A Reminder Of Who Am I & Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me?

Who Am I….I am a hardworking guy who, like many others, found himself out of work during the economic downturn in 2010. After a long battle of wrong turns, job search strategies that led to no where, and dead end leads, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search. Like anything else in life, I needed to treat my search like a full-time job and create a plan that would allow me to stand out above the competition.

Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me…because I quickly realized that to handle an event like that is to focus on what you can control and share the experience to help others. I believe that an experience not shared is a lost opportunity in life, and that smart people learn from their mistakes and smarter people learn from other people’s experiences.

Remember, I am by no means a professional and never claim to be. I am just giving you things as I see them to help you to see through the ‘fog’ and get ahead in your career.

I hope my ideas help you out and help me to end unemployment one person at a time.

Lets say you are looking to gain more of a purpose. Well, take YOUR skill set and offer that to your favorite charity as a volunteer. This will keep your skills active, give you something to talk about during interviews and help you to really feel satisfied about where you are because with this time off, you are taking advantage of it that helps you and the charity. This is HUGE and very useful and you never know where it could lead for you.

Now you can also do what I mentioned above for the following situations, local political campaigns, national political campaign, local events in your town or city, holiday related events like parades or faires. See my point? This will help you to stay ON mentally, and really feel that you are making a difference etc.

Don’t discount working your skills in an environment to help animals as well. Places like Zoos or aquariums or shelters I bet could use your skills to make those places run better or run more efficiently

Plus helping an elderly center or a children’s help center are all places I bet your skills can be used in the time you have for free. Think about it, I bet you can figure something out. Everyone is different on this stuff. I am just planting the idea.

Job Search Mental And Physical Focus Tips

It is extremely important that you stay in the best physical shape possible as you will be dealing with stress and a lack of routine. Maybe you want to get into a structured weight management just to have the deadline of being weighed in each week and remember those weekly meetings can be networking opportunities as well. This is another way to make this time work for you. You cant look for a job 24/7 or you will go insane. Here is another way to stay in balance and do something for you and network.

Do you have a treadmill at your house or know of one somewhere that is not being used that you can access? Do you have an IPAD or laptop or smart phone, well walk on the treadmill while you watch your favorite show. Don’t watch that show from the couch anymore. Watch it from the treadmill as you walk. Now you are exercising while you watch your show. How cool is that?

Want to control your portion intake when you eat out ? Its on you to make that happen.

Just ask for your “doggie” bag before you start eating and once you have eaten what you should eat, you can bag it to take home and that way you don’t “pick”

NameJob Search Mental And Physical Focus Tips

Focus on the number “1” all of the time.

Remember you are looking for only “1” job.

You take weight off “1” pound at a time.

You take this process “1” day at a time.

Page 13: Job Search Survival Kit -- Part 25 -- Keeping Sharp During The Job Search --

Job Search Mental And Physical Focus Tips

Keep the focus on the number “1” when you can because “1” is a manageable number and not as overwhelming as some of the other numbers that you could look at. Like say applications or interviews, you take them “1” at a time. Even if you do many of both, you still do them “1” at a time. See what I am driving at here?

Do you like sweets and soda and don’t want to give them all up? Try the very small soda cans as well as the weight watcher treats and ice creams. Those two things have helped me to lose many pounds over the last year and they can help you as well.

Do you live in a warm climate and you like to swim for exercise? Maybe you don’t have your own pool? Well tell a neighbor or friend that you will check on their house for them during the week if they let you take a dip in the pool. That way their house gets checked on and you get some exercise.

Don’t discount the value of taking a yoga class. The classes are pretty cheap and you network with the other class members and you keep a schedule and routine which is important to do during this period when you have less structure.

Walk wherever and whenever you can. You can get a Fitbit if you want but doing things like parking in back of the parking lot when grocery shopping or walking around a local pond really help to keep your mind clear. Sometimes walking your neighborhood early in the morning can do a world of good because it is so quiet and once your results come about, no matter what level of good they are, it’s a good interview story

Job Search Mental And Physical Focus Tips

Staying in shape matters to some interviewers more than others as some people think physical appearance is a factor in getting a job. Sorry that is unfair but it’s the way it is. I myself am five foot five inches tall and I am sure that it mattered in some cases but I it didn’t stop me because I only focused on what I could control and I tell you that your physical and mental health are a priority especially during this stressful process. You can do it. No need to be a hero. Just start slow, get a routine and go from there.

Job Search Mental And Physical Focus Tips

Having a new routine is HUGE in this process because a very underrated potentially negative factor in the transition process is the lack of routine that having a job gives you. Doing what I discuss here helps you to gain a routine so you maintain things like sleep habits and the items that you never thought about doing when you had that routine. No need to sleep all day and be up all night. That is not good for anyone.

Job Search Mental And Physical Focus Tips

These are some of the ways that you can stay sharp during this process so that when a hiring manager calls you out of the blue and asks if you “have a minute to talk” you are “on your game” and ready to go. You own you. No one else does so it is up to you to stay as sharp and “with it”. This could really end up mattering much more than you thought.
