Passive Messaging Board Campaign to Promote Alcohol and Drug Awareness to Rutgers University Freshmen Joanne Strand Tanisha Riley, H.O.P.E. To increase knowledge regarding safer behavior and risk reduction related to alcohol and drugs among freshmen students To promote awareness through passive messaging boards highlighting the dangers and risks associated with alcohol and drug abuse • Each year, about 1,825 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die from alcohol-related unintentional injuries 696,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are assaulted by another student who has been drinking • 97,000 students between the ages of 18 - 24 report experiencing alcohol-related sexual assault or date rape • 47,000 people died in the USA in 2014 due to an overdose in prescription drugs, prescription opioid pain relievers, cocaine, and heroin Future plans include assessing if the boards increased knowledge or awareness amongst freshmen with pre-tests and post-tests or self- reports of reduced harmful behaviors I would like to thank Tanisha Riley, my preceptor and Kamila Pavezzi for their guidance throughout this internship • 63% of freshmen residence halls participated in the passive messaging board campaign • All of the resident assistants who implemented a board were overall satisfied with their board, as conducted by a survey • 60% of students in residence halls with a board stated that after reading the board, they had increased knowledge of H.O.P.E. and Rutgers Health Services, as conducted by a survey Purpose Significance Methodology Outcomes Evaluation Acknowledgements Conducted outreach through email and Facebook posts to 294 resident assistants Researched effective passive messaging techniques Distributed educational reading materials to students
