Who Am I….I am a hardworking guy who, like many others, found himself out of work during the economic downturn in 2010. After a long battle of wrong turns, job search strategies that led to no where, and dead end leads, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search. Like anything else in life, I needed to treat my search like a full-time job and create a plan that would allow me to stand out above the competition.

Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me…because I quickly realized that to handle an event like that is to focus on what you can control and share the experience to help others. I believe that an experience not shared is a lost opportunity in life, and that smart people learn from their mistakes and smarter people learn from other people’s experiences.

The next group of slides will discuss things that I believe you should do immediately after you have been told that you will be laid off.

I will tell you the tip or idea and let you know why I like it to help you in dealing with the process.

Remember, I am by no means a professional and never claim to be. I am just giving you things as I see them to help you to see through the ‘fog’ and get ahead in your career.

I hope my ideas help you out and help me to end unemployment one person at a time.

Ask to speak with the people who are making the decision and let them know all of the duties that you do that no one else does or projects that no one else knows. Sometimes this revelation leads to an extension which at least allows you to continue to get paid even if you will lose you job down the road.

Make sure that you get transitional services as part of your severance and do not go to use those services until you are ready to look for a job. Some people rush right into this process and they are not mentally ready. Their time passes and the opportunity is missed because the person was not in the right frame of mine. Use transitional services but do it when you are ready to drive the process.

Talk to hiring managers that you know within the company and let them know that you would have no problem working for them even as a temporary worker if there is work available. Again, this keeps you working and getting a paycheck while more opportunities open up. Let them know your transferrable skills and how you could help them out. Companies have layoffs in some departments while other are hiring. That’s just the way it is.

Start writing recommendations on LinkedIn for all of the co-workers and managers that you have worked closely with over the years at the company. Remember, LinkedIn asks each person that receives a recommendation if they want to reciprocate. This is a great way to solidify your relationship as it could be needed for a reference and to build up your own amount of recommendations.

Talk with Human Resources and let them know that you are interested in coming back as a consultant or a temporary employee if conditions change and say a new contract is signed or the business pops.

Nothing stays the same and going back to your old company is always a possibility. Many people I know have made their next job be back at their old company.

Regarding your emotions, yes they will be flying many ways. I have always said, don’t bottle them up. Instead try to channel them into getting you your next opportunity. Always know that you will have up and down days especially during this time in the process but understand in most cases it is not personal and is just business.

Page 12: Job Search Survival Kit -- Part 7 -- OMG I Just Got My Layoff Notice. Now What I Do I Do?

Don’t hide in your office or cube. Get out and talk to people in the office and let them know that you are in the job market and that you will be available for new work soon. Make sure that everyone has your contact information and be sure to confirm that if needed, the pertinent people will recommend you or give you a reference.

Stay in touch with the people and see them when you can for lunch or coffee. Don’t allow yourself to be forgotten even though you are keeping your options open. My point is that your next job could be at your last company if changes happen suddenly in your business.

Make sure you leave on a good note. No rants, no emotional negative comments and no threats. There is nothing positive that can come of that. Plus, you don’t want your company contesting your unemployment because of something emotional that you did on the way out the door. Again, it is IN NO WAY personal in most cases. It is just business. Deal with it by focusing on what you can control and not what you can’t.

Yes it is their loss. Yes, it is not something you thought would ever happen to you. Yes it is tough. Yes, it is a real pain. Yes, it is at times nerve wracking . Yes, it is at times lonely and unbelievable. That said, focus on getting an even better job next time and one that will make you even happier long term. There is no reason why that cannot happen for you and if things fall the right way, it could be back at your old company.
