About The Opportunity
North Carolina State University (NC State) invites applications and nominations for the position of
Executive Director of Annual Giving with University Development. The Executive Director reports to
the Associate Vice Chancellor for University Development and is responsible for leading the strategy
of engaging and developing a broad base of donors in support of NC State. The Executive Director
plans, organizes and conducts a comprehensive multi-channel fundraising program for soliciting gifts
from alumni, parents, faculty and staff, students, friends, and other identifiable prospect audiences of
the University. The executive director works collaboratively to provide fundraising expertise to NC
State colleges, departments and programs through effective and efficient centralized services and,
where appropriate, customized individual initiatives. Additionally, effective working relationships with
related campus offices, including university marketing, communications, alumni relations,
advancement services, major gifts and others are essential to program success.
The Executive Director will be expected to:
• Plan, direct and oversee all aspects of the University’s centralized annual giving program;
• Provide leadership in developing and administering a strategic plan and an annual operating plan for the continual growth of annual gift income;
• In particular, the Executive Director will:
• Design and conduct annual giving appeals for NC State’s various constituent audiences, including alumni, parents, students, faculty/staff, friends, and other identifiable prospect audiences;
• Define and implement a multi-channel fundraising strategy including mail, phone, email, social media, face-to-face solicitation and other (including new and emerging) methods and media;
• Create concepts and constructs messages for annual giving appeals and marketing efforts;
• Where appropriate, works collaboratively with internal and external communications offices to refine the annual giving case for support;
• Provide annual giving fundraising expertise, guidance and support for college and program-focused annual giving initiatives;
• Augment broad fundraising appeals through the use of specialized annual giving campaigns and initiatives;
• Manage a program of annual giving donor recognition societies/gift clubs and other broad-
based donor stewardship in support of the University’s donor development and retention goals;
• Design supporting marketing initiatives that teach and promote a culture of annual gift support among NC State’s students and other constituent audiences;
• Achieve successful program levels of key fundraising program performance metrics, including donor acquisition rates, pledge fulfillment, donor retention rates, donor loyalty and donor development (upgrade) effectiveness;
• Continually seek new and emerging fundraising best practice for the NC State annual giving
program;
Ensure that the University’s annual giving program is a leader among its peers by maximizing
current operating support from alumni and other constituents;
Evaluate program results, and guide subsequent program strategies, through the use of data-
driven evaluation and analysis, and work to identify and implement those reports and program
“dashboards” essential to monitoring program effectiveness;
Recruit and direct a team of dedicated annual giving professionals with skills necessary for
effective program implementation;
Develop and manage a team of leadership annual giving fundraisers managing portfolios of
prospects for personal cultivation and solicitation of high-end annual gifts;
Manage the annual giving program’s operating budget -- efficiently using program resources and
maximizing program results in a complex University environment;
Build and maintain effective partnerships with alumni relations, advancement services, academic
colleges, departments and programs;
Build and maintain effective partnerships with external vendors and suppliers wherever
necessary to leverage resources and program productivity;
Ensure quality control and effectiveness with all external vendor relationships;
Work effectively with frontline fundraisers/major gift teams and college deans and development
officers to determine respective annual giving participation and revenue goals and donor
development strategies;
Build and leverage a strong volunteer base;
Align with NC State’s overall donor development goals and objectives for identifying, qualifying,
cultivating, soliciting and stewarding gift prospects and donors;
Integrate NC State annual giving into the broader schedule and structure of NC State capital
campaigns; and
Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

The mission of University Advancement of North Carolina State University is to facilitate communication, internally and externally, and to enhance the image of the University; to provide meaningful programs and service to alumni and friends; to seek service-support participation and ambassadorship from constituents; to build and sustain a strong volunteer leadership network; to raise money from private sources; to manage the collection of private gifts for North Carolina State University; to manage an effective alumni and development database and gift systems; and to coordinate with the General Administration in areas of government and legislative priorities in Raleigh and Washington.
Search Specifics The successful applicant will have a proven record of strong leadership, managerial and supervisory
skills and a record of accomplishment of success in developing, creating and leading a highly
motivated staff of fundraising and support professionals. Candidates should have knowledge of
fundraising principles and an ability to engage in a complex development program at a major public
university, as well as experience with the integration of annual giving into an organization’s greater
fundraising goals. The successful applicant will have the ability to work independently as well as
collaboratively with central university development staff as well as college, department and program
colleagues to achieve collective and respective goals. Demonstrated past success in the strategic
execution and management of a comprehensive, multi-channel annual giving program across a
range of campus prospect audiences, including alumni, parents, employee, students and friends is
also preferred.
Applicants should possess outstanding verbal and written communication skills, and have the ability
to organize and complete complex tasks on deadlines. The successful applicant will have a
demonstrated commitment to higher education and an ability to articulate a compelling case for
annual gift support of NC State. Candidates should have the analytical ability to evaluate results,
and recognize fundraising opportunities. Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in face-to-face
fundraising is preferred.
The successful candidate will have the ability to hire, train, manage, motivate and supervise a team, as well as the ability to develop and monitor budgets and timelines. Applicants should possess a positive attitude, a proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations, and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
Successful applicants will hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, with preference
given to those with an advanced degree. Seven or more years of experience in higher education
annual giving fundraising with increasing management and leadership responsibilities is preferred.
