each individual helps us to secure job opportunities with the employers we work with. Our objective is to find the right person for the job, and to find the right job for the person. These workshops are an important part of that process.

ASD Women @ WORK

-Society has expectations of both men and women, but many women on the autism spectrum believe that these expectations are greater for women.-At work, women experience ‘a glass ceiling that is double glazed’ according to the authors. Women experience the same difficulties as other women, plus the difficulties experienced by women on the autism spectrum.-These women often go into professions that are traditionally male-orientated.

MANAGING ANXIETY

Defining Anxiety

*A psychological and physiological state characterized by

somatic, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral components

*Anxiety is considered to be a normal reaction to a stressor. It

may help an individual to deal with a demanding situation by

prompting them to cope with it. However, when anxiety

becomes overwhelming, it may fall under the classification of

an anxiety disorder.

SOCIAL ANXIETY

-Very common challenge for children, youth, & adults on the ASD spectrum

-Can interfere with their ability to attend social events, form friendships, and seek out or form romantic relationships

-Many people with ASD who want a relationship fail to have one because they fail to ever even attempt to pursue one – Jerry Newport

MASCULINE BRAIN RESEARCH

Biological sex affects the neurobiology of autism

This study seeks to answer two questions about how autism is modulated by biological sex at the level of the brain: (i) is the neuroanatomy of autism different in

males and females? (ii) (ii) does the neuroanatomy of autism fit

predictions from the ‘extreme male brain’ theory of autism, in males and/or in females?

Biological sex affects the neurobiology of autism – VIDEO

Simon Baron Cohen Interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crmDSDeCEp4

-Research Findings

(1) - Revealed 'neuroanatomical masculinisation' in brains of autistic girlsie - females with autism show neuroanatomical "masculinization".-female brains which exhibit autism traits are similar to sections of a typical male brain.(2) Researchers are hoping a greater understanding of autism in both sexes will improve the chance of finding treatments.

-Research Findings

(2) Researchers are hoping a greater understanding of autism in both sexes will improve the chance of finding treatments.-Masculinisation may implicate physiological mechanisms that drive sexual dimorphism, such as prenatal sex hormones and sex-linked genetic mechanisms.'
