The Opportunity

North Carolina State University (NC State) invites applications and nominations for the position of Executive Director of Talent Management with University Advancement. The Executive Director of Talent Management will be a key member of the University Advancement leadership team, and will be responsible for the design, development, and implementation of an innovative and strategic talent management program for the division and its partner entities.

Working both independently and as a member of the leadership team, the Executive Director will employ industry best practices focused on assisting senior development managers to identify and attract top-level talent, ensure successful onboarding and engagement, and support job performance and retention through targeted learning development and career management programs. Close collaboration with college deans, hiring managers, and university HR partners will be paramount in order to fulfill recruitment and retention goals.

The Executive Director will be expected to:

Develop, maintain and direct a comprehensive, integrated talent management program that includes: recruitment, onboarding, training, and professional development, staff engagement and satisfaction, retention, and succession planning;

Establish a leadership pipeline and talent review process that improves the depth and breadth of internal talent and skills across University Advancement and colleges;

Build the perception and reputation of University Advancement and NC State as a leader in the advancement talent management arena and an employer of choice for advancement professionals in North Carolina;

Maintain a deep understanding of NC State’s campaign goals, themes, structure, and plans in order to create an integrated strategy for talent management that directly supports the business of University Advancement and the needs of the campaign;

Oversee the design and delivery of initiatives, policies, and practices that promote organizational excellence, integrity, community, and productivity;

Develop a local, regional, and national network of professional colleagues; attend/participate in professional organization, talent management conferences, workshops, and programs;

Maintain and strengthen University Advancement’s relationship with NC State’s HR department through increased communication and close coordination;

Develop and implement effective recruitment strategies that build robust talent pools for current and future University Advancement staff searches;

Work closely with University HR partners and development hiring managers on job descriptions and postings, screening of applications, candidate interviews, reference checking and selection;

Partner with University Communications to ensure all materials, publications and websites inform and motivate development related applicants;

Help ensure that HR provides excellent services and support for development managers and staff on matters involving recruitment and hiring, employee relations, compensation, benefits, policy interpretation and application, and other services that support and enhance the work of University Advancement;

Establish clear metrics to monitor acquisition goals, cost per hire, time-to-fill, and diversity hiring data to develop recruitment/retention strategies that will reduce unwanted turnover across the division;

Develop, implement, and evaluate succession management strategies and tools;

Design and manage a talent review process to evaluate leaders on performance and potential and conduct talent gap analysis against strategic business needs;

Facilitate and promote professional growth, team building and general esprit de corps to improve organizational effectiveness and healthy communication;

Consult and partner with NC State HR department, outside providers, and others on professional development and training programs that benefit University Advancement;

Assess the internal climate; identify training and skill development needs and develop or arrange for education and training programs and solutions;

Work with managers to identify professional development opportunities, build effective plans, and rollout strategies to improve performance and retention;

Develop an internal coaching, mentoring and leadership training program;

Coordinate organization and programming for University Advancement all-staff meetings, manager’s meetings, and other staff learning opportunities;

Provide strategic career counseling and coaching as requested;

Supervise at least one individual within the Office of Talent Management;

Manage budgetary resources for the Office to include travel expenses for candidates; training and professional development expenses; and consultant arrangements, among others;

Represent NC State to external audiences at conferences associated with development's key professional organizations;

Serve as a liaison to Central Human Resources on behalf of University Advancement;

Serve as an active team member in the development and implementation of University Advancement’s short-term and long-term planning objectives;

Maintain a general understanding of federal, state and local employment regulations and ensure fair and equitable application of personnel practices in accordance with university policies and guidelines; and

Other duties as assigned.

Search Specifics

The successful applicant will be a proven leader and general manager with exceptional interpersonal

skills, strong project management skills, and relationship-building proficiency. Candidates should

have excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to foster and maintain

collaborative working relationships in a dynamic environment with university partners and peers.

Previous experience in recruitment and talent management is also preferred. The successful

candidate will have expert knowledge of all aspects of advancement operations including annual

giving, planned and major gifts, advancement services, and corporate and foundation relations, as

well as a proven ability to manage a donor portfolio and move prospects through the evaluation,

cultivation, and solicitation cycle. Candidates must be willing to travel and participate in evening and

weekend activities.

Successful applicants will hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, with preference

given to those with an advanced degree. Seven or more years of progressive responsibility in

institutional advancement and/or human resources and major gift fundraising experience is

preferred.
