Observe overhead lines, tree limbs, or other objects before raising the mast of the drill rig. Anticipate the radius of sweep going up and coming down, and plan appropriately.

Position the drill rig no closer than 20 feet from overhead power lines.

6. Lowering the Load

4. Advancing casing

A crane is used to lift longer (10 ft) lengths of casing preventing manual handling,

But a potential pinch point occurs when putting lifting strap around casing length.

Work with a partner who can lift the pipe just high enough to allow the strap to be placed.

Use proper lifting techniques to avoid back strain.

Wear gloves when screwing casing lengths together.

5. Removing cashing

from bore hole

Physical injury from removing drill pipe in casing

Physical hazards to personnel on the ground in the vicinity of the heavy machinery.

Physical injury when lifting and connecting casing lengths together (potential hand or back injuries).

Slippery working surface when water added to wash casing down.

Hanging cashing can swing and potentially knock someone on ground or pinch fingers of someone.

Using hammer to strike cashing loosen inner core can result in deflection of hammer and hand or arm injury.

Stand clear as drill pipe is lowered/removed into cashing pipes come down fast and could make contact with a person’s head, body or hand.

Wear gloves and hard hat. Personnel on the ground should

keep away from the drill rig unless they are required for the task.

Drillers and helpers should work together to lift and carry heavy augers, drill pipe, core barrels or casing.

Do not approach heavy equipment without first establishing eye contact with the operator.

Use standard hand signals when lifting or lowering the load.

2. Transporting cylinders

Dust or left over Teflon tape on the cylinder outlet may cause gas leakage.

The regulator may misread pressure.

Warm areas or direct

sunlight may cause pressure increases.

The cylinders contain

compressed/pressurized gas and can explode.

Restrain the gas cylinder with upper and lower chains to secure to a wall or cylinder stand.

Close the valve before taking off the regulator.

Check the washer before fitting the regulator.

Wipe the outlet with a clean and dry cloth.

Seal the cylinder outlet with new Teflon tape.

Place the regulator on the cylinder and tighten.

Open the cylinder valve at low and check for leakage. Use soap solution for leak test

Stand to the side of the regulator.

Select a well-ventilated area to store cylinders.

Squirt a soapy solution around the tightened valve-regulator junction to check for leaks. If there is no bubbling then seal is

good. Check the regulator for the

correct pressure and set if necessary.

Do not permit a flame or spark to come in contact with the gas cylinder.

3. When pulling/pushing the fish tape and wire into a panel board or through conduit

4. When isolated from one another in order to co-ordinate the pull and push rhythm (radio, phone, etc.)

Poor communication could bodily or equipment damage

Verify communication devices are functioning properly.

5. Use approved lubricant

Physical strain and fall potential is increased during the pull.

Do not rush the pull. Get assistance if necessary.

6. When the pull is completed, secure and safe off conductors.
