A Reminder Of Who Am I & Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me?

Who Am I….I am a hardworking guy who, like many others, found himself out of work during the economic downturn in 2010. After a long battle of wrong turns, job search strategies that led to no where, and dead end leads, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search. Like anything else in life, I needed to treat my search like a full-time job and create a plan that would allow me to stand out above the competition.

Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me…because I quickly realized that to handle an event like that is to focus on what you can control and share the experience to help others. I believe that an experience not shared is a lost opportunity in life, and that smart people learn from their mistakes and smarter people learn from other people’s experiences.

The next group of slides will discuss things that I believe exist in today’s workplace .

I will tell you the tip or idea and let you know why I like it to help you in dealing with the process.

Remember, I am by no means a professional and never claim to be. I am just giving you things as I see them to help you to see through the ‘fog’ and get ahead in your career.

I hope my ideas help you out and help me to end unemployment one person at a time.

Cold Facts About Today’s Workplace

Business is business. Yes everyone wants to believe that the workplace is a second family and all that but at the end of the day, its about the product or service as well as the sales. Maybe a long time ago, the workplace was more of a family place but not today. This is not meant to depress you. It is meant to help you.

Cold Facts About Today’s Workplace.

Be early and stay late. You really have to be a person that the company can depend on to be there when they need you to be. People who make excuses are just not taken seriously as the company really looks for people that they can depend on in times of need. This is what matters and that is the way it is.

Cold Facts About the Workplace.

Keep educating yourself. You are responsible for your own advancement. You are responsible for making time to get your own certifications and degrees. The company will not come up to you and tell you to do it but in my experience, the person who takes care of these items is in the place to take advantage of the opportunity when it arises so make yourself the best you can be so you can be in place for that opportunity.

Cold Facts About The Workplace

Keep your distractions out of the workplace. If you have family or outside issues, do your best to keep it out of the workplace either in your discussions or in your actions. You are there to work and the other stuff really should not enter into your work life. Try your best to keep your home stuff home and your work stuff at work so that your balance is maintained. No one will tell you this. Its up to you to control your own life.

Cold Facts About The Workplace

Lets face it. People who are timid, just don’t get the opportunities that people who are fearless get. People who volunteers to take on more in tough times are the ones that are noticed. Your vocabulary should never say “ that is not my job”. At least that is what I have found has helped people to advance in my career. Be aware of when this behavior is needed and jump on it with both feet.

Cold Facts About The Workplace

Attitude, attitude, attitude. Can’t say this enough. No matter what is going on around you, do your best to stay positive and never, never, never fall into that negative world. Stay away from the workplace’s negative people and keep it positive all the time. People will gravitate to you. This is a day to day challenge but it is on you to do it.

Cold Facts About The Workplace.

When you speak, speak for yourself and never speak for the masses. Let the other people give their own opinions. The person that says “I heard this or “I heard that” gets typecast as a busy body that doesn’t work. Believe me , this happens. Don’t let it happen to you. Make sure that your opinions are yours.

Cold Facts About The Workplace

You never know when someone will ask you what you would do to improve something or some process. Your mind should always be looking to improve things so you should have your answers ready. Jot down a list of ideas and have them on your desk ready if someone asks. If you see some processes are beleaguered or old, offer to be on the committee that helps to improve things. Be part of the solution and don’t just state the problem.

Cold Facts About The Workplace.

Your boss is not in charge of your career. You are. So many people make the mistake to wait and only do things if their boss tells them to do it or sets the direction. Take charge of your own progress. Offer to help. Offer to take on something that is causing issues and try to fix it. Want respect? Go earn it. Don’t sit at your desk and wait for the next assignment. Grab it and own it.

Cold Facts About The Workplace

Your co-workers are not your friends. They are co-workers. They are not your neighborhood friends that you know forever and if you put them in that place in your mind and heart, you will be disappointed more often then not. These people as well as you are not there to make friends, they are there to do a job. Not trying to be negative, just trying to help you out.

Cold Facts About The Workplace

Keep controversial topic discussions to a minimum no matter how passionate you feel about things. Passion is always great but in the wrong setting, it can be a distraction. This goes for things like collecting for charities and selling candy for charity and stuff like that. People don’t say it but sometimes they resent the pressure that they feel to buy things.

Cold Facts About The Workplace.

In the above slides, I have tried to bring out things that exist in many workplaces but no one will ever openly address. It is up to you to stay positive, take care of your own career opportunities, remove distractions and be ready to work each day. Yes companies can reduce or add staff as they see fit but that is out of your control. Focus on what you can control which is you.
