An artist in Art nouveau jewellery-

After designing for the greatest names in fi ne jewellery from Boucheron to Cartier, René Lalique (1860-1945) began creating jewellery in his own name in 1888. His designs quickly earned him the title of uncontested master of Art nouveau jewellery. With insatiable curiosity, he took his inspiration from nature to recreate it with magic. His limitless imagination was equalled only by his boldness and talent in representing the female form and the motifs of fl ora and fauna which he explored meticulously.

Lalique gave special attention to crafting materials, modelling their colour and appearance in a search for the most vibrant resemblances to nature. This search resulted in sublime designs that stood apart from the fi ne jewellery codes of the times creating “something that has never been seen before”. At a time when originality and creativity were neglected in favour of sumptuousness and a profusion of gemstones, Lalique chose to make the materials serve his designs. Whether precious or not, he chose them for their power, light and colour. He combined gold and precious stones with ornamental stones, mother-of-pearl, ivory, horn or even enamel and glass. He would explore and craft the latter with particular aff ection for their infi nite colour possibilities which off er vibrant palettes as well as unparalleled transparency and light refl ections.

He revolutionised the fi ne jewellery of his times, becoming the darling of the socialites, earning the admiration of his most renowned peers, receiving orders from the grandest courts and collected by the greatest fortunes. The 1900 World’s Fair consecrated his Art and revealed his talent to the entire world. René Lalique was truly the “inventor of modern jewellery”.

The House’s fine jewellery collection reflects the Master Jeweller’s inspirations, pursuing the poetic exploration of nature and myths that René Lalique so cherished. In a quest for true virtuosity, Lalique perpetuates its founder’s heritage through its crafted materials and mastery of their techniques, while the most precious know-how serves the expression of its themes. Nature comes to life in a revelation of light; a fusion of gold, gems, mother-of-pearl, enamel and lacquer

An artist in Art déco glasswork-

In an outstanding success, the whole world wanted to design “LALIQUE” and many of his peers, including the most prestigious, would interpret, imitate and copy René Lalique. Starting in 1905, Lalique’s interest would wane with the eff ervescence around his fi ne jewellery work which he had nourished and explored to a degree of perfection never equalled before. He would progressively focus on crafting glass and enamel which he particularly admired.

With François Coty, he waged commercial and industrial revolution in perfume, magically reconciling Art and industry. After jewellery, this new work with glass would become the most perfect expression of his creative genius which he would passionately and relentlessly apply to objects large and small: perfume bottles, boxes, clocks, automobile mascots, bowls, carafes, fountains, architecture, etc. The name Lalique echoed from the Orient Express to the Normandie cruise ship, to the fi nest palaces. René Lalique had become a Master Glass Artist.

Without forgetting the Art nouveau ornaments behind the undisputed suc-cess of his jewellery, René Lalique became the Great Glassmaker of Art déco. In his work, the emblematic ornamental lines of fl ora and fauna in Art nouveau are replaced by the sleek geometric lines of Art déco. His catalogue would be enriched with popular designs that quickly became iconic. He crafted these materials and light with the same intensity as in his jewellery and became famous for his contrasting transparent and satin-fi nished glass. In 1931, he designed the glass Cabochon ring: its generous roundness, timeless elegance and pure lines epitomized the new Lalique style. The name Lalique became synonymous with the bold combination of a material with unique craftsmanship: glass and, starting in 1945, crystal.

Designed as a tribute to René Lalique’s glass work, the fine jewellery collections presented here refl ect the clean, stylised, geometric curves of Art déco. Inspired by the Master Jeweller’s precious heritage, these pieces come to life through gradient colour themes, colour contrasts or illuminated with diamonds. In continuation of the Art nouveau spirit, they reveal the vastness of the enchanting jewels of the House of Lalique.
