JOB DESCRIPTION - ADOS Title: ADOS Purpose of Position: To work with the Academic Manager (AM) and teaching team to ensure the effective and efficient day-to-day functioning of teaching operations, and the maintenance and improvement of quality standards and student satisfaction with courses, teaching and other educational services. Accountabilities This position reports to the Academic Manager (AM). This post works closely with the AM in managing the day-to-day functioning of teaching operations. While the Academic Manager has responsibility for the overall course management, recruiting and resourcing, budgetary monitoring, short and long-term planning and organisation, the ADOS supports the AM in day-to-day course management and teacher support, inspiring staff to raise our standards of teaching, training and learning. The ADOS is a key member of the school team having responsibility for supporting and inspiring teaching staff to raise standards of teaching and learning, and monitoring student progress and satisfaction. Specifically, this includes: 1. Teaching, Staff Development and Management 1. carrying out teaching duties: General English Fluency, 1-to-1, exam preparation courses – approximately 60% during the course of the year. 2. assisting the Academic Manager (AM) with inducting new teachers to ensure that they have operational knowledge of Atlas’ processes and procedures, Course Guides, Teacher’s Handbook and other quality systems and procedural documentation required to fulfil their teaching duties successfully according to the curriculum. 3. mentoring teachers who are new to Atlas, acting as first contact for post-induction advice, helping them to familiarise themselves with school facilities, resources, policies and procedures and, generally, to help new teachers further settle into their role quickly and effectively. 4. providing ad hoc advice and support to staff on teaching matters. 5. offering assistance and direction to teachers with weekly planning, and monitoring the quality of lesson planning and tutorials given by teachers. 6. assisting the AM in preparing and delivering developmental workshops as part of an active teacher continuing development programme. 7. along with the AM and Senior Teachers, leading teaching and learning innovation and development at Atlas. 8. playing a significant role in Quality Assurance by focussing on QA observations and monitoring post-observation feedback, and by supporting the annual whole school internal audit. 9. generally promoting a professional, purposeful and positive atmosphere in the school.

2. Student Satisfaction

1. when teaching General English Fluency classes in the mornings, being available to students and teachers for consultation and advice in the afternoon session from 2.00pm on a daily basis.

2. when scheduled for full-time academic administration duties (i.e., when not teaching General English Fluency classes in the mornings), being available to students and teachers for consultation and advice in the mornings from 8.30am and then in afternoon session from 1.10pm onwards on a daily basis.

3. following up on student feedback in tutorials with recommendations to the Academic Manager (AM) to improve student satisfaction.

3. Course Management

1. managing the academic administrative procedures when required to by the Academic Manager (AM). This can include preparing the weekly class schedule and teacher timetable, ensuring suitably qualified, experienced and motivated teaching staff are recruited, administering Day One placement tests for new students, determining levels, placing students in appropriate levels and classes while maintaining classroom efficiency, inputting the information onto the school’s student management system, inducting new students and coordinating school staff as required on those intake days.

2. acting as one of the Level Coordinators, cataloging supplementary materials and advising on weekly objectives and ideas for activities and materials on our core General English Fluency programme when required.

3. supporting the Senior Teacher - Exams Coordinator ensuring the operation of efficient exam registration and notification procedures for non-EEA students on Academic Year courses. Suitable records documenting this must be maintained.

4. supporting student development through self-directed study in the afternoon Study Club and supporting the Senior Teacher - Study Club Coordinator maintaining the independent learning centre for students by ensuring the development and maintenance of learning materials for students to borrow.

5. organising efficient progress testing sessions to help assess students’ levels, placing them in appropriate classes while maintaining classroom efficiency. This includes, in conjunction with the AM, inputting the information into the school’s student management system and publishing class lists for a new term by 11.00am on the last day of a term.

6. managing Atlas’ change of level procedure keeping accurate records of all requests to change level and how they are resolved. This includes liaising with teachers on students’ progress and performance in class.

7. ensuring class clipboards have accurate class lists, schedules of work and lesson logs & plans ready for the start of each week.

8. ensuring that class details (levels, teachers’ names and classrooms) on the class lists match the class details on the school’s weekly timetable.

9. reviewing class clipboards thoroughly and accurately, advising the AM if any are not kept up-to-date in an appropriate manner.

10. ensuring that syllabuses and course guidance notes are provided to teachers as needed.

11. developing and implementing new courses as part of the academic team. 12. assisting the AM in developing relevant and valid course assessments.

4. Resources

1. advising the Academic Manager (AM) on the stock of core course book resources and when stock needs to be ordered.

2. ensuring that course books and other prescribed course materials for students are available in the office in adequate numbers for the start of new terms and intake days.

3. ensuring the facilities and resources in the Teachers’ Room are maintained in an organised, easy-to-access way.

4. monitoring classroom facilities and equipment ensuring that equipment and other teaching resources are available in the right locations and in good working order. Report all faults and breakages to the AM in a timely manner.

5. Other

1. undertaking cover teaching when necessary. 2. supporting the Teacher Training department contributing to the delivery of

initial teacher training awards (e.g., the CELT) and Atlas’ overseas teacher training courses.

3. being available to work as a senior member of the team at one of Atlas’ seasonal junior centres.

4. writing and / or proofing for publication one Atlas blog post per week. 5. participating in weekly academic management meetings with the Academic

Manager (AM). 6. being familiar and confident with good health and safety practices, and act

on them. 7. behaving in a courteous and professional manner with colleagues and

clients at all times. 8. demonstrating a commitment to continuing professional development 9. attend MEI, QQI and other relevant education meetings, workshops and

conferences. 10. being familiar with the inspection criteria of QQI and, in liaison with the AM,

helping to ensure that those criteria are, at the very least, met. 11. carrying out other duties as that the AM may require.

SUMMARY - Principal Roles and Responsibilities of the ADOS
